Does anyone know anything about Chow's? My dad wants to give my daughter a Chow puppy, but I don't know anything about the dog. Is it friendly breed or one of those mean breeds. My dad say it's a protective dog. That's good, but I just don't know anything about that breed dog.

I've never owned a chow, but I've heard that they can be snappy, and not very kid friendly.

BUT, I don't know this from experience.

My sister had one for years - he was the most loyal and protective dog.....

I had a chow mix from the time I was like 7 until just a few months ago when we had to put him down... he was a good little dog. Protective of me, but not aggressive... in fact he was sort of a wuss... lol. He was smart and had such a personality though.

I still like GSD's the best, but he was a great dog. Just be careful, because they do get kind of a bad rap, but it depends on the dog and how it was raised.

That entire breeding group is very family orientated - protective - and pretty fantastic. Very loyal.

I love Chow Chow's.

Personally, I had a Japanese Akita (similar family of dog) and she was fantastic with me as a kid, and very very protective. Never had a Chow specifically, but I've known 'em.

As everybody said: they are very protective....if you get it just tell your daughter not to try to take the food away from it cuz then they can get a lil mean but other than that they are great dogs......

First, they need a lot of TRAINING all the time.

The ones I know are fearful and can be agressive.

We had one when I was little, he was a big baby and very protective of me and my brother. He did get stolen and came back and after that he was very protective of us. My mom would have to put us in the house so Bear would let people out of their cars. We have lab/golden retriever mixes and theyre good.

My chow was the most loyal and loving dog ever. We never had a bit of problem from him all the 12 years of his life.

My husband had one when he was a teenager and worked so hard with that dog, then someone stole him. I still think he wants another!

My dog is 1/2 chow and is the sweetest dog I've had. Very protective, has been very good with the kids. He has never snapped at anyone though. I do know we've had issues with getting renter's insurance in the past though because of him being 1/2 chow and I was asked what kind of dog I had when searching for homeowner's insurance. So there must be some issue about them being a potential liability according to insurance companies.

DH's family has a dog that's 1/2 chow. She is a great dog, just as everyone else said, very protective. With her it is to the point that she is very wary of strangers and most times she has to stay outside when people come to visit because she will growl at them.
