View Full Version : HELP-DOG 911
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 01:42 AM my dog just started vomiting this mucusy, foamy, and bloody vomit. He was finishing up his nylabone and i think he choked on it because it was laying beside a puddle... Could the bone have cut part of his throat-he vomited three times but otherwise looks fine. he acts kinda sad. his poop looks fine:worried
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 01:49 AM please!! it's an emergency!! I need to know what to do now!!! please someone help me!:tears
VinnysGirl 10-03-2007, 01:51 AM Take him to an ER vet. I know they are expensive, but if he cut his esophagus he could be bleeding. He vomited blood and that's never good. His poop will probably look fine for a day or two until things get through. You don't want to risk him tearing some of his intestines!! That's what I would do with my girls!!! :goodluck I hope he starts feeling better!!!
Will he take water??? Are his gums pale???
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 01:52 AM no he wont take water but i was reading to limit his intake....his gums look fine-i learned to check that cause he went into shock when he was a puppy and almost died
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 01:54 AM he hasnt vomited in about 20-30 minutes and he's laying on the carpet. will he be okay till morning in ya'lls opinion?
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 02:11 AM ok...ummmm
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 02:12 AM well i called the e-vet and she said that he might have cut something but to keep watch on him and if he starts more bleeding or vomiting to bring him in so i guess it's on the couch for me so i dont disturb DH
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 02:13 AM and thank you vinnysgirl for your advice
VinnysGirl 10-03-2007, 02:27 AM he hasnt vomited in about 20-30 minutes and he's laying on the carpet. will he be okay till morning in ya'lls opinion?
As long as he isn't labored in his breathing and his gums are a good color and he's not vomiting anymore then I would think he would probably be ok at least until morning. Like the e-vet said though if he continues take him in..you can never be too careful. Make an appt first thing in the morning with his vet and let them know what happened so they can check him out in case something needs medication or attention. ALSO... regarding the nylabone... I would give him kongs and put the kong stuffin and some of his food in there and let him chew those from now on... rawhides, nylabones, and greenies can all pose threats when it comes to spurs and things like that.. if he's showing that he goes after them too quick I would switch him around to the kongs for power chewers, just to keep him safe!!!!
well i called the e-vet and she said that he might have cut something but to keep watch on him and if he starts more bleeding or vomiting to bring him in so i guess it's on the couch for me so i dont disturb DH
I'm glad you called!!! They ultimately will be able to help you the most!!!
and thank you vinnysgirl for your advice
You are welcome!!!! Our dogs are our kids so if something goes wrong then I'm on the phone with the vet or on my way to the vet!! :hugs
I am so sorry to hear that this happend!! I agree with what was said before, just keep an eye and take your baby in in the morning, unless your dog gets sick again tonight. I have my fingers crossed for you guys
Astra 10-03-2007, 02:51 AM im so sorry that happend to your doggy!:sadeyes i hope hes ok and that he feels better soon id say just watch him carefully and if he gets any worse take him to an emergency ER :hugs :goodvibes
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 03:19 AM he's thown up several more times so i called the vet but they only take money up front!! and i have none!!! even though we just got paid we had groceries and rent:confused i dont know what to do and i'm sleep deprived. I feel like i'm just sitting here watching him die....the last vomit wasnt as bloody so i'm hoping that's a good sign
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 03:25 AM he seems to tremble a little when he breathes but i dont hear any laboring. His tummy is rumbling something aweful but i cant give him food and he wouldnt eat even if i did
ArmyGirl 10-03-2007, 03:34 AM does your vet have an after hours number?
Jennygirl 10-03-2007, 06:04 AM unfortunately, he needs to go in if he is still vomitting...And also keep this in mind, if you go to a normal vet about this today you will end up paying one way or another.
Pets are pricey, but they are worth it My young dog went into kidney failure and eventhough I work for a vet i paid out my butt for his treatment.
Traci 10-03-2007, 07:11 AM Last year I found out my dog was allergic to bees. He got stung(ididn't know) and by dinner he had hives. Then he started swelling. By 10 he was having trouble breathing. The ER vet wanted money upfront and I didn't have any. they have this payment option called care credit. it's like a credit card that you use for Dr's. Try www.carecredit.com. We got a $500 limit and I took him right in. It took about 3 min of my time. My last resort was going to bounce a check. My baby needed a Dr.
Kristen 10-03-2007, 08:02 AM How's he doing this morning?
I'm sorry you and he went through this in the middle of the night, when everything is scarier.
I hope he's doing better! :hugs
christymichelle 10-03-2007, 10:34 AM I hope he's doing better:( poor baby
Kiser'sBabe 10-03-2007, 10:43 AM How's he doing this morning? I hope he's doing better.
VinnysGirl 10-03-2007, 01:34 PM I hope he is doing better this morning. Try a different ER vet and see if they can do a payment plan with you. I just used a credit card when Sophie was stung by a bee and went into shock. She lost all control of her bodily functions and was rejecting everything... the treatment was as simple as benadryl and steroids. That simple, but I was scared to death and so was she!
You might want to look into getting some sort of insurance or credit card for pet emergencies!!! :goodluck
Let us know how he is doing!!!!!

Thats what I use my care credit card for. Dog emergencys only. It helps me not to panic so much when something happens because I don't have to worry about $.

:thumbsup That's exactly why I wasn't freaking when I took her in, aside from her strange behavior, because I knew we could just pay it off over the next few paychecks and it wasn't a big OMG where are we going to get the money right now kind of situation!!! :thumbsup It was stressful enough trying to get her well!!!
AshleyReida 10-03-2007, 03:14 PM Update...I fell asleep in the living room wiht Brutus so i wouldnt distrub DH. He got up once more to throw up then was fine and slept. This morning his stool had blood in it so i took him in to his vet. they refused me but i remember i had a wellness plan and that covered (with a lot of string pulling) his visit, blood work, and stool sample. Blood work came back fine but the stool sample had bacteria in it that was 10 times the normal amount. They gave me ammoxacilin with some pill crushed up in it to give him over the next 10 days. They said he should be better within 12-48 hours. They also gave him fluids since the vomiting made him dehydrated. He's already doing better-eating and all and walking around and not moping anymore(he barely got up this morning):whew Thanks for the concern!

Glad to hear he's doing better.I know how scary it is b/c my dog had a similar experience about a week and a half ago. Do you go to Banfield?? If so they should have been able to deny you. Mine tried that and I just went to another banfield....( they're they ones who said the first one should have turned me away b/c gi bleeding can be an emergency...)

Interesting.. mine did the same thing, my dog was vomiting blood, and I ask my best friend to take my dog to the vet for me ( I had a test I couldn't miss) After she said ok i called the vet and gave them a heads up ( they said ok bring the dog in) but when my friend and lucy got there they were like yeah, sorry we can't see her.. I was sooo upset. Glad everything worked out for you.

Kristen 10-03-2007, 03:59 PM I'm so glad he's doing better, and that you were able to get him treatment! It's kind of scary that they do that, because if someone didn't push, then the dog would suffer unfairly. I'm glad you pushed!
