HOUSTON -- A day-care driver is accused of leaving a toddler in a locked shuttle bus in downtown Houston reportedly while he attended jury duty.Officials said Eddie Collins was charged with endangering a child after he left 3-year-old Nicholas McKinnon alone in the shuttle bus while parked in a garage at 801 San Jacinto at 8 a.m. Tuesday.Nicholas' mother was at work when she got the call.
"I knew it had to be an emergency, so I ran to the phone. When she told me, my heart just dropped. 'You mean he didn't get to school? What was he doing downtown?' It really scared me," Rosetta Branch said.

Collins worked for Phoenix Outreach Youth Center in southeast Houston. He was supposed to drop off Nicholas at his preschool, which is two blocks from the day care.Collins told police that he was going to jury duty and did not realize Nicholas was still in the bus.The child screamed out a window for help."As he was yelling out a window, he was crying, sweating, yelling, 'Get me out of the bus.' I immediately went to one side where the door wouldn't open. Then, I came to this side of the door and it was locked, so I had to physically force the door open. The little boy just ran out, thanking me, jumping in my arms. I took him and brought him into the patrol car so he could cool off," said Aarington Strickland, a METRO police officer.Nicholas was checked out at a local hospital and will be OK.Bond for Collins was set at $2,000.Day-care center officials said they have fired Collins. The state agency that oversees day-care centers is investigating the matter after the day-care did not report the incident.KPRC Local 2 checked with the Harris County Clerk's Office and found that Collins was not listed for jury duty on Tuesday.
