when i was in the height of my depression and was planning my death having come across that it just might have sparked me. not saying it would have but it could have. it's irresponsible to have that out there just like it's irresponsible to have the pro-suicide, pro-eating disorder, etc etc sites out there

No- emo's arn't suicidal LOL.

Brittany Rashel
10-05-2007, 10:28 AM
No, many psychologists consider it a disease. Self-mutilation is a very serious disorder. It occurs when people are in a serious state of depression and IMO it's really not something to joke about.

SIMMYBABEZ
10-05-2007, 10:35 AM
I 100% agree Brittany. My sister is a self harmer and she is doing it to SURVIVE. If she wanted to kill herself she would- she's harming herself to save herself. MANY MANY people don't understand this.. many people don't even understand.

To me- this sort of photo is absolutely insensitive and disturbing. As I said- this would have been an instruction manual to me last year, not a joke. Suicide, cutting, depression- none of it is a joke, none of it should be made fun of.

I think it's tacky.. but that's what you get on the internet.. all kinds of tacky, rude, etc... things.

Even being someone who cut myself for years (i wore long sleeves all year round to hide it, even when it was 95 degrees outside I wore long sleeve shirts) it doesn't bother or offend me. I don't see any kid/teen seeing it as an "instruction"... it's a stupid picture intended to be used to try to offend people.

It's a hard thing to explain too. I had so much hurt and pain inside growing up. I had a BAD childhood, things happened to me, my mother treated me terrible.... I felt like everything was my fault and I felt trapped. I wasn't allowed to have friends, I wasn't allowed to go anywhere at all. I was literally a prisoner and a maid in my home. If I even as much as opened my mouth when i was upset It would get punched shut so it was a way to get out all of the hurt and pain without getting myself in any more toruble. It was almost like a release. I was have so much hurt and anger built up I felt like I would explode and doing it helped make me feel better for a little while. It sounds so stupid and awful when you hear it and even me looking back at it I can't believe how stupid it is.. but when you're going through it, it's so much different.

Maybe I'm just oversensitive. Maybe that's it.. because when I see this- it automatically puts me back in a place where I was last year. And if ANYONE has been through something so deep, something that is a picture of a living hell- they will know exactly what I mean.

I have never harmed myself physically- I have always tried to avoid that.. but I sure as hell DID contemplate suicide and this is just so disturbing on so so so many levels.

I just can't see the humour in it at all. SUICIDE is not funny.

It's the worst feeling you can feel. Life dosn't exist as you knew it to exist before, you are left with nothing but your own cloud of self destructive thoughts and misery- there is no light in the end of the tunnel, there is no hope, nothing makes more sense than dying.

Maybe this picture is supposed to be a joke- but to alot of people, it's either a reminder or a guide. In the big picture- wtf is so funny about it?

I'm so glad I didn't.. but I could have.. and that's just so fucking scary.

I've attempted suicide and so has my husband and we both can take a joke.

Though I do have a line - It's not like I'm actually showing things like that to my kids...Because they wouldn't get the 'joke' in it.
I'm an adult and I can handle humor in all forms, and laugh if I want. It's just not a big deal to me. But, still, when i was younger I wouldn't have thought the same.

Some things that others find hilarious and entertaining aren't amusing to me at all.

But, with dark humor it's who you actually expose it to that makes it comical or not.
I would absolutely be infuriated if I saw something like that posted on the bullitin board at my kid's school - or anywhere that they would find it.

Anyone who knows me knows I don't stop joking around.. I'm a bullshit artist. I'll find a joke out of anything. Just can't see it here.

You're not oversensitive Simmy, I completely agree with you. I find it offensive. I was in severe depression and used to do things like that. It's not something funny, it's terrifying. You feel like you've lost all control. From my personal experience I was in so much severe pain (emotionally) all the time and it was the only kind of pain I could control. For me- the depression came from nowhere. It just hit me like a ton of bricks. I was in it, I knew I was but I couldn't determine why, I just knew I couldn't trust myself anymore and it was scary.. when I came out of it- I looked back and realised I was so close to ending my life and I still couldn't figure out why.

I am honestly surprised at the overall reaction to this*. What happened to "I shouldn't have to inconvenience myself and stop sending nuts to school with my kid" and "it's the parents responsibility to protect their child not mine" responses to the peanut butter debate? Wouldn't that same logic apply here? Obviously someone found it funny and doesn't want to be inconvenienced by anyone else's issues, so if you wouldn't want your kids to see it then don't let them online cuz this shit is EVERYWHERE. No one else is responsible for protecting your child right? Even if it could mean life or death to them?

*I am just talking about the overall differences in reactions to the two separate debates, not anyone individually. I really thought I was going to see a different reaction to this topic when I started reading the thread.

If my child saw it- I'd talk to them about how suicide isn't the only option, and certainly not the answer.

I plan to educate them about this complete issue when they come to age. And I won't know that age until I see they are mature enough to understand.

Also- if the internet is still on a computer when they are old enough to know computers- I'll be transforming that thing into a mine field of parental locks.

I have thought about death when I was low, but at that time it was I COULD just drive my car off this or into that. How ever I have my children to worry about (back then I only had one child) my therapist says THINKING about death is normal it is when you plan it that you need to ask for help. I am bipolar depression and sad thoughts are sometimes a part of my life. I have to see the humor in it or I don't think I would be able to get through the bad times.

Any way I KNOW the right way to slit my wrists if I was wanting to do it that way. I don't think most people NEED an instruction manual. If they did they can just hop on ANY of the pro suicide sites which ARE actually instructional manuals.

This picture is just somebody being funny, someone that has a dark sense of humor. It neither amuses me or disgusts me everyone is different, what they think is funny will be different. As for banning it I don't believe images or books, or movies should be banned.

People find humor in the method of delivery - not what it's actually saying.
*shrug* I read the OP and didn't actually think of suicide ... more so the means of making fun of those inspirational/instructional posters that everyone's seen.

That is what I thought of too...If they hadn't written the hey kids part then I wouldn't have thought it funny.

My intial reaction is.... I wonder who's trying to make a point, and I wonder what that point is.

I'm pretty open-minded, and usually I don't have a problem with using sarcasm... but I'll agree it's a bit tacky.

Ok, I just read the entire thread... and after scratching my head trying to figure out where stuff like this comes from... it TOTALLY makes sense, whoever was saying that it was just some asshole comment that a guy would post on a men's forum. I know all kinds of guys my age (girls too for that matter) who would find that kind of sarcasm humorous.

I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously. It's the same as telling someone to go play on the freeway.... or something equally dumb.

I highly doubt that the person's intention was to seriously throw suicide in anyone's face... yeah, it's horribly insensitive to those affected by suicide that happen to stumble across it....but I don't think that was the intended audience at all. It's very easy to joke about things, until we're faced with them.

I personally would never condone crap like this... but I'm also a firm believer in the First Amendment. I think it's a parental responsibility to protect your children, and teach them to know better than to take crap like that seriously.

To those of you who have been affected by suicide, or attempted suicide, I'm deeply sorry and I hope you can find peace and heal. :hugs
