View Full Version : what size... ash 10-05-2007, 02:36 PM crate do I need for a 5 year old 10 pound shih tzu? ash 10-05-2007, 11:08 PM :bump JudyB 10-05-2007, 11:10 PM Is it for crate training??? If so you want it big enough for them to be comfortable but small enough so that they don't have a corner/area to pee/mess in. If you go to the Petco or Petsmart web site and view the cages they have weight limits on them and that may be helpful ash 10-05-2007, 11:11 PM yeah, I saw online that it was 24inches for her size, that just seems so small :(.... I thought someone on here might have real life experience It is for crate training VinnysGirl 10-05-2007, 11:16 PM They say they need to have enough room to turn around, stand up, and lay down... not a whole lot of play area. Like Judy said.. don't want a whole lot of extra space for the pup to make a mess in. That was our mistake with Sophie.. her kennel was FAR too large for her as a puppy, but now it fits her just right. :goodluck Crate training is a challenge!!! JudyB 10-05-2007, 11:17 PM Can she sit up in it?? Stand up in it?? We just got a crate for our dog today and it may "look" small but he can sit and stand in it....but he has no room to pee/mess at all. Dogs do not like to sleep/lay where they mess thats why you need small but comfortable. I am not training her myself, she is going to a dog boot camp :lol missingmysgt 10-05-2007, 11:21 PM i know it seems small. but thats about right. my dog is a 7 lb toy poodle. i crate trained her. you just want it to be able to move around a bit. the whole point to crate training is that dogs dont like to pee where they sleep... sooooo if there is enough room for them to pee in a corner and then lay down away from it, it defeats the purpose. |
