I think the spca/humane society/no-kill shelters are excellent places to adopt cats. If you were interested in a specific dog breed, I would try the AKC parent club's breed rescue. I am active in the French Bulldog rescue and have been in the DPCA rescue in the early "90s.

When I was younger my mom got one of our dogs from a county shelter. He was really good. We never had a problem with him. Two months ago we went to a shelter here and got a cat. It is a no kill shelter and all animals they get they put one of those chips in so if they get loose they can be identified as your pet. She was labeled as a cat that was good with kids 12 yrs. and up. She kept following us around and literally jumped in my purse. At that point I said she she was ours. We could not have asked for a better cat. She is very good with Breanna. I thought she may be a little stand offish with Breanna but she isn't. She plays with her and when Breanna lays on her bed or the couch the cat lays there with her. She has even jumped up on the couch and licked Johnny a few times. I would definetly say give the shelters a look.

We got our cat from the vabeach spca and I'm glad we did, Katrina is the sweetest cat we could ask for, she even gets along with our bird. the only negative was they said that she was up to date on all of her shots, when she wasn't, she was only half way thru, so we had to restart them from scratch. So if you do it make sure you double check things like that

we got our cat from the spca. He is the best pet of all time. www.petharbor.com is also a good site to find animals. Usually it has animals that were dropped off at pounds (kill shelters). Also look in your local paper because sometimes it will give websites to shelters that you don't know exist.

We adopted our dog from the "pound"...Fresno City Animal Control.
I don't think there is anything better than rescuing a dog from an animal shelter! You are giving them a second chance at life.
