View Full Version : Moving.. Have a question
NewBeginnings 03-22-2006, 11:15 AM Josh and I are wanting to move out of navy housing. We are in VA Beach.. My question is: Do any of you live in Newport News? What are the rent prices like? Our neighbors are looking for apartments there and she said that they are cheaper there then they are in VA Beach.. I just wanted some more opinons, cause if this is true, then we're going to look there.. The only thing is I don't know if Josh would drive that far to go to and from work. Guess I'll have to talk to him and see what he says..
Thanks
IgglesmumX2 03-22-2006, 11:19 AM I live in Newport News. We rent a 3 bedroom house for $881/month. It is cheaper than alot of places here but everything on this side of the water is much cheaper than the Southside. The only bad thing is the drive to and from Norfolk every day. My dh has to be at work at 7 and we have to leave the house by 6 to get him there in time...plus the drive home is even longer with all the construction going on.
NewBeginnings 03-22-2006, 11:21 AM Thanks exnavychick!! Would you suggest anywhere in particular to look in that area?
mamaoftwins+1 03-22-2006, 11:25 AM i dont live there but i remember you writing that you hate the tunnels here and if im remembering right you were talking about the one by the portsmith naval hosp. would josh wanna drive through the tunnel everyday? just something to think about. we are in norfolk buying a house 3 bedrooms with lots of room and extras for 1000 a month.
IgglesmumX2 03-22-2006, 11:28 AM Stay away from downtown Newport News...if there is a number in the street you might not want it! I don't know of any place in particular but if you want me to check anywhere out for you let me know.

You have to remember that you got very lucky with your house Amanda. There aren't many places that reasonable in this area...plus I can't speak for her but I wouldn't want to deal with a house when DH is deployed. When you rent if something breaks its the landlords responsiblity to fix it.
NewBeginnings 03-22-2006, 11:32 AM I don't want a house right now because we don't know if he's getting sent to A school or not.. we want one EVENTUALLY. Not to mention he's only an E3 you guys husband make MORE then he does, we couldn't afford a house, unless its one we found through navy housing and I don't want anything to do with navy housing
IgglesmumX2 03-22-2006, 11:34 AM We found our house through the RPP at housing. They gave us a list of houses and apartments that fit our criteria. Plus, its nice to know if our landlord ever gets nasty and decides not to fix something we just call them and they get on him.

our realitor had lots of houses for us in this price range over 20 of them and some were 4 bedrooms and one was 5 bedrooms. you just gotta look or get a good realitor:) like LInda Farlow bell
NewBeginnings 03-22-2006, 11:37 AM I'd rather stick with an apartment that way if something comes up (like a deployment), there are some apartments (we have a friend in one right now) that they put your rent on hold if you show them deployment papers.
mamaoftwins+1 03-22-2006, 11:47 AM yeah sounds like a plan:) plus yall dont know when your moving right?
NewBeginnings 03-22-2006, 11:53 AM We want out of navy housing, we just haven't started looking, so I'm going between this website and apartmentguide.com, I'm looking in Newport News.. not EVERYTHING is cheaper but a good majority of them are.. But it'll be up to Josh if we move there, he'll be the one driving that far.. Not to mention we may not do it cause I like going to the commisary from time to time and we like going to the beach on base and I don't really want to drive that far to go to the beach.
mamaoftwins+1 03-22-2006, 11:54 AM theres a commisary over there it is just smaller and i think a beach too

There are 2 different commissaries over here...both of which are the same size as at NOB...ones AirForce and the other is Army. There is a beach over here but it is actually part of the inlet so there aren't very many waves.
NewBeginnings 03-22-2006, 12:26 PM Josh said he wouldn't mind, I'm IMing with him right now on Yahoo.. So I guess I better start looking... Exnavychick, any help you could give me would be GREATLY appreciated..
IgglesmumX2 03-22-2006, 12:28 PM Well, I don't know of any apartments but I can look at any you ask about.
hey kristina. i used to live in newport news and not to far from where exnavychick lives either. we rented a 3 bedroom apt at waverton place impressions for about 881 a month too and thats with a military discount. but im sure you are just looking for a 2 bedroom so its got to be cheaper than that. and if josh's BAH would cover the whole rent all you all have to pay extra is just for your utilities which would be phone and electric cause the water is included in the rent plus they have washer and dryers in the apts. they are also on apartment guide.com too.
oh i did loads of reseach on apts and townhomes. there is another one just off of oyster point called Criston townhomes and they have very spacious floor plans even for their smaller ones. im not sure though how long their waiting list is either. i dont know how much you all are looking to spend though in rent
NewBeginnings 03-22-2006, 12:34 PM Well the other tricky part is we need washer and dryer connections, we have A washer and dryer
well i know criston townhomes have some with just hook ups and if you called around to waverton place impressions they may have some with just hook ups too. but there are other places you can go too. but we liked living in the area we did. which was right near patrick henry mall. but the one thing i dont miss there is the traffic LOL but i do miss everything else. hell i just miss living in VA period. i have lived there for 43 years and while its nice living here in TX i am missing so much in VA.
