Eh...My DB would make more money*,more than me (and I make twice as he does) if we up and got hitched due to where I live.

We even pondered it cause hes having to borrow money from me or his parents...

But thankfully,he opted it would be too much stress and too much of a "military rushed marriage" cop out.

Maybe other branches pay better,the Navy pays shit while you're single.

military pay is just that military wide.. if he is on deployment in Iraq there are more pays than being on the boat. the only time you have "more money" when married is when you have BAH but usually that is already gone due to having to pay rent or being in housing.

After the extension happened for us in January, his LES has an extra grand a month tax-free. :eek They called it extension pay or something like that..

You don't have to pay taxes on the tax-free money. ;) They have a code for it on your w-2 when you file. :D It's AWESOME.

if it was tax free then no, it goes under the non taxable income area. when dh was in Turkey a few years ago we were raking it in, with a 600 a month per diem and tax free, which well cut his taxable income down, so our refund was pretty low.

He'll only make that while he's over there, not here. If you're thinking he'll be making alot over here, you're in for a rude awakening. Not many people can afford a decent house (along with the other bills that come with a house) on what the military gives you in BAH. IMO, if you're only going to be at a duty station for 3-6 years (average turn over), its a little stupid to buy a house because you'll be upside down in negative equity.

I know that its only over there. He is going to save a lot of the money and get promoted... plus I have a job too. He says he might go drill when he comes home. I told him we could live on post... we have tons of thing to work out before we even think about doing anything. But then again we do have 15 months to think about it....;)

hehe yea. Extra pay is only really extra when you don't have a family. I was juss telling someone that the other day. Get a wife & have some kids and watch how fast your money disappears.

I hear ya...my DB is in AIT, and they told him that if he got engaged, and right after we got married, his pay would skyrocket...luckily, we still aren't rushing things...but it is something to look forward too:lol

My dh doesn't make but like 250 more there. Of course tax free as well. But we're Texas residents so it's really not that much back. Everyone keeps telling me but what are you doing with all that extra money. It's like um what extra money?!?

Look at the BAH he makes now, then look at BAH he will make with dependents, so you'll know the difference. It's not always alot.
There's probably some other rates on there you can look up so you can figure out how much it will be.
