his deployment is suppose to be 6 months at the latest. everyone ive talked to say no they never actually keep you for 6 months its usually 4. so i asked him again, and he said it says on his paper 6 months. can this change?? it doesnt make any sense! i know 4 other people with his job and who have been at his base and they have 4 months! the trade off is even at 4 months! whys he have to stay?!?!?! GAHHHHHH. the past few days were so good and with that little hope in the back of my mind that he could be home by february and now its gone and i feel like crying but im in the middle of school and i couldnt even get to talk to him because all these stupid ass freshman decided to hang out in front of the payphones and being obnixious and i wanted to bitch them out so bad!

oh i think its all iffy really.

The Navy says the deployments are 6-9 months. No one really gets 6 months in the Navy so says the DB,its usually somewhere between 6-9 months.

That could all change,it can always change...unfortunately.

I posted this before, my man is in the AF and he is on a 10 month deployment and there is room for possible extension. The average for AF is 6 months. This war is completely different and they are doing things out of the ordinary so I would not say this is unusual for this day and time. Mine is supposed to be home next month I dont know when or if he is extended so I am looking at the end of January so I dont get my hopes up. That will be one year deployement.

Mine is gone for a 365 rigth now and it is actually 16 mths total with the training he had to do to get geared up. My Dh is SF and has never done less than 6 mths on deployments. Sorry it is stressing you out so bad.

DF is on a 15 months deployment and he told me that there are rumors of an extension already so it happens no matter what length deployment you are on. Military...go figure. I hope you find an effective coping mechanism sooner than later.

He is a mp it's ALWAYS 6 months. Other AF deployments with the exception of a few are all 4 months. If there are 4 others who have only gone 4 months then it WAS NOT a standard deployment. Matt has never been shorter then 6-8 months and we know NOONE who has been shorter then 6-8

That isn't fair :( he's said that it can vary depending on when the next flight comes in so he can get out. He said it can be sooner or later. knowing the military it will be later. friggin ridiculous. i need to shake my fist at someone

:agree I would take 6 months rather than my 15 months. :(

Sorry hun!! You never truly know the timeline of deployments with the military. Just hang in there and stay as busy as you can. It sucks right now, but you're going to make it and you're going to be ok... I PROMISE!!! PM me if you need anything. My DH is in the AF too!! What's your SO's job in the AF? And where are they sending him to for deployment?

It will be 6 months. It can be 8 months but more the likely it will be 6 months. The next flight should get there at month 5 then our guys have to train them and make sure they know how to do the job before they leave.
Just remember in terms of the military 6 months is NOTHING. Most of the girls here have had 15 to 22 month long deployments. Whenever I sit here thinking that I have it hard I have to smack myself and remind myself that in terms of the military I have it VERY easy.
Next time you get to being bummed about it remember that in 4 1/2 some odd months he'll be home for most people they will still be waiting 3 months just for an R and R

also... if it gets extended to friggin 8 months does he get to come home at the 180 day mark? and then go back...

No. He will only get an R and R if he is gone 12 months.
In general tho the 8 months is INCLUDING the Fort Dix (that's where Matt went) training and transit. SO more then likely it will only be the 6 months. Matt's due date is 6 months. Seeing as they left near the same time and are at the same base PM me and I can tell you when matt said he'd be back.

With the Navy the "6-9 months" has been mandated DH before we knew each other was stuck on 14 month deployment back in I think it was '98 or '99 the 9 months also includes work up time though as well.

My DB is in the AF and he is in Afghanistan on a 4 month deployment. AF deployments are basically 4 months like berkley said, some can go longer depending on job. DB did mention to me that they could keep in 120days to 179 days something about if its over 180 days they have to pay him more or some nonsense if they dont give him an R&R, but I have a friend in the Navy that told me he was gone over 6 months with no R&R and they didn't do anything for him so Im not sure. I know where ur DF is, and I think I mentioned to you that DB was there and said its a little stricter there for some reason. I am lucky, I am friends with some of DBs friends that are going there in place of him so I will have a good idea when they are getting home! I too think of the people dealing with 15 month deployments and feel like a huge WIMP for being sad over 4. DBs paperwork gave a 6 month window, but he is being replaced in 4, I know that. Hope it works out!

I'd also rather take 6 months than 15.

We were extremely extremely fortunate to get this 5-6 month deployment this year.

Dh has spent 32 months there all up(counting the month or so he's been there now) and it'll be 36 by the time he gets back. And then Nov 2008 they are off for 15 (that's been confirmed apparently, but I'm ignoring it right now.

So 36+ 15 = um I dunno cos i havn't slept.

Alot!

I know it sucks when you are expecting one thing and end up being told another- but it could be so so so much worse.

R&R is mandatory for all military personnel there longer 12 months +

Right now with the 15- they are given leave for 2 weeks and abit later (or before.. whatever they are given) they get 4 days in Kuwait or Qatar.

Now when I say mandatory- that means the military HAS to give it to them.. or there is one major mother effing payout. However- the soldier always has choice if he wants to take it or not.

I'm sorry sweetie. :hugs It sucks that he will be gone that long but that's the military for you. :( My DH is deploying soon and usually it was a rotation of 4 months not we aren't sure how long he will be gone. They said it could be 4, 6 or 7 months and right now I'm really hoping for the 6 because I doubt they will go back to the 4. I hope the time goes by fast for you. :hugs :goodvibes

My db is with the AF but is contracted with the Army over in Iraq, so he's gonna be there 365. And he def gets his R&R. I wish it was only 6 months tho...I take that in a heartbeat! I know it's always possible to get extended. Seems like the military can do whatever they feel like for the most part with our boys...not fair, but we deal with it right?

I myself am getting used to the wide range of answers the USAF gives. To sum it up nicely in a quote "Everything that seems it would be, it isn't. And everything it wouldn't be, it is." :puzz

It's annoying! And I feel for you.

if you move up ranks/promotions while youre there do you think it affects the time?

i dont know how the AF works, but i've learned to never trust the navy until it happens. they talk alot of bs & alot of rumors fly around (:giggle sorry for the pun) :hugehug i know how frustrating it is, but whatever happens, you'll get through it.

and i'm sorry ladies, not trying to call you out, but i dont think it's a competition to see who's SO is gone the longest. we all know it sucks whether they're gone for 1, 4, 6, or 15 months, especially when plans change. :grouphug

I agree with that. BUT I was just telling her that when I start to feel down about matt being gone 6-8 months I just sort of mentally smack myself and think "hey you arn't facing an 18 month only a 6-8 month one" and for me it's what makes it bearable..kwim. I can't feel sorry for my situation when I know how much worse others have it.

DB explained to me that they get to usually test early before they leave and they put it on (the promotion that is) at the same time they should have. Being promoted does not affect the length of the deployment. Good luck honey! Keep your head up!

My dh has done 2 6 mos deployment with only 4 mos inbetween. I will take that over 15 mos any day. I dont know how you army wives and gf do it. I think I would die. 6 mos was difficult but 15 seems a lifetime to me. You ladies have all my respect. You are stronger than I could ever imagine being!!!!!!!!!!!!!::bouquet

Just to throw the AF aircrew deployment stuff out there... with aircrew, sometimes rank and crew positition can change how long you are deployed. If one crew position is undermanned, they will be gone longer and more often. If another crew position is 'fat' (overmanned), they have it a bit better. One thing I have noticed is that when orders are cut, they will 'fat finger' how long the deployment is. I think when dh was a Flight Engineer, his orders were almost always for 180 days, but the actual length of the deployment varied. (FE's were very undermanned when he was one!)
