View Full Version : Debt Tiffany 10-27-2007, 02:02 PM Would you say you were in debt? I am ! I have never been out of debt. :arg I am a compulsive buyer. sgmwife1 10-27-2007, 02:05 PM Nope. DAVE RAMSEY Financial Peace University has saved our finance life. Kelsey 10-27-2007, 02:06 PM We have several debts. DH has several small student loan debts to pay off We are almost done paying off our furniture credit card debt (zero interest/financing though!) We have a small amount of credit card debt due to some recent big car repairs and doctor bills And we owe my parents a large sum - but it is interest free and they won't accept payments until after we graduate. Yes, we are in debt, but working very hard to get out of it so we can buy a home (and therefore once again be in debt! :lol But mortgages (that you can afford) are GOOD debt :)) petsparkle 10-27-2007, 02:06 PM We own a house. Yeah, we're in debt. But if we wanted to sell, the equity would pay off every other bill we have (cars, etc.). RockstarMom 10-27-2007, 02:06 PM We have a school bill, but I don't count that as debt. It's almost paid off. We have 2 credit cards, but I pay them in full 2x's a month- so that's not really debt either. I am using them to improve our credit scores. We use them for gas and food. It actually helps keep us in our budget. Years ago, we were in debt. We had a lot of bumps in the road, but we fixed it. Being in debt gives me anxiety so we will NEVER do that again. RockstarMom 10-27-2007, 02:08 PM Nope. DAVE RAMSEY Financial Peace University has saved our finance life. :thumbsup I have heard wonderful things about Dave Ramsey from many people! Like, if you want a new car, put all the money you would spend on payments in savings and buy the car outright. :) andreacc 10-27-2007, 02:10 PM No im not. Ive had a few bumps in the road but im doin good. dannysgirl004 10-27-2007, 02:13 PM Nope we are not in debt. I mean yes we have a truck payment, but I don't count that as debt. We paid off all the credit cards & cut them up. So we don't live beyond our means anymore. If we want something we save for it or we don't get it. Becca 10-27-2007, 02:19 PM We're homeowners...therefore, we are in debt. We also have a car payment. But just one, so that's a bonus ;) theElephant 10-27-2007, 02:20 PM Yes, but it is a manageable debt and we will be done soon Tiffany 10-27-2007, 02:21 PM Nope. DAVE RAMSEY Financial Peace University has saved our finance life. I have the book and still havent read it :no We got behind when DH got out and now we cant catch up. Bad things keep happening and I feel like theres nothing I can do. Debra 10-27-2007, 02:24 PM Yes we are but are slowly trying to pay it all off! MSJackson 10-27-2007, 02:28 PM yeah, we have 2 car payments and some credit card debt, that we are slowly paying off. Miranda 10-27-2007, 03:01 PM Nope. Both our cars are totally paid for. CC get paid in full every month. We are just saving, saving, saving. In about a year we will be able to buy our dream house with cold, hard cash :thumbsup Mandi 10-27-2007, 03:13 PM We are, but with our tax return this year we will finally be debt free....well other then car payments Rain. 10-27-2007, 03:15 PM Yes but it's not horrible. When we got married we were almost 30,000$ in debt because him & his ex had gotten a car together in both their names and in the break up she got it and it got repossed. Now we are only 3,000$ in debt and thats mainly the car we are paying on now. It was a long road but we're slowly getting back to a good place. Amber V 10-27-2007, 03:15 PM We are in debt. We turning it around though. It has been slow but we are getting there. Erika 10-27-2007, 03:16 PM We have 2 car payments and some credit card debt. The CC debt will be paid off this year though Jennie 10-27-2007, 03:17 PM Yep, we are. Some stuff will be paid off within the next couple of months, some within the next year, and then some in 2010. :sigh Miss B Hav'n 10-27-2007, 03:30 PM Yes - in so much as we have the mortgage and car payments. We do not, however, have other debt (ie cc) - we did, but worked VERY hard to get OUT of it and are now working to stay out of it. breechum 10-27-2007, 03:30 PM Technically we are but not major. One car payment and a (high) credit card payment. Every other debt has been paid off. Heather 10-27-2007, 03:31 PM I say no. I paid off all our debts the begining of the year. I do have student loans I am paying on. I'll be paying on those for the next 100 years so thats more of a revolving thing IMO Kris 10-27-2007, 03:32 PM Yes but nothing major... small credit cards, student loans ect. Waking_Hour 10-27-2007, 03:37 PM Nope, no where close. DB is though. *sigh* Unless he got everything fixed. He wasn't majorly in debt. Ellen 10-27-2007, 03:44 PM Yes....we have debt. It's manageable - but it's still debt. Donna 10-27-2007, 03:55 PM I marked no. Our only payments are the normal living things and our car payment. We got rid of all the credit cards years ago. piggypunkinetta 10-27-2007, 03:58 PM We have debt, but not a lot. It will all be paid off within the next six months, cars included. Nickschic 10-27-2007, 04:02 PM Yes some but the cc will be paid off very soon. I belive its right around 2k in cc so its very manageable now. And we have the car payment. We have great credit compared to my whole family. I am happy about that. inmansgirl06 10-27-2007, 04:02 PM We do but we dont. I have a small student loan I am paying on and then 2 cc's. But DH had a car repo'd about 5 years ago, and we are making monthly payments on that now. But by december we will be DEBT free! well except the student loan, that will be paid off with tax returns! Dani 10-27-2007, 04:17 PM yes we have debt and will be out of debt minus a car and house payment within 12 months. Felicia 10-27-2007, 04:20 PM Thankfully we are not in debt, we do have a car payment, but thats about it. We had a lovely credit card debt left over from his ex, but we paid that off a while back. Lckychrmzz 10-27-2007, 04:32 PM I voted other b/c we have good debt.. a house. Other then that we dont have any. ltlfoot 10-27-2007, 04:41 PM I put "other" because it depends on who you talk to. We only have car payments. Some call it debt, others don't. MichelleB 10-27-2007, 05:13 PM Just student loans for me. If you're going to have debt it's the best kind to have, or so I've learned. Pebbles 10-27-2007, 05:17 PM We have a loan and a cc payment and we are tackling. It is nothing extreme or unmanageable. That's it for us, fortunately. Shaky 10-27-2007, 05:24 PM We own a home and have 1 car paymnt so yes. harrisonsdream 10-27-2007, 05:33 PM yes but not much. it's mostly school stuff (we have about 5k or so) that will be paid off by this summer CMPCAP 10-27-2007, 05:48 PM Yes, we are in debt but working on getting out of completely. We do not have a car payment just had too much fun before we had our daughter. LOL We will be debt free within a year though. Then we get to get back in again and buy a 2nd car but while we are getting out of debt I don't want a car payment to add to it. 360Sweetie 10-27-2007, 05:51 PM Nope..no debt at all.I will have a car payment in a few months but thats it.I only use my credit card for building credit so I only buy things online with it once a month and then pay it off. Aurora 10-27-2007, 06:26 PM Nope, but I've been incredibly lucky with my parents and their support. DB is crazy in debt though leftover 10-27-2007, 06:29 PM Nope. Amanda011784 10-27-2007, 08:45 PM i am so about saving! USCGBoxerMom 10-27-2007, 09:37 PM Yup... Cars House One CC leftover 10-27-2007, 10:10 PM who is this dave ramsey man? http://www.daveramsey.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Ramsey He's a financial genius who has developed a secular program so that people on the verge of bankrupcy can get out of debt.. As long as you don't have any serious aversions to Christianity, that is... Our church offers his programs as part of the adult sunday school classes.. It takes a bit of discipline to do it, but once you get the ball rolling, the results are almost immediate. I have his total money makeover on CD, I should start making copies of them.. FireChic05 10-27-2007, 10:11 PM I was out of debt until my ex now I am in some SEVERE debt ~*~Charity~*~ SIMMYBABEZ 10-27-2007, 10:12 PM Yes, we are paying it all off and it should be gone in about 5 years. :xfingers FTCWifey 10-27-2007, 10:18 PM Yup. DH came with some serious debt and financial stupidity so I took over and have been digging us out slowly but surely. harrisonsdream 10-27-2007, 10:22 PM thanks leftover sgmwife1 10-27-2007, 10:25 PM :woohoo :woohoo :woohoo I (L) Dave Ramsey! :yahoo I paid off $16,000 in 2 years thanks to that man's plan.. Currently on baby step 6, trying to pay down our mortages (yes, two houses) so that we can re-fi each to 15 years.. THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!:hugs We couldnt have survived without FPU. leftover 10-27-2007, 10:54 PM THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!:hugs We couldnt have survived without FPU. I don't know where I'd be otherwise.. :lol I wouldn't have survived either.. I ended up doing the "envelope system" until I could get used to budgeting.. About 5 months.... It was so hard, but because it was so simple, it actually worked... It really did! I felt like such a retard because I had to budget like that, but it's the baby step that I needed to start out with. It kinda helped that Russ was in Iraq, and I had no excuses or bad influences.. Dave Ramsey's Envelope System On a budget? Still over-spending? Trying to figure out the best way to organize your finances and spend wisely? You Need a Simple System I found out that Grandma's way to handle money still works. People used to always use cash envelopes to control their monthly spending, but very few do in today's card swiping culture. The envelope system is a key component of the Total Money Makeover Plan because it works. Here are a few simple rules for starting a cash envelope system. Budget each paycheck. Budget (http://www.daveramsey.com/the_truth_about/budgeting_3457.html.cfm) is a dirty word to most people, but you must budget down to the last dime if you're going to successfully implement the envelope system. Divide and conquer. Of course, there will be budget items that you cannot include in your envelope system, like bills paid by check or automatic withdraw. However, you can create categories like food, gas, clothing and entertainment. Fill 'er Up. After you've categorized your cash expenses, fill each envelope with the money allotted for it in your budget. For example, if you allow $100 for clothing, put $100 in cash in your clothing envelope for the month. When it's gone, it's gone. Once you've spent all the money in a given envelope, you're done spending for that category. If you go on a shopping spree and spend the $100 in your clothing envelope, you can't spend any more on clothes until you budget for that category again. That means no visits to the ATM to withdraw more money! Don't be tempted. While debit cards can't get you directly into debt, if used carelessly, they can cause you to over-spend. There's something psychological about spending cash that hurts more than swiping a piece of plastic. If spending cash whenever possible can become a habit, you'll be less likely to over-spend or buy on impulse. Give it time. It will take a few months to perfect your envelope system. Don’t give up after a month or two if it's not clicking. You'll get the hang of it and see how beneficial the envelope system is as you dump debt, build wealth, and achieve financial peace! See....simple!Certainly, some bills may come in at different times of the month, so you'll need to adjust your written game plan to take it one step further. You need to plan the budget based upon your pay periods. Say that you get paid twice a month. If you can write down which bills you plan on paying from each paycheck, you will not be left with a surprise bill. Spend each month's income and each individual paycheck on paper BEFORE it comes in. Have Some Fun I also have no problem with you adding an envelope with money just to "blow." As long as you and your spouse have agreed on it, you are fine. There should be no lying. Agree on your budget, agree on your blow money, and be open. Blow money can be anything you want it to be. There are no rules on that envelope, unlike money in the "entertainment" envelope that is used specifically for entertainment. sgmwife1 10-27-2007, 11:08 PM I don't know where I'd be otherwise.. Chuck and I took the class together right before a major deployment. I had us well on our way by the time he got home. Now it is our way of life. I only live about an hour 1/2 from Daves office. I have not met him personally though I would LOVE to. twoboys 10-27-2007, 11:09 PM unfortunately yes thejibstah 10-28-2007, 01:50 AM Oooooh yeah!:depressed I have around $30,000 in school loans (becaues my parents made too much money, even though they weren't helping me AT ALL with school, unless you are married or over 24 you have to include them on your FAFSA:reallymad:handup:censored) and I still have 2 more years to go after this one (I transfered). We have one car payment. Not sure where that stands at the moment, that was a DH thing pre-marriage. :rolleyes Other than that we just have a small amount of credit card debt left over from when I moved down here. I mean less than $2000, and that gets paid $150 - $300 twice a month, so it's dwindling away nicely. So really it is just all the darn school debt that I stress over. I know it's considered 'good' debt, but honestly it stresses me WAAAYYYY out to even THINK about it and about how much it is going to be when I'm done. :no:sadeyes:mumble I have filled out my FAFSA since getting married, just waiting to see how much it's going to be. Hopefully it'll be helpful!:pray Bryanna 10-28-2007, 01:55 AM i put other haha but its because although i am not LEGALLY in debt... ie not in debt with anything that would affect my credit score or cause me problems HOWEVER i DO owe friends money... but to be fair, some of them owe me... we dont keep close track haha. and i owe my mom money but not LEGAL debts to be paid :) Shannon Marie 10-28-2007, 02:17 AM Thanks to student loans it will be a long while until i'm debt free. But that's why i went to college....to work. thus to get money. thus to pay off the schooling which enabled me to work. Vicious cycle.:sigh s. rosa 10-28-2007, 06:04 AM we are, but only because dh bought an almost new car right at the beginning of our relationship...had we been more serious at the time, i wouldn't have let him do it. now we have these sky-high monthly payments, that we can technically afford, but we don't have anything left over after bills. it's frustrating but it's his car and because we don't have kids i don't really have a legit reason to make him get rid of it. :sigh hopefully it will be paid off soon. or we win the lottery. either way. Pam 10-28-2007, 09:50 AM I voted yes however, we will have our car paid off by the end of the year and will only have our small mortgage on a lot that we own until we purchase a house next year when DH has his orders. gunsgirl 10-28-2007, 11:03 AM the only debt I consider bad debt is my 6, grand in credit card debt. But I will have that paid off by feb. we do own our own home and have our cars financed but I do not consider that "debt"... breakaley 10-28-2007, 11:14 AM Oh yeah! 2 cars that I cant get rid of and other various loans,:tears. Jen 10-28-2007, 01:36 PM yup *Crystal* 10-28-2007, 01:53 PM We have some. DH has student loans, we have a car payment and a few credit cards. Brandi 10-28-2007, 02:41 PM Yep, we have cars we are paying on, as well as credit cards. But we are not in debt up to our eyeballs or struggling or anything. We have a manageable amount of debt that is steadily improving our credit scores :yes kittieb 10-28-2007, 02:56 PM only 5000 we are getting better at it! whooo! Amanda 10-29-2007, 07:36 PM yes, we own a house and a car but the debt our ex's left us with is the stuff we hope to be done with by the time tax time is around :) Rach 10-30-2007, 01:57 PM Yes....toooooo much :sigh He had more debt than me when we met, but together we've racked about $10K...So we've got loans, cc's, and school loans to pay. We almost filed bankruptcy but we are working hard at it b/c I have faith and refuse to. A lot of days it seems like it will never ago away as something always seems to come up, it stresses us out every day, but I know that eventually it will. I have us on a budget plan for so many years to get it paid. We're tight every month, but that debt is most important over buying something fun. I have a very hard time now parting w/ money unless it's going to bills. I'll have to look at that dave ramsey guy's site. lacy+chk 10-30-2007, 02:00 PM i said other because i have a lot in student loans, but i don't have to pay those until i graduate...and all of my other finances are pretty much in order :) familyof4 10-30-2007, 02:20 PM Yeah we are because we own a home and have one truck payment, but that's going bye bye soon.. YEAH!! :) But other than those two things we are good. sharine25 10-30-2007, 02:31 PM No debts from my side before I got married.... But hubby had CC debt from his ex wife which he finally paid off..She apparently felt it was all right to spend 7000 within 6 months on buying stuff for herself and paying her family a vacation to Myrtle Beach... We did buy a car last year and finally paid it off early this month so we are no longer in debt..no more bills to pay except for phone and internet...it's so nice...:D Kristen 10-30-2007, 02:34 PM I have a consolidated student loan. Together we have one car payment, one credit card we're still working on, and we're about to have a mortgage. So, I'm happy with where we are. I want to pay off that last credit card, and once that is done, I'll feel good about our debt. Ashnbri 10-31-2007, 10:49 PM I put other because I am not..but DH is....so I guess it is my debt now huh? :lol. He has a big student loan, and a few thousand worth of credit card and other small people to pay off. billysgirl 10-31-2007, 10:51 PM i would say so, i have school loans and credit card debt, i just finished paying off the car... ugh!!! gottli10 11-15-2007, 10:44 AM I have no debt. I was lucky enough to have my parents pay for my college education. On the other hand, DH has a couple thousand in debt for student loans, but it's almost paid off!! I'm a stickler on being debt free (unless its for a house or car) b/c I really want to retire early. Kara 11-15-2007, 10:52 AM All we have is my little school loans and those payments don't begin for another year and a half. And his little truck payment that we hope to pay off before I begin paying my school loans:) luvmysailor81904 11-15-2007, 11:30 AM I would say no because the only "debt" we have is a small car payment but I really don't consider that debt I guess. |
