Hey My name is toni, I just joined this group because Dh just recieved orders to San Diego. Things are a little confusing because we were originally supposed to be heading to Mayport Florida. Hubby's Lt called him yesterday and told him that he was accepted into a flag mess in San Diego. We dont know where, when, who or anything. Then his Lt went on leave so we cant even find out. But we know that we are heading West.. We are really excited about it too. I am originally from NYC and he is from San Jose. We will probably not live in base housing so I was wondering what are some good areas to look at. I know that we dont know exactly where we are going just yet, he just keeps saying San Diego, I guess that means Naval station... Not sure but just introducing myself and trying to get a hold on the area. Thanks Toni

There are four bases here, navy bases. Two in Coronado, very nice place to live. One in San Diego, the big base. The sub base is in Point Loma, another nice place to live. www.rent.net is a nice place to look for apartments.

Thanks.. That will help a lot. I actually have another question. DH and I are planning on getting a new cell provider, we have nextel and are paying WAY too much for the walkie talkie feature. We are thinking of either getting Verizon or Cingular. What companies have good/bad reception..

Nikki

I know Cingular has good reception but their customer service and billing sucks....I am not sure on Verizon.

Hubby is going to be stationed at Coronado. Exactly where is that? He said something about a bridge. Is it expensive to live out in town. Is the military housing nice? I ask because where we are stationed the housing is old and not nice.

Well, in my opinion, the "bad" area is National City. I think that's the worst. That is where the 32nd base is located.

Then there's Chula Vista, which isn't exactly great, but if you get in a decent location (Eastlake, Bonita- I think is ok, not sure), than you'd be fine.

Santee & El Cajon are in East County and those are ok and tend to be cheaper and where a lot of military live (mainly El Cajon over Santee) b/c of the price...but not exactly the NICEST. However, I'd live there if we found the right place.

Coronado is kind of a large island. You can get to it by the huge bridge or the strip that connects to Imperial Beach.

It is a very nice island. I believe it has the lowest crime rate in the county. Pretty expensive though. The homes are worth millions but there very tiny homes. Like "alley" way homes.

It's not really that much more expensive. You can find a "decent" place and pocket some of his BAH or you can use all of his BAH and find a nice townhome or what not. Housing is ok. Haven't lived in it, but I've been in quite a few of them and some of the girls here live in them.

Murphy Canyon is central San Diego and is more like homes instead of townhomes. About 15 min. from North Island (coronado)

Serra Mesa is a new housing. That is like a townhome and is also centrally located. Also about 15 min.

Lofgren housing is townhomes and located in Eastlake which is about 25 min. to Coronado as it is located in South County, next to Chula Vista.

Here is a site that lists the housings. Don't follow the "wait" months as it isn't necessarily correct.

The two bedroom waiting list at Silver Strand, in Coronado, is quite short. If you need more than two bedrooms then the waiting list is long and some housings are under renovation so that kind of makes things a little different. Coronado is very nice, if you can find a place you can afford it is a great place to live.

Most housing is really nice. I live in Murphy Canyon and I love it! They are either new or newly renovated. Housing in town is SO EXPENSIVE! Unless you live in a so-so area, then your BAH probably will not be enough to cover all your expenses. HTH

Ive made it to coronado from Lofgreen in about 15 minutes, you go down the 805 then cut across the strand.

You should definately try to get into Silver Strand housing. One of the girls off of here lives there and it is really nice there. There is a short waiting list and it is only like 5 minutes from North Island.

froglove
02-10-2006, 12:55 AM

Hey guys! Got some questions for you all. DH is stationed in SD on the Tarawa. We have decided to go ahead & look into selling our house here & moving out there.

Where are the best places to look? What housing is the best? Where should we stay away from? Someone told us there is housing that has a DoD school near by. Is that true?

Where are the best elementary schools?

I'd appreciate any input!

Cat

I don't know if anywhere had DOD schools. I believe all the housing is going to be ppv soon so it will all be ran by lincoln. We live in The Village at NTC. It is one of the newer housings. I'll give you some links so you can see the newer housing sites. They have been redoing alot of the housing sites so I can't say about most, only mine. It all depends on what rank and how long you want to wait. Some housings have tiny tot programs, murphy canyon and admiral hartman. We have an onsite state preschool, but it is income based so most don't qualify. They are working on fixing that though. I love where I live, we are close to alot and my dd is in a great elementary. We picked her school and did the choice program to get her in. It is still in the same area, just not her home school.

Here is the link for lincoln. I'm sure ladies from other housings can help more with info about them. I hope you find something that works for your family. :)

We decided to go ahead & move because we miss DeWayne very much & he can't stand being away from the kids! We want to move as soon as the house is sold.

Debra
03-05-2006, 12:14 AM
Thank you so much, Piggy! I appreciate it!

DH is an E-6. The wait will depend on how quickly our house sells here.

What school does your DD go to? How do you go about choosing a school? DS would be going into 2nd grade by the time we got there.

Thank you again for your help!

piggypunkinetta

My dd goes to Silver gate. It is an awesome school here in Point Loma. Here is San Diego not all schools are equal. It all depends on funding and silver gate is better funded. They have after school programs, they are not free, but not expensive either. They also have a music program and an art program.

Here is a link to find out schools API, the higher the better.

oh i know that feeling believe me. you all need to be closer to him even if he goes to sea for awhile. at least if you can sell the house fairly quickly and can get out there while he is still in SD before he has to go to sea that will be a good thing. im sure thats the best thing all around. but we will miss you guys a whole lot. hopefully we will be out there in SD sometime in mid 08 ourselves and i am sure you all will still be there then wont you? And we were definitely gonna be living or trying to get a place where piggypunkietta told you about. those places look great.

well before you all do move we need to have another night out and let you watch robbie a few more times before you all do move.

everybody seems to be moving away this year. amanda (charliesangel) is moving somewhere else, Mandi will be moving somewhere this year and i dont know about anyone else down here. it wont be the same without you down here Debra. I know we just got here and you all were so excited about us coming, but then again I do know you all belong with Dewayne too. He needs to be with you and the kids.

I wish you lots of luck on being able to sell the house quickly

03-30-2006, 07:54 PM
The points thing....you earn points by replying to threads and/or starting new threads. You can use the points at the e-store which is at the top of the page (you can click on). You can save them, buy little gifts for people on the board...like if you notice under my name but down a little bit I have some things like the lollypop and the turtles...those are some of the types of gifts you can buy. I think there is a whole thread on here somewhere that will tell you all about it. Let me see if I can find it for you.

sunshyne
03-30-2006, 07:55 PM
