Merry Christmas is usually what pops out of my mouth. Occcassionally I'll say Happy Holidays, but for the most part, it's Merry Christmas.

Crystal520
10-30-2007, 02:53 PM
The only reason why I ask is because I remember when I was working in retail, we had this big meeting about what we were supposed to say, but even though they wanted us to say "Happy Holidays" I said "Merry Christmas" because that is what I celebrated along with other traditions.

Kat

I say Merry Christmas, and I'll say it until the day I die. Cuz I'm just Christmasy like that. :P

I default to Merry Christmas, but if I know someone is of a different faith I try to say the right one to them. I absolutely NEVER say Happy Holidays. It just smacks of commericalism to me and totally ruins the magic of Christmas. In England we sometimes say Happy Christmas too which I do say over here.

I will clarify...I usually say "Merry Christmas", but when I'm doing Christmas cards and such, and the card already says "Merry Christmas" in it, I will write "Happy Holidays" in whatever personal message I'm doing to that specific person because I don't want to duplicate the "Merry Christmas" that was already in the card. LOL. I know, I'm :screwy

I will be saying Merry Christmas, because that's what I believe. Do I get offended when a Jewish person says "Happy Hanukkah" to me? No. Goes the same way with every other holiday. :)

Happy Holidays until it's Dec. 24 or 25.... then it's Merry Christmas.

I usually say Happy Holidays but that's because I have a wide variety of kids with whom I deal (they ride my bus) and I have a lot of different nationalities and religions on there. I always tell them to have a "good vacation" instead of Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas or whatever. Same goes for any holiday, especially the religious ones.

Yes we call them holiday or Christmas trees since we celebrate both Christmas & Yule or Winter Solstice. We also have a Yule log!

Merry Christmas. I've always said that instead of Happy Holidays so out of habit that is what comes out of my mouth. Even when I'm out and people say Happy Holidays I tend to just come back with Merry Christmas. Once in a great while I will say Happy Holidays. I don't mean it out of disrespect. It is just habit for me to say Merry Christmas.

I will most likely be saying, Happy Chanukah, Happy Holidays, & Merry Christmas. Depends on WHO I am talking to, strangers or casual acquaintances get Happy Holidays as I don't know what they believe or if they are celebrating anything. Close friends and family members get Merry Christmas OR Happy Chanukah depending on what they celebrate.

The reason why my default is Happy Holidays is because there are MANY more then just Christmas going on during winter and I like everyone to feel included.

I don't usually say any of them! With someone wishes me Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, f--k off, whatever, I usually just say "Same to you!"

That is pretty much what I do. If someone says it to me, I'll say "you too" but I don't offer the sentiment first ...I stick with have a nice day. I guess on Christmas day I probably say merry Christmas, but I really only see family, and it is actually Christmas.

taraw226
10-30-2007, 11:39 PM
i say "happy holidays" unless someone specifically wishes me a merry christmas first, then i'll respond in kind. i don't think that's being "too PC" or anything, if i don't know someone's religion or whatnot, i don't want to assume so "happy holidays" works better for me :dunno

I always say Happy Holidays. I grew up in an area with alot of different religions so we just didn't say Merry Christmas much unless you KNEW you were talking to someone who celebrated Christmas. For me though I like Happy Holidays......December is like an entire holiday in itself to me.......plus New Years.

:yes I guess that's what I would say but usually unless it's Christmas day with family/friends I don't say anything at all. :shrug If someone says something to me I'll either repeat it back to them or just say thanks same to you or something like that. I usually don't say it on my own. :)

It really depends on who I am talking to. If it is family, I usually say "happy Christmas" (yeah I know I always say happy not merry, its weird, but i've always done that :heehee) But if its just someone I was casually talking to at work, I think I would say "happy holidays" :dunno though, its never been a big deal to me. I just go with whatever feels appropriate/polite.

I'll say Merry Christmas. I'm not even a Christian, per se--I was raised Catholic, but I'm pretty much an agnostic now--but I do love Christmas. If I was saying it to someone who I KNEW didn't celebrate Christmas I would probably say Happy Holidays though.
