In light of the holiday threads, what are your thoughts on saying 'X-mas' ?

ETA: Instead of saying, thoughts on writing/seeing it.

I don't think I've ever SAID X-Mas, but I'm sure I've written it a time or two.

I use it when I type because I am lazy sometimes.. I never say X-mas though I just type it.

I really try to stay away from it. We celebrate the CHRIST in Christmas, so I try to avoid it at all costs. It doesn't particularly bother me if others use it, I understand that it's just a short-hand for many people...but for me personally, I try not to use it.

Didn't you and I have this discussion last Christmas?! :lol

Ok, saying probably wasn't the best word to use..

And yes Kelsey, we probably did!

For me, I personally don't even like reading it because it's like ex-ing Christ out of Christmas. I'll write C-mas instead.

I feel the same! The whole point of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ

I don't really see anything wrong with x-mas if you're trying to write it quickly, but I don't.

I went to a private school when I was a kid, and I vividly remember a teacher lecturing us about how writing "X-mas" was evil, and how you HAVE to write the FULL word otherwise it's disrespectful to Christ. She kinda engrained it in my head.... so I always write "Christmas."

Like I said, "X-mas" doesn't bother me now that I'm grown up enough to know better... but I still write the full word... out of habit.

Being an atheist, X-mas is just fine with me.
I have loved the pagen origins of the holiday...
For me it is about my family, my kids and their experiences.

I've heard many people say that when you write X-Mas, you are Xing out Christ...meaning you are taking him out of it! I can understand why some believe it. I happen to not, though! ;)

I don't care...I write X-mas,Christmas, C-mas. We are Agnostic so we don't celebrate Christ at Christmas. It's all about family and friends and gifts and stuff.

I thought this was interesting:

The word "Christ" and its compounds, including "Christmas", have been abbreviated for at least the past 1,000 years, long before the modern "Xmas" was commonly used. "Christ" was often written as "XP" or "Xt"; there are references in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as far back as 1021 AD. This X and P arose as the uppercase forms of the Greek letters χ and ρ), used in ancient abbreviations for Χριστος (Greek for "Christ"), and are still widely seen in many Eastern Orthodox icons depicting Jesus Christ. The labarum, an amalgamation of the two Greek letters rendered as ☧, is a symbol often used to represent Christ in Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christian Churches.[1]

Here's the rest if you want to read more!

I don't believe in Christ, so I could care less if people "x" the Christ part out of Christmas. Since I did know about the Greek word for Christ (Χριστος), I never saw it as disrespectful even when I was Christian. It doesn't have to be English to be legitimate to me.

Exactly. :yes So, I call it Christmas and could care less who is offended by that.

I have written X mas before and can assure you 100% that it's not mean as Xing Christ! I'm either in a hurry if I type it like that or just lazy. It doesnt bother me if other people write it like that either. I'm a Christian and actually never saw it that way.

I write it and say it that way sometimes. We celebrate Christ during that time of the year, but my family really makes a bigger deal out of Easter since it's more important biblically to us. Xmas doesn't offend me at all. X could be a cross, not just an x if you want to put meaning behind it. Really, my religion doesn't have Mass, so Christ+Mass = Christmas and we still say the mas part. I don't think the name of a holiday is so important. Easter isn't "Dead man walking day," after all.

BTW, there are people who see the x in "x-mas" as the sign of the cross. Hardly x-ing out Christ, since the cross is a symbol of Christ's sacrifice.

VinnysGirl

I prefer to write is as Christmas just because it's prettier to me! I'm also Christian and prefer to have the basis of my faith in the word! :D

To each their own though!

then why not write "t-mas" as the t is more of a cross than an x.

I'm Christian but I will write xmas at times. I don't look at it is disrespecting Christ. Heck, we give each other gifts and decorate our home in christmas stuff. How is that celebrating his birth? It's not.

Yeah I say it.

But more than anything- I say Chrissie.

I don't believe in Christ- but Christmas is hardly about Christ anymore anyway.

It's all about presents, food, decorations and loved ones.

Just what I love!

I don't like hearing it said-doesn't sound right. But I don't mind seeing it written. To me, it's just short hand like writting lol instead of Laugh Out Loud.

If you research it XMas is not taking Christ out of anything. Try Google you will be pleasantly surprised.
Here is an article xplaining ( :) ) that the X is not taking Christ out of anything. I am sure the Christians here can find many more examples of it's history and use then I can.

http://www.cresourcei.org/symbols/xmasorigin.html

http://www.christmaspast.info/forums/Main01/messages/647932485.html

Hint Google "origin of Xmas".

The abbreviation of Xmas for Christmas is not irreligious. The first letter of the word Christ in Greek is chi, which is identical to our X. Xmas was originally an ecclesiastical abbreviation that was used in tables and charts. In the early days of printing, when font sizes were limited and type was set by hand, abbreviations and ditto marks were used liberally. Xmas came into general use from the church!

The Origin of "Xmas"
The abbreviation of "Xmas" for Christmas, long reviled by many conservative and Low Church Christians, is not nearly as blasphemous as many contend. Rather than a sacrilegious removal of "Christ" from Christmas and replacing him with an unknown, as some claim, the "Xmas" abbreviation has a long history in the church. In Greek, the language in which the New Testament was first written, "chi" (c or C), which is almost identical to the Roman alphabet "X," is the first letter of the word "Christ" (cristoV, or as it would be written in older manuscripts, CRISTOS). In fact, the symbol of the fish in the early church came from using the first letter of several titles used for Jesus (Jesus Christ Son of God Savior) that when combined spelled the Greek word for fish (icquV, ichthus).

In the early days of printing when typesetting was done by hand and was very tedious and expensive, abbreviations were common. The church began to use the abbreviation "X" for the word "Christ" in religious publications. From there, the abbreviation moved into general use in newspapers and other publications, and "Xmas" became an accepted way of printing "Christmas."

I type x-mas sometimes because it's quicker. I generally just type Christmas out though. I don't think I have every said x-mas. Because honestly, isn't it just as easy to say x-mas as it is Christmas. It's not really any longer saying it. :P
