Do you get offended when someone says Merry Christmas? That always gets me. Stores have to say Happy Holidays so as not to offend people. I had SUCH a hard time doing that when I was working retail. I guess I'm just not PC, what can I say? :giggle I was just wondering if anyone gets offended and why...

Nope! I don't care if someone says Merry Christmas, Merry Xmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukah (sorry if I spelled that wrong), or any other holiday greeting or gesture...I take it as someone wishing me well or good.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! lol As someone else said, I appreciate the gesture. I hate being "forced" to be generic so as not to offend people.

I prefer to hear Merry Christmas.

So they say Happy Holidays so as not to offend anyone. What about those that are offended by "Happy Holidays"?

It's pretty hard to offend me.

I will say though, I said "Happy Holidays" to someone once while I was working retail. Not because the store told me to, but because it's what I normally say. And the lady flipped out on me and told me how stupid it was that the store had us say "Happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas."

When I told her that it was my CHOICE to say it, she bitched at me some more for being too "PC".

Sometimes you just can't win. What a bitch.

Why do people get offended by happy holidays? Both greetings have good intentions, I don't get it.

I, personally, don't get "offended" by Happy Holidays. I just don't like the fact that some people are FORCED (or feel forced) to say it. I really don't see why someone would actually get offended, though. That's a new one for me! lol

I don't know either. I don't know why people are offended period. Just asking and putting out there. People are offended by Merry Christmas apparently or people wouldn't be forced to say Happy Holidays so as not to offend. Merry Christmas is a well intended greeting also. Just imagine there are people that are offended by the other.

I think all in all, we are trying to please everyone around us WAY too much. Honestly... I could really gives a rats patootie whether or not something that I say because I believe in it upsets someone else. It's my freedom to speak.. I'm not spray painting it on their lawn or making them say it. That's the problem with PC. It's one thing to be polite... it's another to walk on eggshells...

That being said...

I don't care what people say to me... who am I to tell them what they have to say to me... it's whatev! :D

I usually say Happy Holidays (after spending 7 years in retail) But I do it because it just seems to fit better for me. Then again, I don't care if people DO get offended. I am trying to be nice. How can a friendly gesture be offensive?

This is the only time I get offended. If I say Happy Holidays and I get a lecture about how "Jesus is the reason for the season". Yeah, not for everyone. Get over yourself. :rolleyes

Otherwise, I don't care! And I will say the same thing people say to me back to them if they say it first.

I don't get offended by any of it. I'm more offended by the 1 person out of 100that has to make an issue of it all the way to the Supreme Court. IMO just because you may not share the same holiday traditions as others doesn't mean that you cannot be polite when they give a greeting, whichever holiday it is that they greet you with.

Nope as long as you (general) don't get offended if I say Happy Chanukah.

I always read this in my head as Ch-anukah with the ch sound. Is that incorect?

Anyway my general feeling is that they are all greetings. When working retail I just said Happy Holidays so that I did not have to try to remember which holiday was in season and then I never said the "wrong" thing to a customer. Some customers would say their beliefs first, like Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah (sp) and I would just wish them the same. One time I do remember saying Merry Christmas and this very nice older man said Happy Hanukah in response. It did not bother me in the least and he was smiling and looked as though he was not offended either.

I don't see saying Happy holidays as trying to be "PC". I see it as trying to encompass everyone as a whole. You never know what someone celebrates and Happy Holidays just covers all of the bases, and should please most everyone :yes

I don't really celebrate anything anymore, so when people tell me Happy Holidays I just sort of chuckle inside

I don't care what they say, as long as it is sincere. I think that sometimes people just say it out of habit... I like it best when it's heartfelt.

No, I don't get offended if someone says, "Happy Hanukka or Kwanzaa", either. The way I see it the person wishing me a happy whatever-holiday obviously celebrates that holiday. I simply return a, "and to you, too" and smile. WHAT is there to be offended about?

Great point...not to mention, why should "I" (as in any retail person doing the greeting) have to change my belief/s?

i agree with the point as well, but i dont see it as you having to change your beliefs. you're simply wishing them to enjoy their holidays.

I definitley don't get offend it if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas (which is what I say) Happy Holiday, Happy Hannukah or any of those. It's nice to hear someone wishing well to someone. I don't like to be force to say something though. When I was working at the Ritz Carlton (Hotel) they forced us to answer the phones with "Seasons Greenting"

I say happy holidays b/c I just think that it's presumptious to wish someone a merry xmas when they might not celebrate xmas. It just doesn't make ANY sense to me to say merry xmas unless I am talking to someone who DOES celebrate xmas. I don't get offended if someone says holidays xmas chunnakah (sorry killed that word) or anything of the sort. But I dont' want to wish everyone a merry xmas b/c they might NOT be having a merry xmas they might be having a happy kwanza or whatever their choice of holiday is. So I personally say Happy Holidays :)

I get a tidge bit offended if it's a store or restaurant or some sort of business. If it's a friend or something, I don't mind at all. I just figure to go with the sentiment.

I was hell'a pissed though when DB forwarded me the little blurb about his ship's "Christmas Party", which happens to fall in early Dec. (read: nowhere near Christmas, and actually during Hanukkah). It just pissed me off 'cos this is the Navy, they're supposed to be non-denominational, and I think that's BS.

But, it's more of an "offended 'cos they should know better," and less of a "personally wounded" offended, if that makes any sense?

I am not offended by Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays, etc. I find it appalling though that some get their panties in a wad for someone saying Merry Christmas to them though. Greetings are done with good intentions, merriment, etc so just take it for what it is.

Does it really matter though what they call their party whether it is a Christmas/Holiday party? I just think it is such a futile thing to get pissed about as you said. JMHO!:mrgreen

um.......i dont get offended but then everyone i talk to says merry christmas-that is what my family and friends celebrate. i know last year we went to a store and they were not allowed to say merry christmas-because of religous differences. i guees someone complained about it. to be honest i think it is wishing someone a happy time-whichever way they celebrate it. but it does offend me when someone says merry xmas. i cant stand that-but thats just me-and i realize everyone has their own beleives so i dont judge anyone about it, i just dont like it.

I think that making a person say a specific holiday greeting takes away the freedom to express their self and that is more offensive then saying Merry Christmas or Happy Haunaka (sp)

I don't get offended if someone says happy Holidays to me unless they know me well.

And with stores, its more then Christmas they are selling for, so saying it there is appropriate. Its not just for Christmas in the stores so why should they say Christmas. Unless you want then posting all the greetings for the multiple holidays in that time frame.
