View Full Version : Karate for kids?
Brandi 10-31-2007, 11:55 AM Do any of you have your kids enrolled in karate? If so, how old were they when you enrolled them?
I'm talking to two places close by that do Karate and Brazilian JiuJitsu with kids classes. I think Jaxon would LOVE this, as it would be a way for him to channel his energy, teach him self discipline and probably help with some of his sensory issues.
Traci 10-31-2007, 11:57 AM DD did it for a year. she was 4 and did great with it. Then we moved and just never put her back in.We put her in bowling instead. She has ADHD pretty bad so her Dr suggested some type of individual sport.
Brandi 10-31-2007, 11:59 AM What are the costs like? I have heard everything from $25ish a month up to $100+ a month, but I haven't gotten a definite price from either place I'm inquiring about right now.
Jessica 10-31-2007, 12:00 PM My nephew takes karate classes. He started at the age of 8. My sis pu thim in because he has adhd and since he has started it is like he is a completely different child. He has learned to focus better and has learned self discipline. His younger brother who is 3 just started to and is slowly starting to show a change in his focus and stuff. I have been thinking of putting dd in classes but she is more into gymnastics and dance.
RockstarMom 10-31-2007, 12:04 PM We pulled Aiden from his one class that was $7/wk. We're enrolling him at the end of Nov at the YMCA. $51 (for members)for 8 wks + military gets another 10%. :woot
we're enrolling Z in the program at the YMCA as soon as she turns 5 (the min age) --- it's very cost effective
*Melissa* 10-31-2007, 12:16 PM We just enrolled our 6yr old ds... he loves it!! We have a youth center on base and it's a program though them. It's only $40 a month and he's goes Monday and Wed night for an hour.
bettyboop604 10-31-2007, 12:17 PM I have my boys (7+11) in a great class. Its called Hard Soft (I can never remember the actual name). It combines Tae Kwon Do (my husband has a black belt), Aikido, Tai Chi... its great. I love the teachers! They have been teaching kids for over a decade. There is a guy and a girl... Sensi Russ and Victoria. They teach at the Kroc Center... a place I highly recommend for all sorts of activities. It costs $40 bucks for 4 weeks and they go twice a week. So essentially its like $5 a class. You do not need to buy them the uniform... my kids still go in gym clothes. They are really patient and they have fun with the kids while teaching them control of their bodies. They even meditate before each class... for a few seconds.
The ages start at five and go all the way. I have even seen fathers and sons go together.
If you ever want to watch a class, just PM me.
:)
Jennygirl 10-31-2007, 12:17 PM My husband taught taekwondo to little kids...We will be enrolling our kids into MA when they are older..With him having 2 black belts in Taekwondo and Judo, its going to happen...
Depending on what you take and where you take it deterimines the cost effectiveness...
Also, some of them take concentration from the little ones, they dont get to just run around and do whatever...

The youth center or YMCA would be alot less than a private school. I can't remember how much we paid but I know it was more than we wanted to. You also have extra stuff(knee pads, mouth guard, elbow pad, bag, well we did) that some school want you to get. I would look into a few places. the prices range from low to high.
Mommy2Bailey 10-31-2007, 01:21 PM My son is 9 and just started taking karate. He loves it and I do believe it helps with disipline
lisa0323 10-31-2007, 02:46 PM My DS is 5 and he is starting Karate at the YMCA tomorrow. He is very excited about it.
It's a great price, $40 for 8 weeks if you are a member.

You have to be 5, right? Maybe I'll wait until March because that's when he turns 5. :sadeyes
Ray started this year. Our classes are $7 a week. And its nicer now, alot of kids have left the class. It use to be big.
He loves it cause he has already got 2 awards, and in Dec will go to toury for yellow belt.
MIKOSWIFEY 10-31-2007, 07:01 PM The younger you start them, the better. It really helps them develop skills with respecting adults, following instructions, gets their energy out, and teaches them to restrain themselves and not be led by emotion. It also helps them develop an honor system. :)
ltlfoot 10-31-2007, 07:12 PM I was in karate when I was younger. I really enjoyed it. I started at around 7. My brother and I both stopped going around my 5th grade year. I say go for it!

Really? All it taught me was how to Karate chop at things when they scare me!
*Funny story. I actually busted my dad's eardrum! Dad's, do NOT, i repeat, do NOT bust in wearing a scary mask while your child is sitting on the toilet reading!"
