View Full Version : Elderly driving restrictions?
kait623 10-31-2007, 08:11 PM I am writing a paper on elderly driving restrictions and could use some opinions before I start (I will tell you later my stance on the issue)
1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly?
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions?
3. Why are you for/against restrictions?
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Why (physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? How did you (or someone else) approach them on the issue and how did they react?
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions?
Thanks everyone! I placed this here because it can be a controversial topic
harrisonsdream 10-31-2007, 08:18 PM 1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly? yes
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions? 65 or whenever the person begins to exhibit signs of deterioration
3. Why are you for/against restrictions? having seen many accidents caused by elderly drivers (in FL) and knowing that there are lots of elderly drivers out there who do have slower reaction times is scary
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Why (physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? How did you (or someone else) approach them on the issue and how did they react? yes, my grandfather. he was having lots of problems due to his diabetes but it is getting better now that he is getting it under control
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions? no i think this is definitely one of those cases that the safety of the majority needs to be looked at over the benefits of the few
sgmwife1 11-01-2007, 10:02 AM 1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly?I am 100% FOR restrictions or at least mandatory retesting.
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions? No specific age...everyone "ages" differently. But if I have to give an age I would say 60.
3. Why are you for/against restrictions? I am for restrictions because I think at a certain point in life the challenge of safely driving is a real factor. Who wants to admit they are having struggles because of age?
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Why (physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? How did you (or someone else) approach them on the issue and how did they react? Yes I have some one who is approaching the point of not being a safe driver. Vision is one reason. He can see fine during the day...but he CANNOT drive at night.
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions? NO.
PrincessBlue505 11-01-2007, 11:08 AM 1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly? FOR mandated testing to determine if restrictions are necessary
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions? About 65 should be the beginning age for yearly testing
3. Why are you for/against restrictions? I'm for it because physical deterioration can happen quickly. It shouldn't be left up to family members who may be afraid to confront their elder and/or the elderly to determine themselves since a lot will keep driving after they're not safe anymore. It's for the safety of the public and that should be determined by the DMV with standardized tests instead of at the discrestion of famiy and the elderly themselves.
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Why (physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? No on has lived that long. :( How did you (or someone else) approach them on the issue and how did they react?
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions? Absolutely not. Driving is a privilage, not a right.
Ellen 11-01-2007, 11:11 AM 1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly? If they are capable drivers, then they should be able to have their license.
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions?
I think at 60, they should be road tested again, and then every 2 years road tested.
3. Why are you for/against restrictions? I've seen my father drive :(
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Why (physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? How did you (or someone else) approach them on the issue and how did they react? My dad doesn't drive much anymore....his own decision. He realized that he probably SHOULDN'T be driving... He's 77.
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions? No, I don't. I think it's a matter of public safety....
1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly? For
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions? 65 +
3. Why are you for/against restrictions? Because at some point most drivers eye sight deteriorates, their reaction time slows, and to be completely honest I am tired of them doing 40 in a 55.
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Yes
Why Y(physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? How did you (or someone else) approach them on the issue and how did they react? My grandfather because of his health, my grandmother because she is an alcholoic
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions? No

All of her answers are EXACTLY the same answers I would give, even about my family. :tu
taraw226 11-02-2007, 03:54 PM 1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly? i am FOR driving restrictions and/or mandatory re-testing for the elderly
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions? 65
3. Why are you for/against restrictions? i have heard/read about too many accidents involving elderly drivers where they're reflexes were too slow, eyesight was poor, etc.
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Why (physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? my grandmother. she gave up her license years ago, she agreed that she shouldn't be driving (she was barely tall enough to see over the steeing wheel and her eyesight was deteriorating). it may become an issue with my grandfather soon especially because he's had some issues with loss of feeling in his toes due to chemo.
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions? no. i can understand how the elderly would feel that it was or that it was taking away their "freedom", however the restrictions/re-testing are to ensure their safety and the safety of everyone else on the road.

:agree
Donna 11-02-2007, 06:05 PM I am for the mandatory testing after a certain age and that is it. My grandmother is 77 and you wouldnt know it if you were driving behind her. :lmao
NikkiD 11-02-2007, 06:59 PM 1. Are you for/against driving restrictions on the elderly? I believe at some point regular testing should be done regarding their driving skills.
2. At what age would you personally place restrictions? That's hard to say. My grandparents are in their mid 80s and both have not had any issues driving so far. My mom on the other hand is 65 and has driven like a little old lady for the last 10 years. I think by age 70 possibly, be tested, then be individually determined how often to return for regular "check up" testing.
3. Why are you for/against restrictions? Elderly drivers can be a danger to themselves and others and their skills and abilities should be checked much more often.
4. Have you had anyone in your family who is no longer safe to drive? Why (physical (reflexes, eyesight) or mental (dementia, alzhiemers etc.) issues) ? No.
5. Do you think it is a violation of rights to place these restrictions? No, it shouldn't be considered anything different than someone who is driving impaired (except it shouldn't be a crime of course). Elderly drivers that really shouldn't be driving cause accidents, people get injured or worse. If they are a danger on the road they shouldn't be allowed to drive, just as anyone else that is deemed a danger for any other reason.
I suppose I'm for retesting for the driver's license to make sure their reflexes are quick enough, they can see well enough, etc. My grandfather is still relatively young-late 60s I suppose, but he's an AWFUL driver! I won't let my daughter in the car with him. I do see how it could make them feel helpless-we should have more things in place to help them get around if they can't pass the retest-more public transportation, buses for the elderly, etc.
