HOUSTON - The military has punished nine Marine Corps recruiters who arranged for stand-ins to take Armed Services entrance exams for new enlistees.

The cheating was made public Wednesday, though officials at the Military Entrance Processing Station in Houston noticed in April that signatures of test takers didn't match those on enlistment forms, said Capt. John Niemann, a spokesman for the recruiting district.

"I don't know why this happened here. Obviously, we do not tolerate it," Niemann said. "We learned of it. We investigated it and took appropriate disciplinary action."

The worst offender was discharged from the service while the remaining eight were reassigned and given non-judicial punishments, which could include fines and demotion.

The military would not release the names of the recruiters or say who the stand-in test-takers were.

Officials said they found 15 instances of fraud, although they weren't sure how widespread the practice was or how long it had been going on.

The cheating took place on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, a test given to prospective recruits to determine whether they're eligible for the service and what type of military jobs they're best suited for.

Officials said the recruits who didn't take their own tests faced a range of consequences, including expulsion from the service. They also had an opportunity to take the exam on their own, authoritie said.

Actually, i've heard TONS more about the army recruiters than Marines. I"ve heard very few about Marines .... though, living here in san diego and wife of a DI, it's hard not to hear anything about Marine DI's fucking up. I think it just depends on where you live.. i'm sure there's tons of crap going on in Army bases that we never hear about because it's not local to us ..... plus, the media is messed up ...lol.. The really sad thing is that the stories that actually make it to public knowledge are only the tip of the iceberg. The last four years were a real eye opener for me, to say the least.

Ok, I have to laugh:lol

If you are so dumb you need a stand in for the ASVAB...just WOW. :wow

I'm glad the recruiters were punished, and I certianly hope no casualties are caused by people who are mentally underqualified for their jobs, as certainly more instances have occured.

Just sad!

Well, maybe that could explain some of the Marines I've met :rofl

Seriously, though...it wouldn't matter which branch had the issue, I would have said the same thing. I took the ASVAB a while back and uh...you'd have to be a monkey to not do well on it.

I know what you mean. I guessed on the mechanical questions and still got a high score. That's why the whole "ASVAB waiver" thing makes me go :puzz. Then, as if that wasn't enough, now we have stand-ins? WTF?! :duh

You would think, wouldn't you? I was amazed by some of the scores that the kids here would get when testing for DH. What we realized is that the sad fact is many of the "graduates" simply cannot read and write. DH would sit down with them after the practice test to go over it and get a feel for what the problem was and they literally could NOT read the test which makes it pretty hard to pass - kwim? THAT gives me a whole lot of faith in the school system we live in:wowsers The sad thing is we let DD, then 9, take the practice test and SHE aced it.

Personally I aced it when I was in high school (including the mechanical portion which really makes me DH :puzz, lol).

Yea, I've scored off the charts on most sections on all my ASVAB practice tests... and there are some sections I just don't understand that much about at all, but still it's not that hard.

I miss the coding section though :(
