Mike and I should be moving into a house on base December of next year. When do you think we should start putting furniture on layaway while he's deployed? Any advice? What did you do?

We want to get nice furniture that will last most of our lives:yes

Right now, we literally have nothing nice between the two of us.

:thinking maybe save up the money to buy some furniture rather than layaway unless you have somewhere to put it now. I would save up all the extra money to have a nice chunk to be able to buy it outright.

That's what we thought about doing originally. Can someone explain layaway to me?:sigh I'm so stupid.

well depends on where you go.. you can do a layaway where they hold your stuff for you while you pay, when it is paid off they give you your stuff.. ( actually I have never done this with furniture so I don't know if they even do it)
The other kind is what our NEX called home layaway where they let you take it home while you are paying on it.. With furniture though I would save up and buy it all at once.. that way you have time to sit around and look at ads and what not see what you really like before buying it.

Layway is like this-say you buy $800 worth of stuff ok? You put a certain % down on the stuff & then they give you so many months(some 3, some places more) to pay it off in equal installments until it is paid off & YOURS:yes HTH sweety:hugs

I'd just start saving $$$ for the time when you guys get a place.. you don't know what sizes will best fit the place you'll be living in yet and such.

No interest on lay a way, but sometimes there is a service charge or cancellation fee.

No problem! I think we actually have too much furniture for the layout of the townhome we're in now.. but new sofas are going to have to wait a while. (I refuse to finance furniture..)

I would save up for the furniture during deployment. Half the fun of buying furniture is picking it out together, especially for your first home!!!! All our furniture right now is hand me downs and garage sale stuff I got so we would have something. We're in the process of saving up slowly and buying things piece by piece and it's more fun doing it together and coming home knowing it's ours and we don't owe anyone else for anything!! :goodluck

have fun picking it out!!!!!

Great advice! I think just about everyone starting out has done the a little from here, and a little from there stuff to make their first place feel like home. That's all part of starting out!

I'd suggest saving the money, because then you can also shop around for better deals. My next door neighbor has gone through like 4 living room suits in the year that I've known her because she goes to places like Aarons and Rent a Center. It's easier to save the money and then buy outright.

I'd probably scour craigslist for something that will hold me over until I can afford nicer things. It also gives you time to not only decide on the size of the furniture, but how you want to place it in the room, which could dictate how many and of what item you would be purchasing.

We did a kind of layaway thing....we did it for a month though so not sure how different it would be for you..but I think DH did the layaway with our mattress alot longer! He actually started putting money down on our pieces a few months before we moved in and then once it was paid off told them when to deliver it..some stuff he paid off way before and just told them what day was good for him to deliver it.

I'd wait until I had the $ saved up and buy it in full then. :)

i agree! we saved & then went on a furniture shopping spree together and we were able to buy everything, not finance. good luck.

I agree. Save money up to buy nice furniture. Just use what you have now or buy some off of your friends. It's a smarter choice financially.
