Hate crime charges sought in beating, torture of woman

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Hundreds of people gathered at West Virginia's Capitol today to urge prosecutors to add hate crime charges against six white people charged in the beating, torture and sexual assault of a 20-year-old black woman.

Authorities say the accused, three men and three women, held Megan Williams captive for days at a rural trailer — sexually assaulting her, beating her and forcing her to eat human and animal feces.

"Hate crimes are out of control in America," Malik Shabazz, a legal adviser to Williams and her family and a founder of Black Lawyers for Justice, told those gathered. "Nooses are being hung and our women are being raped by white mobs. What happened to Megan Williams was a hate crime and we want this prosecuted as a hate crime."

Shabazz staged the rally despite a request by the city's black ministerial association and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People not to gather because it could harm the prosecution's case.

Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham has not filed hate crime charges in the case saying the other charges already filed carried harsher penalties. A hate crime conviction carries up to 10 years in prison in West Virginia. All six face kidnapping and sexual assault charges. Kidnapping carries a possible life sentence.

Abraham, who urged Williams and her family not to talk about the case or attend the rally, has said it might be difficult to prove a hate crime charge because Williams had a "social relationship" with one of the suspects for at least several months before the alleged assaults.

Williams attended the rally wearing a T-shirt with the message "Protect the Black Woman."

The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault, but Williams and her mother agreed to release her name.

Joe Marchal said he drove three hours from Berea, Ky., with his wife and infant son to show his support for Williams.

"If no one came out today, imagine how that would make Megan Williams feel," said Marchal. "We're here for her."

In addition to calling attention to hate crimes, organizers hoped the rally would help raise money for Williams' medical care and future educational expenses.

Members of the Nation of Islam, the New Black Panther Party attended the rally, and the Rev. Al Sharpton also was expected to be on hand.

The rally was to end with a march from the Capitol to Charleston's federal courthouse two miles away.

Wow, that is fucked up. I cant believe they did that to that woman. :no

BUT... how come there is such a huge outrage for this woman, but nothing for this couple http://vanquishinggeorgia.blogspot.com/2007/03/controlled-media-black-out-white-couple.html The site is a little harsh on the eyes but you can google Christopher Newsom and come up with all kinds of news stories. Sorry, but Im kinda vigilant on the stupid ass "race cards" that get played.

wow..evil people...that's all i have to say..it amazes me the mentality of these people who did it..whether black or white, no one deserves it...But the reality is most people bring up the touchy subject of white beating any other race than the opposite..why? because it make good media coverage...

I support the notion that this should be charged as a hate crime. However, I take issue with this statement from her attorney:
"Hate crimes are out of control in America," Malik Shabazz, a legal adviser to Williams and her family and a founder of Black Lawyers for Justice, told those gathered. "Nooses are being hung and our women are being raped by white mobs.

I have followed this story as well. I think it is very sad I saw her on the news yesterday and they were in Charleston WV on the steps of the capitol I think... anyways her laywer is not happy because they are having the trial in the small town where it happened with a jury that will probably represent more of the criminals ie (white people from the town and not a diverse jury ) They also say she might have dated one of the men who did this to her .
I think the whole case is SICK and who cares if she knew them or not it is WRONG what happened !I hope these people go to JAIL !

they could always get the trial moved to another location. hopefully a judge will grant them that.
