Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of English Roman Catholics which planned to carry out the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I of England in order to destroy Protestant rule by killing the Protestant aristocracy, on the 5th of November 1605.
However, because of a leak the Secretary of State ordered an intense search of the vaults underneath the Houses of Parliament. And he was discovered just as he was about to set off the explosives. Fawkes was then taken into custody, and under the King’s command tortured for information. After several days of silence Fawkes finally gives the names of co conspirators (that had already come forth)
On January 31st, Fawkes and some of his co conspirators were tried and found guilty. They were to be hanged, drawn and quartered. Fawkes however, jumped off the scaffold and broke his neck. Therefore he avoided being drawn and quartered.
Since then Britons celebrate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot every November 5th as Bonfire Night. Where on many areas effigies of a "guy" are burnt.
Oddly enough, Guy Fawkes is seen as one of the 100 most influential Britons. The "Gunpowder Treason and Plot" led to more freedom for Catholics among other things (including some believe inspiring parts of MacBeth)
