Is that true? Kaymara 03-26-2006, 03:41 PM It varies. It used to be 2, then 1 then 2. But if you are going to a military Dr then it doesn't matter and you can have as many as they want. I had 2 alone within a week at Naval hospital Bremerton. The "rules" only apply if tricare actually pays a civilian Dr. Now...Most Dr's do 1 or 2 ultrasounds on the normal. Some practices do an early 1 and a 20 week one and some practices only do a 20 week one. I had so many because of my infertility and previous miscarriage. I would count on only 1 ultrasound. Your 20 week one and if you get one sooner then that'll make it all the better. Brandi 03-26-2006, 03:43 PM I think so. At the military hospital that I went to with Jaxon, they only did one ultrasound at around 20 weeks unless something was wrong with the baby. Here, even at the civi doctor, they only do one u/s unless they determine something is wrong. If you have a history to be concerned about, if they can't find a heartbeat after 10-12 weeks, if you are having bleeding or something like that, they will do one and pay for it though. I had one done a few days ago because of my history. I'm on progoil and it can make your body hold on to a pregnancy even if it's not viable and with us not hearing the heartbeat the other day, she wanted to make sure that the baby was okay. I just wasn't far enough along to hear the heartbeat. I do think it varies from doctor to doctor but that's been the general rule where I've been seen. RockstarMom 03-26-2006, 03:43 PM It should be 2. One early one for dating and then your BIG u/s which is between 18-22 wks. ;) Don't worry if they don't do the early one. I had no idea they were doing an early one with this pg and I got one. I have my BIG u/s tomorrow morning. piggypunkinetta 03-26-2006, 04:19 PM At military hospital's is doesn't matter, I had a few with the boys. I only got one with dd since I had a normal pregnancy and it was blue cross. With my last one since I went home we ended up having to pay for my last ultrasound done at 38 weeks. Not sure if it was because the place I went to wasn't covered, although the hospital was, or because I had already had my main ultrasound at the naval hospital here. HTH piggypunkinetta 03-26-2006, 04:20 PM Don't worry if they don't do the early one. I had no idea they were doing an early one with this pg and I got one. I have my BIG u/s tomorrow morning. How exciting!!!!!! Kym 03-26-2006, 04:27 PM I had one for every visit I had and that was ALOT mara_jade81 03-26-2006, 04:50 PM i only had one with hayden at 20 weeks. they usually only do one for dating if you're not sure when you got pregnant. with madison i ended up having 4 ultrasounds because of different things. airyn1 03-26-2006, 04:57 PM I had 2 with this one before the whole "preeclampsia" scare. I knew exactly when I got pregnant and they still gave me the first trimester and second trimester ultrasounds. Now since the scare I've had 3 already and I'll have another one on Wednesday and then another on Saturday with the amnio. jennyb 03-26-2006, 09:34 PM I had one every month for the first 4 months than every 2 weeks for the rest of my pregnancy with Blake but only had 3 with Jeremy one at 8 weeks 1 at 21 weeks and one the night before I delivered MichelleB 03-27-2006, 12:20 AM From my experience, and what I've seen and heard you only get 1 maybe 2. If you are considered high risk, or if something is wrong then you will get them more frequently. If you have a civilian doctor, you'll probably get more than one. I had two, one when I first found out I was pregnant because I wasn't using Tricare yet, so I was with my civilian doctor still. Then one at 20 weeks at the Naval hospital. Jodi 03-27-2006, 04:52 AM I had two. One was at 13 weeks and the other was around 22 weeks. Becca 03-27-2006, 05:34 AM It looks like it varies ;) I had one, but then I ended up with pre-e and they gave me another one to make sure everything was ok. AG2Wife 03-27-2006, 09:44 AM Tricare only pays for ultrasounds that are medically necessary. As you can see on my sig, I've had many, and I'll have atleast 2-4 more. All were deemed necessary. Here's exactly what it says on HNFS: https://www.hnfs.net/bene/benefits/TRICARE+Maternity+Care.htm TRICARE does not cover: Routine ultrasounds are not covered. If a provider or beneficiary wishes to perform a routine ultrasound, it will not be covered or reimbursed in addition to or separately from the global maternity fee. Beneficiaries can choose to pay for a routine ultrasound separately from their TRICARE benefits if they complete a Request for Non-Covered Services Form prior to the service being rendered. COVERED: An ultrasound, as medically necessary, is covered within the maternity care global fee. Determining gender is not considered medically necessary. The ultrasound can be used for evaluation such as estimating gestational age, evaluating fetal growth, biophysical evaluation for fetal well being, and evaluation of fetal condition in late registrants for prenatal care. Maternity ultrasound is covered outside of the global fee only with diagnosis and management of conditions that constitute a high-risk pregnancy.
