Veronica 11-05-2007, 10:44 PM sounds like a bunch of crybabies to me. they make $70,000 starting. Thats plenty to me. Oh, but COL in NY and LA is too expensive. :( aww poor them. :rolleyes
Cheeky Monkey 11-05-2007, 11:14 PM well when you think about the stars making millions off of their words... idk i'd want more money too

I agree :yes the writers are the heart of the shows. Buuut there will be plenty of time for them to catch up on their writing :giggle so im not too worried. Shows are filmed waaaay ahead of time, all will be well in a few weeks im sure :yes
Kelsey 11-05-2007, 11:20 PM Yeah I'm sad about this too. If it keeps going for a long time, they might not even have LOST this season :oogle :madwife
Aundi 11-05-2007, 11:22 PM I heard that reruns won't start until around January. Maybe that means that they have written up until that point. I hope by then they have something worked out:(
Nickschic 11-05-2007, 11:31 PM The artical said that many studios had stockpiles of scripts till atleast the benging of the year. So it maybe ok. It could be over before they run out of them. I hope.
Shep's Wife 11-05-2007, 11:32 PM well that sucks, I hope they figure something out soon!
SoldiersWife 11-05-2007, 11:33 PM Yeah I'm sad about this too. If it keeps going for a long time, they might not even have LOST this season :oogle :madwife
What would I do without LOST? I would :tantrum
Green~Mammy 11-06-2007, 02:11 PM I think they have the right to be paid for their words. Stars make major bank as do networks all because of the words they work hard to put together in the form of a script. Not to mention rewrites, & various other changes.
Becca 11-06-2007, 02:21 PM I heard them say on the radio yesterday that the last writers strike was in the eighties and lasted over 6 months. That makes sense though, it would take that long (into a new season) to feel the impact of the loss.
Does anyone know the bottom line issues? I know it has something to do with royalties from rentals and DVD sales, but that's all I know :dunno They interviewed one of the writers and he insinuated that they got NOTHING as far as royalties for DVD's - but I find that hard to believe. If that's the case, I don't blame them for walking.
MIKOSWIFEY 11-06-2007, 02:24 PM Everyone in the entertainment business has such a money hungry attitude... it's sick. Oh well, not too bad because they'll settle it quick. The networks will totally pay.
2Princesses 11-06-2007, 02:32 PM a story-editor position make at least a low six-figure salary, with a "written by" credit on an hourlong script paying an additional $30,000 plus residuals.
:onsoapbox
Are you kidding Me Tell them all to suck it up. I hate how people like that and sports players think they deserve so much money and all that when in all honesty they make more then the average "joe". Grow up folks!!!!!:vent
ok I'm done :offtobed

Not sure how much of this is true and how much is rumor, but here is all I've heard from DH and the "news" (entertainment news :lol)
Basically they aren't getting any compensation for the videos being posted online for free (think youtube or other free video sites), or in DVD sales (not getting enough/or any royalties - which is BS if that's true).
Also, more and more writers are out of jobs due to the overwhelming popularity of "reality shows." While indeed "reality shows" use writers, it's not nearly as many as a normal show, and many writers don't want to stoop to the level of reality tv in order to make a living (I don't blame them--there's not much creative room in that...)
The writers do make more than the average American, but compared to the rest of the staff (actors, directors, producers, editors, TV network) they make CRAP for pay. While I don't think that ANY of those people should get paid as much as they do, if it's a matter of comparison, it really is not fair to the writers to get shafted so much when the actors wouldn't have anything to act, the producers wouldn't have material to produce, etc.without writers.
ETA: Ironically enough, as more and more shows run out of their script banks (if the writers continue to strike for a long period of time) they will fill those time slots with reality shows which don't require as many or any writers.
RonniesWifeJen 11-06-2007, 08:38 PM My brother is in the movie industry. I can attest that writers make almost nothing for what they do. $70,000 may be nice somewhere else in the US but when the low end 3 bedroom home costs over half a million dollars you have to make more than that. And half a million is low balling it, you aren't in a great neighborhood then. I mean, would you really want to be struggling when you where one of the writers for a hit like Friends? When the actors make millions per season, movie, and sometimes show, you'd be pissed to not even cut into the $100 thousand range for the year. I would be fighting for more rights, credit, and money too. I'd want a bigger piece of that pie. I don't feel that their demands are unreasonable at all.
