Pregnant woman run over, killed in female gangs brawl

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — A pregnant woman was killed and two others injured when a woman rammed her car into them during a planned street fight involving as many as 30 young women, authorities said.

The driver of the car, Unique Bishop, 21, fled after Monday afternoon's fight but later turned herself in to authorities and was booked for investigation of murder, police said. She was being held on $1 million bail.

"It was totally an intentional act to kill the woman. It was the driver's way of settling the dispute. It was a horrific act," said LAPD Deputy Chief Charlie Beck.

It was not immediately known if Bishop had obtained an attorney.

Police said the cause of the dispute is unclear, but was part of a planned confrontation between two groups of women in their early 20s. Witnesses told police they saw women shouting at each other and fighting at a discount store parking lot. The fight then moved onto the street and into a gas station.

Dozens gathered at the gas station and watched as Bishop got into her car and drove it into the group. One of the victims was pinned against another car, police said.

The woman killed was eight months pregnant and another victim was in critical condition and expected to lose her leg, authorities said. None of the victims' identities were released.

"We have seen women around gangs before, but we haven't seen anything like this event before," said police Cmdr. Pat Gannon.

IMO she should.

I don't think she should get the death penalty.

These women knowingly put themselves in danger. They know that gangs only lead to trouble- and can end up killing or being killed. But they do it anyway because it's their "turf", and their "friends".

My question is- why would a pregnant woman be in a gang- and why why why would she go to a street fight?

IMO- she knew what *could* happen. And just like the woman that killed her, she went anyway.

So no- death penalty isn't just. I know my post may sound terrible, and I'm not disputing the fact that the crime is heinous- but these women are in gangs. These woman know what can happen. And they know it's not just a game.

Plus I'm not at all for the death penalty. 2 wrongs do not make a right.

there is a lot of gang psychology being studied now and i will try and find some for you simmy since it is pretty interesting to read. it basically says that there is something lacking at home and the gang provides that family structure. she probably got preggo while already in the gang.

i'm not addressing the death penalty part since that's a whole other can of worms

I'm not trying to insinuate she should get the death penalty.

BUT if that was a man that hit and killed a preggo woman I am sure he would get the death penalty for it :yes

Well this entire thing opens up a can of worms.

1. She probably got pregnant whilst in the gang.

I agree with that. It's the only logical explanation.

So why did she go?! Most likely because she knew that if she didn't- she'd be in shit with her gang members and she felt the pressure. So she went, knowing what could happen if things got ugly. Well it was a street fight- things were bound to get ugly.

So lets move on to the woman behind the wheel-

She *may* not have wanted to kill the pregnant woman at all. But perhaps, just like the pregnant woman- she felt like she had to, if she wanted to make it Christmas. So she did it because she was trying to save herself from her gang members.

There - is the problem. 2 woman, both in gangs, both being forced into doing things.

They are just as guilty as the other if that's the case. Both went in to the fight knowing they could kill- that says premeditated to me. On both accounts.

And then the woman turns herself in- if she wanted this woman dead- she would be stoked and run off and hide just like everyone usually does. Rarely do people turn themselves in if they killed a person, and rarely do they do it if they know they could get the death penalty.

IMO- this is just 100% another gang story- only this time it involved a pregnant gang member.

It's sad that this happens. These women have so much promise and yet they don't believe they do, so they join a gang. That's sad IMO.

oh i agree simmy it is very sad. if they hadn't gone they would've been killed or hazed by their own gang so they probably thought they would be safer by going. :dunno i don't think anyone can really know why or what was going through their minds

Absolutely.

But this is a gang thing.

If this woman killed an innocent pregnant bystander intentionally- I'd be saying the complete opposite.

I'd say just trying to look out for themselves.

Gangs are like crack- easy to get into, hard to get out of. Alot of the times, only way out is death.

that is my point simmy they probably felt like the beating they would've gotten at the fight would've been less then by their own gang. i think gangs are horrible

Yes but if he wasn't in a gang, that would be different. If he was in a gang, than heck yeah- death penalty!

I agree w/ what Simmy wrote originally....except I'm for the death penalty.

I just don't know what people think sometimes! This whole ordeal is silly and horrible.....why do adults act more like children nowadays? Why aren't we as parents teaching our kids basic morals and values? Is it be/c we don't know them ourselves? I just don't understand it at all....
