Someone tell me how this makes any sense? Is it because they know they will get what they want because the public will demand it?

Is it because they know they will get what they want because the public will demand it? leftover 11-06-2007, 10:28 PM Because Desperate Housewives will stop after the 10th episode this season... I'm slightly irate about that.. I can understand a coal mine having a union, or an oil rigging company.. for safety reasons. But to have a union for pencil pushers seems greedy to me.... Aurora 11-06-2007, 10:46 PM :dunno I heard that their contracts expired last month and now that want news one that include them getting profits from things like internet stuff. It seems fair to me. They obviously contribute a lot or people wouldn't be so upset about the whole thing. Green~Mammy 11-06-2007, 11:14 PM They are not just pencil pushers without them the stars would be worthless and the networks could not bring in mad amounts of moola. If you love Lost, House, Desperate Housewives, or any other show thank a writer. They did the hard work, coming up with the ideas that get people hooked, rewriting when things are not working or a hard to please star has a hissy fit. They also work long hours, with very little thanks from everyone involved. Why do the people that create the show not deserve to have a union or the protection of a contract? Same goes for movies obviously what do you have with out the writers a whole lot of people standing around with their thumbs up their tushies. Wicked 11-07-2007, 12:45 AM It seems stupid to me that multi-billion dollar entertainment companies are refusing to give the writers who actually create the shows that are making them those billions any profits from their own work appearing on the internet. Weren't these same entertainment companies just suing You Tube for putting their shows on their site and not paying them? Germanchick 11-07-2007, 01:26 AM Their last contract was from 1988. The days of VHS and before DVDs and the internet. Writers are hardly getting anything from the sale of DVDs and if I remember correctky nothing so far from movie sales online. IMO it is completely justified for them to strike. Last time they did it cost the entertainment industry $500 million for the 22 weeks they were on strike. http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/11/05/hollywood.labor.ap.ap/index.html LaneyBug 11-07-2007, 06:56 AM Well, then, how hard is it to just give them what they want? Why does it have to come to this... MIKOSWIFEY 11-07-2007, 07:06 AM Someone tell me how this makes any sense? Is it because they know they will get what they want because the public will demand it? That is what a strike IS... MIKOSWIFEY 11-07-2007, 07:07 AM Well, then, how hard is it to just give them what they want? Why does it have to come to this... The price of seeing a movie will go up, the price of advertisements for products on tv during will go up, the price of DVDs and other stuff will go up. Not that they weren't going up anyway, but they will go up significantly more now. Yay. Erika 11-07-2007, 07:10 AM Completely justified. :yes I'm still sad about it, the writers aren't asking for anything outlandish and now our shows are going to have to end early because of greediness. :no LaneyBug 11-07-2007, 07:17 AM That is what a strike IS... I'm sorry, was that meant to be condescending? Just checking, hard to tell in a post. MIKOSWIFEY 11-07-2007, 07:20 AM LOL no I thought you seriously didn't understand the point of a strike. :) LaneyBug 11-07-2007, 07:22 AM LOL no I thought you seriously didn't understand the point of a strike. :) Thanks for clarifying, I just didn't understand the point of this particular strike. I'm too lazy to read all the coverage, so I would rather have the opinion of the ladies on here to gather info from both sides.;) Green~Mammy 11-07-2007, 02:33 PM The price of seeing a movie will go up, the price of advertisements for products on tv during will go up, the price of DVDs and other stuff will go up. Not that they weren't going up anyway, but they will go up significantly more now. Yay. However the price hikes are not/will not be the writers fault. They are entitled to fair pay & royalties for their work everyone else is making mad bank because of what THEY do. Blame the greedy corporations for the price hikes that will follow not the people that write the shows and films we grow to love. That ironically enough happen to be among the people that are not paid well in the industry. |
