View Full Version : Puppy nightmares?
Kt-did 11-13-2007, 11:38 PM Okay... so I've owned several dogs in my lifetime.... total of 9.
My hunny has owned at least TWICE as many.....
Yet neither of us has EVER had a dog that has puppy nightmares like Traveler, our lab/pit mix. EVERY NIGHT (almost....) he has nightmares. And not more than one usually either! We can be watching TV on the couch and he'll fall asleep and start twitching his mouth, eyes, feet and whimpering and 'moofing' as I call it.... not quite woofing. The other night, he BARKED in his sleep! I know he was asleep because I could hear him twitching next to me on his bed and it was followed by some light growling and whimpering. Whenever I call out his name though, he'll wake right up. You can jostle him and whisper at him, but he won't wake up till you call his name. We don't get it.
Does anyone else have, or ever had a dog, that has frequent nightmares????
Nearly 30 dogs between us and NEVER have we encountered something like this.... Trying to figure out if I should push it with the Vet or not.
Thanks!
Kiser'sBabe 11-13-2007, 11:48 PM Every dog I have ever had does it. It's a normal dog thing. I just tell my DH that they're chasing rabits in there dreams.
IWwife 11-13-2007, 11:57 PM My female great dane has them every night.. she even moves her legs like she is running :dunno,, my male dane has them far and few between... When Jade gets bad I wake her up :), she falls right back asleep and usually that stops the dreams... I have to say it is cute when they just sit there and barely ruff, but when she actully BARKS... wow it will wake you up from a dead sleep.
Good Luck...
VinnysGirl 11-14-2007, 12:03 AM My dogs both do it.. Maycie moreso than Sophie, but Sophie is a year and a half now. I think it's normal!! He'll probably grow out of it!!!
SoldiersWife 11-14-2007, 12:06 AM My dog has them sometimes.
KatReborn 11-14-2007, 02:09 AM My terrier Apollo has them all the time. Apollo moves his legs and crys and sometimes if its really bad it will wake him up and he will spend like 5 minutes barking at the wall i think to make himself feel better. My pit/lab has them too but he just kind wimpers in his sleep.
crewchiefwife 11-14-2007, 02:55 AM its normal its just puppy dreams
Karin 11-14-2007, 07:20 AM Same here, my AmStaff did this more or less everytime she fell asleep. Its normal even with older dogs :)

I don't think that's totally normal. But, not a bad thing.
I had 3 dogs growing up and the one use to dream all the time they were 'running'. All four would go in their sleep and they'd bark. we'd giggle it was funny. They did it when they were little and as they grew up wayyyy less. But as an adult, periodically they would.
put a nightlight on, maybe they are scared. you seriously never know?!
Laurie119 11-14-2007, 11:40 AM All of our dogs have had them to some extent. Let me tell you a couple of stories.....LMAO.
Woody was laying on the floor sleeping, and running and yipping in his sleep. All of a sudden, he started barking, hopped up and ran around the coffee table twice. He then looked around like "Did anyone see that?" and went and laid down and went back to sleep.
I was laying on the loveseat with my feet up on the arm, and Chloe got up, layed by my butt and put her head between my legs (on my hooha) , get the picture? Anyway, I fell asleep, and she started twitching and yipping in her sleep and I woke up yelling "Get this fucking dog off of me!". Anyway, it was funny because hubby was falling out of his chair he was laughing so hard, and the kids were trying to figure out why I got so mad......LOL.
harrisonsdream 11-14-2007, 11:43 AM cosby does it
Kristen 11-14-2007, 11:47 AM Both of my lab mixes dream a lot. Every once in a while, it seems to me like it might be a nightmare, but I could be reading it wrong.
I wouldn't worry too much. I have found though, that the more worn out from playing they are, the less it happens.

Oooohhhhh... now THAT is an idea!!! Thanks!
Thank you all too... I figured 'sometimes' was normal, but a few times a night (only God knows how often he does this when we are at work!) just seemed frightening to me.... I'm happy to read that so many of you have dogs that have them rather often. I feel better now.
Oh, and whomever it was that mentioned a night light, well, he falls asleep on the couch with us while we are watching TV or a movie, so I can't imagine he'd be scared.... lots of light and sound and us talking too.... But it was worht a shot. He does seem to calm down in his sleep if one of us touches him... he doesn't wake up, but the 'moofing' subsides though he still twitches a bit..... Could be an odd form of separation anxiety??? I'll take the nightmares over a wailing dog while we're at work ANY DAY!
bain5511 11-14-2007, 10:36 PM My dog does it, but I think she is usually dreaming about rabbits or squirrels. She makes this yipping noise and her paws will start moving while her breathing increases. At first I thought she was having a seizure until one day I watched her chase a rabbit. She made the same yipping noise she makes her in sleep. She's a nut!
Ashnbri 11-14-2007, 10:44 PM our bella does it...if it gets too bad then I wake her up and tell her it is okay.
