I'm scared we have a fence jumper :freakout As I am getting out of the shower, I can see something moving in our backyard through a crack in our window in our room. I go peek through thinking holy shit someone is in our backyard, and it's YOGI jumping almost higher than our 5ft+ fence :nutts We have one of those big wooden privacy type fences and his head was coming up past where the fence top is. He was just jumping up and down in one spot, I think looking for the dog in the next yard that was barking. I am worried now though b/c he's only 4 months old and if he can jump that high, I'm worried he will be able to completely clear it soon. Crap :blech I don't know if I should be worried but he looked like he may have tried to jump over if I had not caught him, so I am worried now. I don't know if I should invest in a dog run or kennel with higher walls or something. I don't think I've ever seen a lab jump like that though :ohno

Is it normal for dogs to jump like that even if they are not planning on actually jumping over the fence? He really reminded me of one of those jack russells or beagles or something.

Oh crap... I have no idea what to tell you.. We had a Brittany when I was a kid that was given to us because he constantly jumped the guy's fence to run. He was in heaven on our fenced in 3 acres..

Was he trying to get to the other dog? Or do you think he wanted to get out and explore?? Maybe taking him on a walk might help.

You could always put a line of Hot Wire along the top of the fence if you are worried about him jumping over. BUt I think is you just tell him no and maybe spray him with the water bottle he'll get the idea thats it's a no no.

To be honest, I'm not really sure why he was jumping... I don't know if he was just trying to see the other dog or if he had plans to actually jump over. As soon as I saw him, I ran outside in my bath towel and probably looked like a crazy person. He has started barking quite a bit at that dog in the next fence, so I don't know if they are friends or enemies or maybe she is a girl or who knows :lol but he is very interested in this dog... they have started running along the fences with each other and barking constantly at each other and now the jumping. The barking gets so bad, I have to bring him in b/c they will go back and forth for hours if I let him. I guess I will just monitor him more while out there and then I'll buy that wire for the top if it seems like an issue. Gosh, I really hope he doesn't start jumping like that though, he is way too big to be jumping fences that big :lol

Dogs jump to see what is on the other side, for instance he might have smelled something and wanted to investigate. I have known dogs that just jump up and down but not over. However labs do jump pretty high and I have seen some clear a 6 ft fence easily. Telling him no or squirting him with water when he does it should help curb his jumping

we have a BIG lab mix im talking sausage puppy lol hes so big and hes constantly jumping over the kennel fence which is slightly taller then me and im five eight... but he also digs under the fence and rips it up any chance he gets oh and chews through the wires...mind you he lives in the country and has a fenced in half acre and walks twice a day i dont know what his deal is...same dog who jumped out of his kennel at our old ranch (he had a dog house now he has an igloo so its harder for him to jump off of it) got out while we werent home got his foot stuck in a fence trying to get at the sheep and chewed off two of his own toes because he was stuck in the fence.... lol sorry im rambling but the point of the story was our dog gets bored and jumps over the fence for fun...i would try and get something with a higher fence

Sophie jumps, but has never jumped OVER the fence. We have 5 ft fences and she could EASILY clear it if she wanted to get out. She never has though!! She likes to look out and if someone walks up she wants to be able to see them and have them pet her.

Try the wire fence at the top or every time you catch him doing that just scold him. He's a smart dog and would probably get it after a few scoldings!!! :goodluck It's nerve-wrecking as hell when you see your dog could jump the fence.. you always wonder what if... right! LOL!!

My moms border collie can jump incredibly high but she has never jumped out of their regular chain link fenced yard. She is a 10 year old dog so I'm sure by now she would have gotten out if she could have. I would just keep an eye out and see how it goes.

Plus as he gets older, his weight alone will tone down his jump height:hehe

:whew well I'm at least glad to hear that jumping up and down doesn't mean he will definitely jump over. I swear I've never seen a lab jump like that though :lol He's a big hefty guy so I'm surprised he could even get that high but he was getting some serious height, for sure :nutts I plan to keep an eye on him, I just hope he doesn't ever actually try to jump over :paranoid
