View Full Version : Intolerance?

Okay, so we went to a Thanksgiving lunch at my husband's squadron today. We were standing in line waiting for our food. There was some country music on and my kids were dancing. Standing behind us were a couple of African American ladies and their kiddos. Well, one of the kids started dancing, and one of the moms grabbed her and said, "no, we don't dance to that music." I was a little surprised (not offended, per se, but surprised) that she would say it. I felt it came across as rude since my kids were dancing to it. My question is: is that teaching your kids to be intolerant? I mean, it is just music, but does it symbolize more? What do you think?
And, just to add, I don't have my panties in a wad, it just made me curious. ;)

Yeah, I do think it teaches your kids to be intolerant when you forbid them from participating in things just because you don't like them. Sometimes intolerance is okay, like when you forbid your kids from killing people, and teach them that being a murderer is bad. But sometimes it is damaging to kids because it teaches them anyone who does certain things is BAD, even if that thing doesn't hurt anyone else. In essence, that mom was teaching her kids that country music is the sign of something bad or unacceptable, and they could easily grow up thinking that anyone who listens to it is a bad person. That kind of intolerance is... intolerable. LOL.

That's right, I am intolerant against intolerance. :giggle

i think her scolding her kids for dancing to country music is just like telling you kids that God hates people who don't believe Him. There are some things that are good to be intolerant to, especially if you don't think they are right. But that is the "hate the sin, love the sinner" kinda thing. But being intolerant to cultural issues, especially things from your NATURAL birthed country is just dumb.

Yes I do think it's teaching intolerance. How many people do you know that have the, well I grew up around it, excuse when it comes to discrimination and racism??

I know, until I developed my own way of thinking, that my childhood and the way I was influenced by those that were around me really affected the way I thought of other people and races. It's very sad, but it's the truth!

if it were that... she wouldnt have said 'THAT' music.
i think it is teaching intolerance. i know country has a bad name because its 'hicks' and 'rednecks' so my guess is THAT is what she meant by THAT music.

i think its sad that those children are being told that country music isnt ok.

Hmmm... to that music... maybe songs about having fun, loving, living and nothing exceptionally negative are offensive to her... maybe she prefers her kids to dance around to "music" that talks about bitches and hoes and killing and gangsta's and all that happy horseshit... to each their own, but no parent should discourage their child from simply being a child... my parents rarely agreed with my choice in music... and I have issues with some of the music that my children like... but I don't discourage them from enjoying it... I have limits as to what I will accept but other than that as long as I don't have to hear it I really don't care... I'm not sure if that lady that you are referring to was being intolerant or possibly ignorant...maybe even stupid... the list goes on

How dare someone imprint crap like that on a child. She would have freaked out had it been rap, and you told your kids to not dance to that music.

Even though, I have to say, I roll my eyes when I see women singing that soulja boy song. "Superman the hoe" means to come on her back when she is sleeping so that the sheets stick to her. Very fucking manly "soulja boy"

Gotta say, rap, and country, the two kinds of music that make me want to run around smacking the shit out of people.

But hey, if my kids want to listen to that crap one day, I'll get them an ipod and they can dance around all weird in their rooms.

No offense, but the comment wasn't made for you to like or not like. It was me stating a possibility, hence the use of the word "maybe." The woman obviously found something offensive about her child/children dancing to country music. I personally cannot stand the majority of rap music so that is the example that I used. I would have used the same example had the woman in question been white, green or pink with purple polka dots.

And I have absolutely no idea what "kwim" means...sorry.

I know a couple people who don't allow country in their home. It's their choice. They don't like it. They feel that country is supporting the "south" etc. Yes they are generalizing just like people generalize about rap music. I don't listen to rap and personally can't stand it but to say that just because a "black" family chooses not to listen nor promote country music is different then a "white" family choosing not to listen nor promote rap, :shrug I don't know. Thats not what I said or meant. The LITERAL LYRICS are what matters. The majority of rap music is violent and crude.... I dont hear anything in country music that is brainwashing children into supporting the south....thats just politics.

Lyrics are all a matter of interpretation to some. Yes Rap is crude and vulgar but so can country. Now I LOVE Brad Paisley but his Ticks song is about wanting to take a girl out to the pasture and get her naked. He just choose better words then the rap community. Do I agree with rap, the lyrics nope.

But to say that someone is promoting intolerance by not allowing their children to listen to a certain type of music is a personal choice. Just like it can be reversed onto you as promoting intolerance by not promoting rap.

Just something to think about.

That is all I am saying. Why did it have to be an issue about what kind of music it was. They were playing everything, well, everything family appropriate, and I just don't understand why we have to discriminate against something just because it is supposedly a "white" thing. If there was an inappropriate song on I would have just asked someone to change the song, not punished my child for my intolerance. JMO.

First off you don't have to be soo damn crude when debating.

Secondly, I too hang out with a lot of guys. I am one out of 2 girls that works with 15 men. I can honestly say that my whole life I have never heard of a 'superman' or anything of that nature. Yes I have heard some funky stuff that has made me do double takes but in the end what is the difference between men who talk like this open and freely around whoever vs. people who make a living :shrug

You know, most of the responses here have been about music we choose to let our kids listen to. But we're forgetting that this was in a public place at an event where foul language in lyrics would not have been allowed.

So, they're listening to the music anyway, the issue was with her preventing them from dancing. That's just an expression of enjoyment. I really don't see why anyone would prevent their child from dancing to any song under these circumstances. JMO though.

WHOA. I was just stating it how it was. I never grew up with nicknames for the genitalia such as wee wee and such, so I am not meaning to be crude, I am being factual.

And there was someone else who posted a link that defines the superman, and it defines it just how I have. It's a part of popular culture, just maybe not a part of popular culture you have come into contact with.

Lastly, I wasn't debating with you. You asked a question, and I answered honestly. Yeesh.

I don't have kids but I know how my grandparents tried to influence my parents to raise us. I do think it teaches you to be intolerant to other cultures/relgion. I think this is how racism/sexism/etc. get taught to children. It's the little things they learn and see from people that make them grow up the way they do. Someday I'd hope that my future children will be very accepting of everybodies culture/religion. The world would just be a much friendlier place if nothing else

Hmm...I think a lot of post in this thread were just as bad as what that lady did. Maybe it was making a statement about her views but she wasn't imposing them on anyone but her children. I'm not saying what she did/said was ok or acceptable - simply that she had the right to do it and she wasn't being overtly rude or terrible to people around her. I'm sure most of us are guilty of transmitting our stereotypes onto children, even if we don't know it.

I say let the babies dance if they want to though. And for the record - I'm obviously against intolerance.
