Then you're a step ahead of us! :hehe All I know is that we want to be close to the base, and we may want a place that allows dogs, but we aren't sure if we're going to wait to get the dog or not...:dunno I think if we don't limit it to a place that allows dogs, especially the kinds that we want, then we wouldn't be so limited on apartments.

well, our place allows dogs...DF used to have a few at his apartment as a matter of fact...but i would definitely recommend not living in oceanside unless you want to be surrounded by marines 24/7...me, i just like be with mine! :)

How far are you gonna be from base? We'd like to be within 10 miles/minutes, just so he has less of a commute (and I don't have to get up as early to kick his ass out of bed :giggle). Do you know if the place has a restriction on dog breeds? I've found that a lot of places I've looked at that allow dogs, only allow some dogs. As for being surrounded by Marines... Like you, I also prefer mine ;)

we are about 15 minutes from the start of base, but about 25-30 minutes from where DF actually works on base since that thing is so damn huge...vista is the town...DF had a black lab, so a pretty big dog...we probably won't get another one when he gets back, though :(

good luck with your search!

I think you'll probably be there a few months before me, at least, I'll let you know what we end up doing as far as the apartment thing goes! When he was on leave before he left, we were still going back and forth with everything, about the dog, etc. The basic plan stayed the same though, me moving there, us getting an apartment. So, since you seem to be sad about not getting another dog when he gets back this time, if we do get a dog instead of waiting (we'd wait till he went back to school, that way he'd have more time to train him, etc, before he went back in as an officer, but I don't know if I wanna wait :blush)... anyway, getting sidetracked, IF we don't wait to get a dog, you can come play with our puppy, since you probably wont be getting one ;)

Really, I can't accurately go by the miles/minutes thing for how far we'd like to be, since that's what he says, but I know it wouldn't take him that long to get there, since he would be taking his bike. He gave me a list of areas that would probably be ok....if only I could remember them :duh

Ok, so it's settled, DB and I will be getting a puppy! You and I can just gang up on him and make him to get me a puppy! :giggle

He was actually IN college when we first met and became friends! So he only has to go back and finish up, he only has about 1 year left, unless all his credits didn't transfer, which is why we've talked about him going back to the same school, then we wouldn't have to worry about all of that.

He told me while he was on leave that he was thinking about maybe going back to the college he went to, instead of the ones we've talked about, so if he did that, it would be easier, wouldn't have anything to worry about, as far as things transferring, so it probably wouldn't take as long. He's also talked about extending 6months or 1 year before going back to school... I really have no clue what's going on, things get so busy around and during deployments that he thinks he tells me things, then is surprised that I don't know what the heck he's talking about. He's a lot like my brother and dad (aside from the military thing, they aren't in the military), and they both also do that, so I'm used to it by now lol. If he did go back to his original school, that means we'd go to NC, then he'd go to OCS, then we'd go... noooo one knowssss :giggle.

I'm off to Boston for a few hours, I'll be back later tonight ;) Can't waaaait for 6 hours in a car! Woohoo! Or, ya know... not.

unchained...finding apartments around base for bigger dogs is almost impossible. And their breed restrictions have about 25 on them. I recommend getting a tiny dog and then you will be fine. We have a pitbull and I am having to look 6 months in advance to try and find somewhere to live. Not to mention that alot of places that accept larger dogs have a weight limit that is like 65lbs and the rent is higher...like $1,200 a month for a one bedroom.

Lacy I would love to know where you guys are at where you can have a big dog like that and see if there is a breed restriction (-8

you can always find a house to rent though. They have some cute ones but you have to look really hard for them

The drive isn't actually too bad, I can make it in about 2 hr 30-40 min, depending on traffic and where in Boston I'm going, but doing round trip with not much time in between can be a pain. I'm most likely doing it again on Friday, too... My brother BETTER realize he pretty much has the best sister ever. I could make him take the bus or the train, but no. I didn't end up leaving here until about an hour and a half after I said I was heading out. I got caught up at work, they wouldn't let me leave. I was getting so annoyed that when one guy called over to me at my desk on the intercom, I just hung up on him :dunno Then I felt bad and told him sorry, I just didn't wanna get stuck in traffic more than I knew I was gonna :sigh. He's actually one of the ones I like lol. Anyway, I made it to Boston safely, got Thai for dinner, watched part of a movie while we watched for dinner and my brother got his stuff together, ate real quick, then headed home. The trip home didn't take too long, since traffic had quieted down. I didn't even make my sister or my brother split the driving with me! (Granted my brothers driving sometimes scares me when we're in Boston, and my sister doesn't always like to drive cause she had an accident [she was hit] and broke her neck in 3 places, so I usually drive when we're together... but I'm still an awesome sister :hehe) And now... I'm not tired and it's 1:30am here:sigh

Man, I feel like such a retard, I had a whole reply typed up to you.... then accidentally closed the tab for here in my browser! I didn't even realize it at first :duh:duh:duh

I know what you mean about it being harder though, I've been looking as much as I could online, since I'm in NY, but it isn't exactly easy to look for a place to live when you're on the opposite coast! And of course one of the dogs we've talked about getting (the preferred one) is on pretty much every breed restriction, and when they don't have one, it'll be too big, since it's a German Shepherd. We've also been talking about getting an English Bulldog, which he really likes, he grew up having that or a shepherd, but I don't love them as much as he does lol. But whatever, most places would probably be more willing to be ok with that, plus they're sorta better suited for apartment living. We may have to hold off on our shepherd, which is also why we might hold off on the dog in general. We'll see, I guess.

I'd be interesting in knowing about any places that were reasonable distance to base and allowed bigger dogs, too. (or any dogs? lol) I haven't really thought too much about a house, I don't know that I would even know where to start looking (not just location wise, but for listings of rentals, too). No matter what, I'd like to have an extra bedroom because between the two of us, our immediate family alone (siblings and parents ONLY, no sister/brother-in-laws or grandparents/cousins/aunts/uncles, etc), we have 12 people that would be coming to visit, our 4 parents and our combined 8 brothers and sisters, and all of them are on the east coast. I wouldn't always wanna be sticking them on the couch or in a hotel or something.

how would you find out if there is a breed restriction? there was a housing manager on site, so he obviously knew they had a black lab there...is the breed restriction a city thing? :confuzzle

Usually they have something on their website, assuming they have one, that says something about a breed restriction. I don't think it's a city thing, I think it's just individual apartment complexes that single out certain breeds that they think are "dangerous" (which some can be, in the wrong hands, and when not trained/treated properly), destructive, etc.

i gotcha...i don't really know who owns the property...DF had the apartment before we were together, and i'm not really willing to give up my new addy, but i might be on the search too depending on where i get a job...

hope you ladies can both find a place for your puppies! vista is where it is, and it's a good location between base and SD, so maybe check around there and see what you find! ;)

I think the sites are usually by the complex name, not owner, but I'm not sure, I'm suddenly blanking and can only think of hotel sites! Maybe that means I should go on vacation :hehe (Of course I can also think of real estate sites, so maybe I should buy a house? :giggles Though a vacation is a little cheaper.)

That's another thing I have no clue about, a job! I think I might start some classes online while he's gone, then I won't have to worry about being in the middle of a semester or any credits transferring when I go there and then if we move, since it would all be online. Plus it might be easier to have a job there with the flexible class schedule that comes with doing it online.

Haha, yeah...online would probably be a good option to start with!!! I just have to decide what I want to do :confuzzle I'm fairly certain I don't want to do what I'm doing now for the rest of my life.

Our only set in stone plans with a time frame are really only me going there when he comes home. We've talked about getting married, but nothing set in stone for when. On leave we talked about doing it after he goes back to school and before he goes back in, but who knows. We originally talked about me going there when he came home the last time, but a month before he came home, we found out my mom had cancer, so that sort of put me moving out there on hold. This time, I'm going. I can't wait.

hehe, I'm usually good at remembering people (usually), but I'm not sure that we've talked about it before, at least not about the plans from last year getting put on hold, cause I don't think I've told anyone on here about my mom having cancer, but I'm not 100% about that.

And of course we'll meet in person some day, remember, you're gonna be coming to play with my puppy after we make DB get me one! :giggle I don't think it'll really be that hard to convince him, he misses his dog from home a lot, and every time he goes home on leave, he ends up missing him more. Maybe we'll even end up being fairly close, since you said Vista isn't too far, I might look and see if I can find some places there. He has a bike, so I'm not too concerned about the 10 mile thing, since I know it wouldn't take him to get 10 miles what it would take someone in a car, since he wont get stuck in traffic as much.

by bike you mean motorcycle, right? :giggle that would be DF and my preferred mode of transportation out there...but you need a license to ride on base, which DF doesn't have yet, so he drives to work...it is WAY faster than driving a car, though, and more fun too! :)

heh, yeah, motorcycle, which he loves. he's fairly determined to get me to ride, he's even gone as far as saying he'd buy me a bike, just cause he wants me to so badly lol. I'll probably cave eventually, but I'm pretty sure my grandma would be really pissed at me...and even though I've got 8"+ on her, I'm still a little scared of her. yeah, DF is in love with his...you should look at my last post on the "how did he propose" thread...lol...he is talking about getting me one, even though he already has two out there, and a car...:haha i want to learn, but i'm kinda of scared because i tried to ride a dirt bike and tipped it...i'm determined to learn, though! Yeah, I can't remember how long after he bought his bike that he took it. He really didn't waste too much time after getting his bike before he got his license and took the course. I had an ex that always tried to get me to go riding with him and wanted to teach me, but for some reason, I just never would with him, and I had known him at that point for quite a few years, but with DB, I'm much more willing to, and I probably would have been 3+ years ago when I first met him, I think I've always known, on some level, that there was something different about him.

Since there's going to be a little time between him coming home and you graduating and moving out there, you could make him take it then, so he could then get his license and everything would be all settled and ready for when you get out there. If you wanna make sure you're forced to learn at some point, we can make some sort of pact, that we'll both learn at some point (without forever going by, and partly for the guys, since they seem to want it so bad lol), that way we'd have to lol.

I'm the same way, I wouldn't have thought of getting one before him, funny how they change things :) I trust him so much, I think a lot of that was helped by the fact that we were friends for a while first, even though like I said, I think I always knew there was something about him. I even bragged about him to my grandma when I went down to visit 2 and a half years ago... and we were just friends then, and I was dating some other guy! (But we don't talk about that, we just say I've been with him pretty much forever :giggle) She still remembers though :hehe

The pact was totally spur of the moment, but I think it's a good idea :)

And finally, my next post (this one!) was going to say that I just looked at the clock and realized that it was 4am, so while I'm not tired, I really should at least try to get to sleep. I'm starting to miss DB, too, with the random tearing up.

Good luck tomorrow! Talk to you later :hugs

how would you find out if there is a breed restriction? there was a housing manager on site, so he obviously knew they had a black lab there...is the breed restriction a city thing? :confuzzle

no alot of time when you look for apartments like on rent.com or anything like that it will give their pet policy and say weight or only small dogs or breed restricton. I usually just call and ask. Its not a city thing though

Craiglist is a great place to look at house rentals....oceanside vista fallbrook. I am pretty sure bulldogs of any kind are on most breed restriction lists and sadly german shepards are to (i grew up with them also)

Yeah, it sucks, too. My friend did point something out about dogs though, the ones you rescue that are more known for being aggressive, the people at the shelter may say that they're fine and everything, but really, you don't know what happened to them before they got there and how they were treated. You don't honestly know if there's some sort of trigger that would set them off. But we were mainly talking about pit bulls, but I do believe that that really could happen with any rescue dog. You never know. As long as you get the dog when they're younger and you train them well and properly, and also treat them well, I think they'd be safer, no matter what kind of dog they are. Plus, I think some dogs need that training, my cousins dog don't have it, and I swear one of them has the worst case of ADD I have EVER seen in a person or a dog! And he's so weird, too. But we love them :)

I guess I'm just going to have to look really really hard no matter what. I hadn't actually thought about looking at houses on craigslist, so I'm so glad you mentioned it. Thank you :) Are you definitely going to be going onto base when he comes home?

(Think I could pass off an english bulldog as a small dog? they're kinda short! :hehe)

HaHa ya english bulldogs are short and sooo cute! I want an all white one.

Um we may not be def moving ontobase bt we will be down there becuase thats our station. I have been loking at rentals houses in oceanside on craigslist and if we were moving soon I would already have gone and looked at them. Some are really cute and super close to the beach. I dont know how rent is where you come from but around here its really expensive. Like out BAH is one of the highest in the country becuase the living expense in SD california is really high.

Heh, I just came upstairs to change and checked my mail, saw that and figured it must be one of the girls on here, since it said I had a request from Deployments Suck :P I just accepted it, too.

Yeah, that's been where DB has been stationed since he joined, so when he isn't in Iraq, he's there. I was looking at some places on craigslist today (instead of doing what I should have been doing, :hehe) after I replied to you earlier, and I saw some really nice places, but of course they wouldn't be what would be available when we'd be looking, but I can still look at them now :) I actually found an apartment complex that didn't seem to have restrictions on dog breeds or weight, as long as you paid a deposit and a little extra a month, not too much more though. If I can find it again, I'll send you it. Being close to the beach would be extremely nice, but I don't think we should make that a priority... not a major one lol. Around here it really depends where you are for what the rent would be, you can find some places that are a decent price, but no where you'd wanna be, and then there are places you'd love to be, but no where good to live. I can't remember what DB told me BAH would probably be, but I remember that it's higher because it's more expensive to live there.

I'm thinking we might have better luck getting one of them by in an apartment than a german shepherd.... but that's just a guess. :)

Anything else you want to share??? I don't want to get married... not because I don't love him (I do) but because I REFUSE to have someone pass judgement on me in a job interview based on who I'm married to! At my age, I've put in some time on my career, and if not marrying him (yet) is what I need to do to ensure they don't ignore my resume, then so be it. I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR!!!!!

Oh, and I hate Oceanside, Vista and all the surrounding area's... OC is more expensive, but right now, on his bike, he's only 35 minutes from where he works (including the drive on base)....
And we have a large dog.... PM me if you want to know how we managed that one.... it's kinda secret. :)

Yeah, we aren't planning on getting married yet, gonna wait for that. He'll be E5 by the time we do get a place though, so I have no clue what it'll be. I'll look for the site again, and if I find any others, I'll be sure to send them your way! You have a pit bull, right?

Ok, this has absolutely nothing to do with anything previously discussed, it's not even military related... But I turned on my TV, Jay Leno was on, I left it cause I didn't mind the people he had on for the interviews, but then it got to the music.... And I feel like I've gone 10 years or so into the past. Backstreet Boys were on! They kinda sounded like crap, too.

Ok, I just had to share that :)
