View Full Version : What is the total you pay each month for groceries?

Kind of a spinoff of the food stamps/groceries debate that we just had...

What is the total amount you typically spend on groceries when your whole family is at home (meaning, your significant other is at home and not deployed, all kids are at home, etc)?

This is per MONTH for GROCERIES, not cleaning supplies, diapers, etc.

If you typically buy diapers, cleaning supplies, etc with your groceries, just give the nearest estimate you can for what you think you spend just on grocery/food/cooking items.

Incoming poll for this one also :)

400-700 a month. Depending on the month and what is on sale and where I shop. that does include all the sad little side shopping that happens too. :mumble

We shop twice a month and I work very hard to keep my total bill (for grocery, pet items, hygene items, cleaning supplies, etc) under $200 per trip. With a little fudge factor I spend no more than $450 per month total. If you take the non-grocery items out of the equation I would say we spend about $300 a month on food/groceries.

$400-$500.. Depends on if we've used up a lot of stuff or not. I never spend less than $400 in a month on groceries now that we're out here in CA.

sheesh for just food? I have no idea........I do all sorts of random shopping here and there. I usually go once a week and spend about 200.00 each time and then maybe little 50.00 trips here or there, but that's including cleaning supplies etc. I have no idea how much we spend on just food

Somewhere around $400 - $500 depending on if hubby's home and if we do a Costco run aka Hundred Dollar Store.

If the hubster is on a work-up, I don't spend that much money at all...probably like $300 - $400, if that.

Brialee

I would say about $150 every two weeks, that includes the little trips in between.

400-500 a month. we only go to the grocery store twice and do 2 weeks of shopping each trip. we get all the meat we need for 2 weeks and all the ingredients for those 2 weeks on payday weekend. the only time i go to the store not for a big trip is for essentials like milk or bread.

ETA: i refuse to shop at our commy because we got sick of tossing veggies if they weren't used in a day or two. i didn't want to be going to the grocery store for veggies (and then only MAYBE finding good ones up to our standards) before dinner every night. we shop at safeway and we get better veggies (they last close to 2 weeks), and much better meat.

I have learned to really despise Costco. I've found that their prices for most things really are not any cheaper than just buying at the commy, in most cases, and I hate that I go spend $250 at the grocery store, then go to costco and come out with 5 items and a receipt for $200 more :gaah I just don't even go there anymore. :pukey

Brandi
11-27-2007, 09:27 AM
Oh, and we usually spend around $400-$500 for food each month. I spend around $300 a trip but that includes our cleaning supplies, diapers, wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, usually an air freshener and/or candle :lmao and other misc crap that the kids pick up. So, I'd say we spend around $450 or so for just food alone,

Jen

For myself & 2 kids, I spend about $400 a month. I spend usually about $150 every 2 weeks (including our pet products & other necessities) & then a little bit here & there for the extra things we need between the big grocery trips such as milk, fruit, etc.

$85, for a family of three. That's food only.

Well, I live on campus. So I eat in the dining cafes on campus for about 6-8 meals a week, which saves money for sure. I probably spend $50 or less now. When I had an apartment, I spent about $100-130 a month. I'd have friends from church and neighbors over for dinner a lot, so it came to a little more than if it was just me.

I use to be really good at budgeting---In Cally we spend 150 on the first and 100 on the 15th. So around 300 (going back for small things and such)

Now I spend around 150 to 200 about once a month, then go once a week for about 60. So 60 for three weeks-180 then 200 for one week of the month--so 380 sometimes more sometimes much less.depending

We're a family of four and i try to do less then 300 a month. Its hard, but that usually include all my toiletries, cleaning supplies, and everything i need to pick up that month. I don't buy junk food or any sodas, so our bill is alot less then when we were buying all these things.

With a family of 6 and a disabled child, I have to special items and a ton of pediasure each month, which cost me an arm and a leg. I always budget $600 for the month and do coupons and menu's everynight.
But then add in the pediasure and going out to eat and that is why we can easily spend $800-1000 a month.

I remember when we first joined 10 yrs ago.. with just me and DH and a new baby, we spent $80 a month.. dont know how we did it back then.
Food is so expensive these days though.. its crazy, expecially out west.. I dont miss paying so much for food. I think I would be broke..lol

Same here.

I've noticed our food costs vary on our location too. We were buying the same amount/type of stuff in Maine and would spend on average $360/month. When we moved to FL, even trying to come up with cheap (and less healthy because they're cheap), I can't usually get out of this commissary under $200/pay period.
