moving to Norfolk in March... I'm coming out that way in feb to find us a place to live. Is there any way I can research good areas of town? or areas that are 'better' than others?

I live in WA right now and we live in a good little small town, but the town not 10 minutes from here is not so great... know what I mean? I want to make sure we pick the better of towns to live in :tu:cp:tu

Or maybe y'all could help me out? I'd love to rent a house, but I'd also be fine with another apartment to start out with. no kids.... yet ;) but we want them in the next few years.

Anyone know how to help me?

I appreciate it!

Well living in this area is pretty much hit and miss, with good and bad in every city. My fave cities ( and the nicest IMO) are va beach, chesapeake yorktown and williamsburg. The Ghent part of Norfolk is also very nice. It is kinda expensive around here so it depends on your budget when it comes to renting a house/condo etc. The low priced ones are typically in crappy areas. I hope this helps as a good starting point. PM if you have any questions caused i've lived within 30-45 minutes of norfolk most of my life...( I live in va beach now :) )

I agree with Shannon. I am from the area as well. I grew up in Chesapeake. My parents moved over the state line to NC almost 3 years ago. Right now I live in Newport News/Yorktown. I am pretty happy with it. My kids go to a great school in Williamsburg. Feel free to PM me anytime. i would love to get together when you get to Va.

It's much easier to tell you where NOT to move...so I would suggest doing some research, and then we can tell ya if it's a good neighborhood or not. :):)) Good luck!!!

I was always told to stay out of Green Run and to keep my kids out of their schools, but the scores for the standardized testing came out a couple months back (from last year) and their schools really didn't score that poorly.

We used to live in the Chicks Beach area of Virginia Beach, about a 5 minute walk from the Bay, but that area was pricey as hell. Now we live clear on the opposite end of Virginia Beach, near Oceana and I absolutely love it!

i've lived there my entire life....and i agree with what's said above...it'll be easier to tell you where not to live once you pick out some choices....but va beach is nice in most areas...norfolks not too bad you just have to know where to look...on one street it's not bad and nice...(like my parents) and then on the next street is a not so nice neighborhood....the street right next to them...(apartments are called mariners watch...stay away...)

The school isn't bad academic wise.. its more the people and what not.. Thats why people call it Gang Run instead of Green Run....

You definitely can't go wrong with the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake! We found our rental home on dodreferral.com/ahrn.com.

thank you... you guys have helped a lot... i think from what i've heard I know some areas to concentrate on, but I'll be asking more questions as the time gets closer and I narrow it down more! Its tough to move cross country!... I know people do it every day but.... :confused
