(CNN) -- Police are at a Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign office in New Hampshire to address what CNN affiliates are reporting as a hostage situation.

The affiliates said the incident began about 1 p.m. at the headquarters in Rochester.

WCVB-TV in Boston said it is unclear how many people were being held.

WMUR in New Hampshire said the hostage-taker was an armed man.

The WMUR Web site said a witness, Lettie Tzizik, told the station she spoke to a woman shortly after she was released from the office by the hostage-taker.

"A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,'" the Web site reported.

Clinton was in the Washington area at the time of the incident.

Details are still coming in.

An armed man claiming to have a bomb walked into a Hillary Clinton campaign office in Rochester, New Hampshire, and could be holding as many as four staffers hostage, a federal official told FOX News.

The assailant said he wanted to speak with Senator Clinton, the official said.

Clinton is not in New Hampshire.

Police have responded, and State and local officials are managing the situation, the official told FOX.

A bomb squad unit also is on the way, said Maj. Michael Handbrook of New Hampshire State Police, according to The Associated Press. Sharpshooters have been positioned near the building, and negotiators are also being sent, FOX News has learned.

Other nearby presidential campaign offices including those for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and John Edwards, have been evacuated, as well as other nearby businesses, according to news reports.

WMUR.com reported: "A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into [a nearby store] just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,'" witness Lettie Tzizik said.

A Clinton spokesman said no one has been hurt, but the campaign is still gathering information.

Clinton has cancelled her speech that was scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Democratic National Committee fall meeting later Friday in Northern Virginia, party chair Howard Dean announced Friday afternoon.

FOX News' Catherine Herridge contributed to this report.
