Can anyone tell me how long those in the navy typically get shipped out for? Are they literally away half the time? How much do they actually get to be home?

it really depends on where they are going, what their job is etc. my hubby is gone for about 3 months give or take though some rates in the navy go for a year because they're deployed to iraq/afghanistan/etc, others are gone 6 months. it all depends

It just depends. Sometimes it is 3 months sometimes it is up to 9. Since Jan of 2005 including all the month dets my DH has had to do I think He has been gone over a year or more. So that would average out to about 1/3 of the time.

It varies depending on a variety of factors, if he's on an Aircraft Carrier or a smaller ship or sub, if he's doing IA, etc.

My husband's longest deployment was 7 1/2 months while he was in the Navy. But, they did months worth of carrier quals and dets, so all that adds up to in addition to the actual deployment.

While on sea duty, expect him to be gone a good majority of the time.

I agree with the other girls it just depends. I had a friend who's husband had not shipped out in the 7 years he had been in the navy and dh has been in for 31/2 years and has been gone for almost 2 years of that, off and on (2 deployments) and workups and boot camp and all that

I depends. Mine is gone ALOT. Right now for 7+ months. The longest was 10 months. This is my 6th big deployment in 16 years.

mine is gone all the time on sea duty, shore duty he was home the entire time but that vary much depends on his rate, the longest deployment his ship did was 9 months he only did 8 of those. it also depends on the type of ship he is on as well. some of them don't go out nearly as often and some are gone all the time. after every deployment though they have to get requalified so they are in and out doing that as well. most of the time with the smaller ships they are in for a month then start going back out again, sometimes they go into the yards but its not right after the deployments everytime. sometimes they go from stand down to yards but they don't always, we have friends that are on the same type of ship as my DH and he has been here over a year longer than my DH and he has been home WAY more than mine has since we got here in april and has been gone quite a bit over 12 weeks i think.

I know hubby's ship either does a 6 month deployment (crack pac) or a 7-9 month deployment (west pac)...they haven't done any surges..from what I was told that is anything less than 6 months. this is our first deployment coming up and I am not looking forward to it...especially not with 5 kids. :sadeyes

Do you know his rate/job/etc?

DH has been gone 200 days this year, and he never "deployed", those were all work-ups,etc for the deployment. He just left in Nov so when he gets home next summer, he'll have been gone about 380 days in 16 months.

The good news is hopefully the ship will be home for at least 9 months before we do it all again.

Where we just came from, he was on shore duty and he was an instructor. He only deployed quarterly for 2 weeks. It was great! :)

John's normal job is an AT. That is an aviation tech. He worked in a shop or on the flight deck of aircraft carriers. When he was stationed to the ship he worked in a shop. When he was in a squadron he worked on the flight deck. I wasn't with him when he was in the squadron but I know the deployments, there were 2, were 6 months long. When he was stationed to the ship he did 2 deployments that were 6 months long as well. He got sent home early from both because of issues with his parents. The first time he got sent home was due to his dad having a heart attack and then having quadruple bypass surgery. He was sent back on for the last 6 weeks of the deployment. The last time his mom died and he was sent home and left home. There were also work-ups before the deployemnts, a 2 1/2 month school, dets when they got home, all sorts of stuff. So out of the 4 years he was gone for a total of 2 years. One of our good friends from the last duty station is also an AT, and on shore duty, and was told in August he would be going to Iraq for 6-15 months. They told him about 2 weeks before leaving they had someone that volunteered to go so they no longer needed him to go.

Now his ex-partner and best friend up here his an HM, corpman, and has done 3 years total in Iraq. He had to do 1 year and then volunteered for the other 2. His wife is also an HM and is there right now. She left in July and is supposedly due back sometime next month.

In other words, it all depends. Sorry I can't help more. With the Navy you never really know.

this is good info above, depends on a few factors. for navy - sea or shore command? on sea commands, depending on various factors - service members job, rate, etc determines how long they are gone for depending on where they are stationed etc. info above is good. :yes

Dh was on a ship for 3 years and was gone for roughly 1.5 of those with workups deployment and little underways.

The longest that mine has ever done is 8 months, but there have been several short workups every month or so...

My db will be exiting bootcamp as an E3. He's going in as yeoman to start. Ultimately, he wants to go into journalism. Any idea how these factors influence his time on a ship or at a base?

they are needed all over so he really can go anywhere they are just as needed on shore as they are on ships. that is a tough rate to predict.

when my dh was on the ship he was in and out of port all the time. sometimes they'd stay out so long and come home the day before they'd get a sea service pin, they would stay in port for like a week and then turn around and go on deployment. Ships are made to sail not made to be moored to the pier. When he was with the bees it was 10 months home and 6 months gone. The only time he left in the middle of the 10 home was for FEX wich is field excersise. Now, hes on shore duty but they are plucking guys left and right for IAs on shore duty. IAs can range from 6 months to 18 months.

My SO is being shipped out for 6 months but last year he was gone for 2 months so it really depends.
