What is the deal with being "Emo"? My niece classifies herself as emo and I just don't understand it. She dresses like it and has a lip piercing but is still really sweet, funny, and sometimes goofy ( when she is around me at least ). I just googled it and it said that depression, self injury, and suicide are associated with it. I don't get it. Is it ok to be emo or should I be worried about her? Is it just a fad?

fad, style of dress, boys wearing their little sisters skinny jeans, crappy music.

She will look back one day and go "Oh dear JEEBUS, why the hell did I dress so RETARDED!"

I think it can sometimes be a part of it but not always. I think it is more into the dress and music than anything....really sappy sad music. I like alot of the music it is actually pretty good.

Yeah, dont worry about her, it's just another way for kids to be "alternative." She'll like the music and like the clothes, wear dark makeup, but it's all just another way of expressing herself.

Emo is the new cheerleader, didn't you know?

I wouldn't worry. It's "cool" to be emo now. It's just another teen fad... pretend you're unhappy to fit into that classification.

I was very alternative back when I was in school... but that was way before it was cool. So I was just considered a freak and was a loner :lol

My daughter has a couple of friends back in Jax that called themselves Emo. They basically just wore darker clothes and make-up. They were not cutters or depresses, though they could be a bit morose.

She has been obsessed with funerals and cemeteries for as long as I can remember. She is a really good artist, too, and is constantly drawing pictures of graveyards and stuff. I just hope she doesn't actually want to go to one!

It's a phase. I went thru something similar too. She will outgrow it. :yes

don't worry about her unless you see other warning signs like inappropriate dress for the weather (i.e. long sleeves and pants in the hot summer, etc). maybe talk to her if you are really worried about it and the influence that she might be getting but i don't think it's anything to be worried about

Not much to worry about. My df calls me emo, but I'm not. Its basically how you look. And being "emotional". I take what is called "emo" pictures, basically just artsy fartsy. She's probably just jumpin' on the bandwagon. No biggie.

But I have to admit, I do have dyed black hair, pale skin, no muscles, old small shirt, and converse.

I think I'm emo.. :giggle

My sister has been calling herself "emo" but its only because of the clothes she wears & some of the music she likes. I mean, she still listens to Ashley Tisdale so I'm pretty sure she's not a full on emo.

For some its a fad that will pass in time. My cousin went threw the Emo stage. Shes just ended that stage now.

For others though Emo is a way of life. A small percentage of people that state they are Emo actully partake in what is noted to go along with it. "Markings on the body, death and so forth"

But most of the ones that state they are Emo.. are doing it because its a new trent. Sounds like she is an easy going girl. So dont worry its just like any other trend we went threw when we were teens.

Emo has evolved.

Ten years ago, the movement was just starting(with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, My Space Coaster, etc)and it was simply short for "Emotional Music". Generally singer/songwriter types, and much of the music was upbeat to some degree.

The "emo" most people associate with the word, is actually a bastardization of the original term that refers to a carefully packaged and marketed offshoot of goth culture and teenage angst. It's a costume for those without the passion or cajones of your traditional gothic types.

So...yeah, it's harmless. The latter is absolutely stupid in my opinion, but it's nothing more than a trend, she'll get over it.

I always thought emo was the current teenage trend of being whiney and complaining about their sad little lives in their livejournals.
I love the diagram. :lol

That is interesting, Loretta. I am sure the orginial "emo" people are kind of horrified over the current "trend"

ITA. DD is only 22 months but won't let us put pretties in her hair to keep her bangs out of her eyes. DH is like, "oh, she is soooo EMO" when she has her hair hanging in her face. :lmao

It's a trend or a fashion more than anything.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. I tease my brother that he's Emo. It's really just another highschool grouping. You need to go to YouTube and look up the "Tickle Me Emo" video. It's pretty funny!
