:dunnoWhen we move I will have to obv. leave my job in KY. We are making it ok on our 2 incomes but how do we survive on 1 income while I look for another job there. Most places wont even give you an interview unless you live there and even if I did get an interview before I couldnt pay for a plane ticket.
anyone else experience this? and make it through?
Thanks,
Becca

In 37 days..he got his orders after he got out of White Sands training just a couple weeks back. So everything is rush, rush. While he was gone the car died and a 23yr old boy had a seizure and totalled our parked minivan. We owed more than it was worth so we are paying on a veh we dont have any longer. Sigh...one thing after another ever since he left mths ago.
Maybe try some temp agencies?

I still would start applying to jobs now. When you submit your resume, also submit a cover letter and state in there that you will be in town available to interview on ___ date. It's best to start looking early! When you get there, begin to interview and even work at a temp agency for a bit to make ends meet. Good luck hun!

California is one of the states that has Military Spouse Exception for unemployment compensation. That means that even though you voluntarily quit your job before moving, you will be immediately qualified for UC because you're a military spouse who's following a transferred military guy. This is specifically to help you with the time before you can find a job. It's not 100% of what you're currently making, but it's much better than nothing.
You should also call your Family Employment Assistance Program (at the Family Service Center) to get information and websites from them ahead of time. That way you can at least see what the job market is like, and maybe even schedule some interviews for when you get there.
If you want more info about the UC military spouse exemption thing, go to http://www.usa4militaryfamilies.dod.mil/portal/page/mhf/USA4/USA4_HOME_1?current_id=22.60.30.0.0.0.0.0.0&content_id=242183
I really hope that helps!

Although I dont have any useful info like the above poster i can say that the job market out here is Iffy at best! If you are specialized in any sort of feild I would suggest putting your Resume on Monster.com. I have had all sorts of hits on mine and Ive only ever done retail. Plus this is the season for that though. I would suggest you be careful of the Kelly Services here in Monterey as they have a liking to dismiss you quickly...or that was my experence with them. Also check out hotjobs.com they are crazy busy and full of things right now.
What feild are you looking to work in and Id be happy to keep an eye open for ya. Its also a plus if you know Spanish as its a larg community out here.
If there is anything i can help you with please feel free to get in touch with me. Ill do my best!!

Thanks so much guys for all this info! I have really been so clueless about everything lol I got dear hubby on here and hes really glad I've met some people that have gone through what Im going through now :-)
When I went to his graduation in NM I could really tell all the military families were so close. Alot of the families had more than 2 kids so it was nice to not feel like the only one.
I check out these websites and start applying. I'm dispatcher for the med ctr here in KY and I was a police dispatcher before that.

We had a van and a car..until someone hit our parked van...totalled it. There is really bad transit here in Lexington no choice to have just one vehicle with a fam of 6...wondering if anyone knew how the transit was in Monterey..Im thinking about not getting a new/used van. Sure would save on money..if we can do it...

Transit isnt too bad out here. Depending on where you live (Most on FtOrd) Its about 15-20 min to the DLI (language school). Leave at about 650 in the morning just to beat the work rush and youll do just fine in 15min! Otherwise durring the day trafic isnt bad. We have a new shoping center that just opened up with a Target, Best Buy. khols and Old Navy REI. More stored soming soon. That is not far at all from the housing out here. Like 5 min to get there.
We have 1 car but only have 1 kid. Its not too bad out here.
Temp agencies...at least to hold you over until you find something you truly want.
