View Full Version : Moving to Maryland-no where to live! :(
Mrs. Stevens 12-02-2007, 06:03 PM My husband and I will be moving in Mid-January to Ft. Meade, Maryland, and we don't have a place to live yet. Housing won't put us on the housing waiting list until my husband is physically there, so we have a delay in when we get there a when we have a house.
SO...
Can any of you ladies recommend any nice apartment complexes we could stay at in the worse case scenario?
Thanks!!
Lckychrmzz 12-02-2007, 06:33 PM Where is Ft Meade at? I'm in Waldorf, MD
The Megster 12-02-2007, 06:39 PM I say Google it. I know that the area around Ft. Meade is pretty good, so neighborhood shouldn't be a concern.
retrvinfool 12-02-2007, 06:42 PM Columbia is a nice planned community. Lots of shopping and lots of town houses & apartments. You shouldn't have a problem finding a place. Now for temp housing I'm not so sure about specifics sorry. Try craiglist for Columbia MD I think that would be a good place to start. I'm in Arlington VA and my DB is trying to get stationed back in this area at Ft Meade. Welcome when you get here :-)
AmandaR 12-03-2007, 08:57 AM Columbia MD would be my suggestion. We lived there the last time we were stationed at Fort Meade and will go back there when we return next year.
Have you seen base housing at Fort Meade? If you can afford to live off post, that would be my preference.
Julianne 12-04-2007, 05:46 PM Craigs List is always good to check too.
Navywife41203 12-13-2007, 04:21 PM I would suggest trying to look in Odenton. There's a planned community called Piney Orchard that is very nice. Plus, it's only about 5-10 minutes to Ft. Meade.

mrsjohnson1222 12-13-2007, 05:06 PM i'm going to fort meade to in jan with dh and dd. We spoke with housing today the waitlist is 30 -40 days for us but the good thing is since dh is coming back from an unaccompanied tour in korea we get higher priority and even though we have to be in person to start the waitlist it goes back from the day dh departed from korea yay! and temp lodging is giving us 30 days to stay in lodging so hopefully in that time well get out home.!
tazthis 12-14-2007, 03:31 PM Sheltor Cove in Odenton, There are also some apartments in Piney Orchard-Odenton, they are newer, I can't think of the name of them...sorry
BzzzWife 12-15-2007, 11:21 PM Check out www.apartmentratings.com
Good luck in your search....
AnAopps 12-18-2007, 07:05 PM All of the suggestions that were made are great. But PLEASE PLEASE be wary of Pioneer City! The community itself has been renamed but ask around when looking at places off of Reese Road.
I lived there about 4 1/2 years ago and it was not a great place. My nieghbor got shot while taking out the garbage... no more need to be said... I got the heck out of there.
But the community has been doing its best to rebuild in the past 2 years and make it a safer place to live, so it might be better now, who knows?
Good luck and welcome to the area!!!!
trevsnavywife 12-21-2007, 10:02 PM My friend lives over at Ft Meade and said they only ended up staying in a hotel for a few days before they got into a place. I suggest calling again, and see if you speak to someone else, what might happen, that is how it panned out for us here at Annapolis.
goldilockz 12-22-2007, 10:18 AM I live literally about a mile from Ft Meade, in Laurel. PM me if you want. I know of a few reasonably (for maryland) priced complexes around here.
snowangel200x 12-22-2007, 05:39 PM I didn't go through all the posts, but out in Sikesville (it's about a 30 min) drive there's some affordable townhouses. Piney Ridge i believe it's called. However, you can not have pets there (though I'm told that people do). I did not chose to live there because our dog is a chewer and a barker and knew we could not hide him :). We looked at a lot of apartments in Columbia (which are very nice) and area surrounded Ft. Meade. They were very expenisive when you concidered the price + bills.
If you ask, picerne (the military housing company here) also have temporary housing on base where it's fully furnished while you wait for your new house. We were stuck in the same situation as yourself and stayed with a friend for a few days, also used TLE (where they pay for 10 days in a hotel up to 180 a day so you can stay in a nice hotel). Then we were lucky enough to get a temporary house for 30 days and got in our townhouse on base at the end of those 30 days.
Best of luck!
Angela
