Ron Artest had ice on nearly every part of his chiseled body Sunday afternoon at Kings practice, from his shoulder to both knees and even a cold pack on his hip.
But the bumps and bruises are nothing compared to the heartache Artest and his family have felt recently. In an exclusive interview with The Bee, the Kings small forward revealed his 4-year-old daughter, Diamond, has a cancerous Wilms' tumor on her kidney.
The youngest of Artest's four children already has undergone surgery and a biopsy at the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, and she began chemotherapy Thursday. The tumor, of a type that primarily affects children, will need to be shrunk by way of the chemotherapy - according to Artest - because Diamond was born with one kidney.
"It's a curable cancer, so that's something to look forward to," a composed Artest said. "She's a tough girl. My baby's precious."
The cancer was found, Artest said, when the Kings were heading to play at Phoenix on Nov. 21. He flew to Indiana and missed that night's game, yet hasn't missed any games since while making a second trip to Indiana between games. His daughter, who lives with Artest's wife, Kimsha, in Indiana with the family, left the hospital Saturday and will undergo routine chemotherapy treatments and tests.
