MINNEAPOLIS -- A man died after falling several stories and crashing through a glass roof at the IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis today.
Shortly before 2:00 p.m. the man was clearing snow from the glass roof of the Crystal Court, when he slipped and fell five or six stories and died.
Minneapolis Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia says the incident is clearly an accident. The man’s name will not be released at this time. He worked for Columbia Buildings Services, Inc. of Minneapolis.
Police closed off the lower part of the Crystal Court, which has a food court and some shops, and are in the process of clearing the skyways entering into the IDS Center.
"We don't have to make this a public viewing," Garcia said.
The IDS tower, a city landmark built in 1972, overlooks the Nicollet Mall, the downtown's major shopping area. Scenes from the Crystal Court were featured in the opening segment of the original Mary Tyler Moore show.
The 51-story tower overlooks the Crystal Court, which features a 105-foot ceiling-to-floor water fountain and a canopy of glass skylights.
FOX 9’s Beth McDonough is at the scene and will report live with more information on FOX 9 News at 5:00.
