Just a forewarning since I do transcription, you really can't do it if you have young kids at home, its practically impossible unless they are napping. I know you don't have kids right now, but if they are even remotely in your future within the next few years, transcription may not be the best thing to pay to go to school for. Its an excellent choice if/when you have school age kids who are gone all day though.

I used to do a little medical billing and coding and worked in a docs office for a WHILE as medical reception and it definitely isn't the easiest thing to do, but I think to go into nursing it would keep me in the direction I want to go as far as being applicable to work and all. It might even help a little in certain areas.

No kids for a while... if Dh is going to do spec ops then it'll be at least 5 years. So I think this would be good for me. The dogs can easily be put in their kennels or outside, or I can work while they are napping and all tired and lethargic during the day! LOL! Then when they want to play I can take a break and wear them out again.

My aunt is doing careerstep as well and I just wanted to see what everyone else would recommend. Thanks ladies!

I am a medical transcriptionist!!

I attended M-TEC, which is one of the most recognized and highly regarded schools in the industry. (They were also the first school approved by the ACCP approval panel, and they currently have a 100% placement rate of their graduates).

I do not agree that you can't do it if you have children. I have a lot of MT friends with young kids who are working full time as MTs from home.

Career Step is an approved school as well, but I would not recommend them. I highly recommend M-TEC and The Andrews School as a close second choice.

With M-TEC, you get all college-level textbooks, a great number of current medical reference books including a current version medical dictionary, and the BOS (AHDI's Book of Style - the medical transcription Bible [Career Step does not provide this invaluable book last I heard]). You also get a foot pedal. The only items that you have to provide yourself is your computer and internet connection and a headset, which you can get for as cheap as $10 from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack). In addition, M-TEC assigns you your very own instructor who follows you through the entire training program, and all of their instructors are CMTs (Certified Medical Transcriptionists).

Check out their website at www.mtecinc.com. They offer a military discount if you pay your tuition in full. You can also email Susan Francis at sfrancis@mtecinc.com. She is the Co-Founder and CEO of the school. She is also a good friend of mine - tell her that her USMC MT sent you! LOL

If you have any questions about the career field or the school, you can also PM or email me. I would be happy to share my experiences with you - oh, and I graduated and got my first job while we were stationed overseas!!:cp

I am a medical transcriptionist as well. I'm not sure what to tell you about the schooling, but I can suggest a great job for you if you want the information. :) www.spheris.com You can work from home (I do) and they even send you a computer and everything to work on. Really flexible hours...it's a great job.

I'll give you my name for a referral if anyone needs it. :)

I have been thinking about doing this as well, I am looking into going through Career Step, I have heard many great things about them form people who have gone through them.

They are also offering assistance for military spouses, they give you 20% off the tuition if you are a military spouse, which I think is pretty awesome.

The thing about having kids is that in doing transcription you have to listen to the audio files in order to transcribe (obviously you know that), and if you have young kids who require your attention, who are crying/screaming etc etc, it just makes it harder to do, that is my point. It can be done, its just so much easier and faster in a quiet, non-interupptive environment. That's my take on it anyway.

I totally agree w/ Kristen! I got a taste of it and it is not that easy, and definitely not easy when you have a child.
