ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A Fort Richardson soldier who survived hundreds of missions during his year long deployment in Iraq is killed in a collision with a moose.

Army Spc. Steven Cavanaugh, 24, was driving on the Seward Highway between Tudor and Dowling Roads Sunday night when a moose ran in front of his car.

Cavanaugh was crushed when the moose landed on top of his Camaro convertible.

The solider was in a coma until his family took him off life support yesterday.

His family is planning a funeral next week in Cavanaugh's home town of Atlanta.

:tears That is so awful!

I'm forever telling my brother to go slower on the roads, one of these times that could be him.

My cousin SSGT Alan Sacks, survived a deployment into Afghanistan in 2002, and then we lost him in a drowning accident. When He calls you home, that's that.

That is very sad! I used to slightly worry about that when we lived in Maine. We would see them on the side of the highway sometimes. One woman got killed not far from where we lived.

I know some cars sold up in Canada are reinforced around the windshield area, since moose are more common in Canada.

ok....this is very very sad :no :(

but...I'm also one of those people who have inappropriate giggles

and this is like giggling at a funeral...but...

A MOOSE!?!?! I mean, how asinine is that? A freakin moose! Who would want their eulogy to say they were killed by a MOOSE LANDING on top of them!?!?!

Yup moose are pretty bad up here in Maine.

I think they are pretty to look at but I know that they can do a lot of harm to people. :(
