If your hubby told you that the upcoming pick lists didnt look that favorable for his rate for orders here in the states and told you that the worst case scenario would be to either pick to do an IA assignment for 12-18 months or however long it was or pick to go to Guantanimo Bay Cuba for 1 year which would you choose. Not that is what my hubbys choices are but thats just worse case scenario. I want to know the good, bad and the ugly. I really dont want him to have either one but in case there is nothing for him by march of next year to choose that has him staying in the states on sea duty which would you choose and why.

I choose Guantanimo Bay Cuba for the year....the reason I say that is for

1. Its 12 months, not 18

2. Its NOT an IA so its alittle safe (or atleast I can think it is)

3. Its a secure base

4. I like the idea of not getting Hazzard pay!!! LOL

But then again if hes looking to get points and getting extra pay...go IA

going IA will give you day for day for your sea duty do that meas less time out at sea next tour.

he WILL get hazzard pay!

They call it a secure base over there, but its only as secure as them in the sand make it....

its really going to depend on what hes looking to get out of it....if its just to get by for the year...then I would go the first route forsure!

I would pick Gitmo. Is it unaccompanied? They do have accompanied orders over there now. I worked with several people who spent several years at Gitmo. Granted they were civilians, but they liked it pretty well other than being pretty isolated. Now, they did say that those who worked on the detainee side had it much worse. The detainees know exactly what they can get away with and know that they have media attention, etc. They constantly spit and even urinate on the guards and heckle them, because the guards can't do anything back. So, he would have to deal with that as well if he is on that side.

Is this his last round to choose from? Can he wait one more round?
All in all I would rather him go IA for the 12 months which would A) keep you guys somewhere stable for the year B) not get stuck with a crap set of orders and you all unhappy for 3-4 years. in a year things could be totally different.

Gitmo. I hope you end up with a better set of orders than that though! :hugs

well he has until March to pick something or by April they will be picking something for him. And if he Gitmo it would be on the detainee side and I really dont want him there.

with the time frame his orders are in, I don't know if you guys will have too much more choice. I know that winter/spring is sometimes slow season when it comes to orders.

Have him talk to his career counselor and get on the horn with the detailer to see what they can work out. If they want him to take IA that bad, they should offer him follow on of his choice. There are also special programs, things that are not up on JASS. You have to research hard and look at all the possiblities.
