View Full Version : what is with...
lauren33 12-12-2007, 10:19 AM ok this has nothing to do with deployment but its driving me crrazy...
what is seriously with all the mall shootings, school shootings, and just shootings in general lately?!!?!!?
im like scared to even go out to the malls now because of this!! i feel like pretty soon we wont even have malls anymore, everyone will just shop online because it wont be safe to leave your house anymore
also i feel like there wont be schools for kids in the next decade or so because of all the shootings, bomb threats, and violence....i think all school will turn into online classes for kids or through the tv.
its a crazy world we live in!
SAMSET 12-12-2007, 10:26 AM I know...I dont understand it one bit....I especially don't understand the media making "celebs" out of the shooters either :(
What is the world coming to...seriously?
TallBlondie82 12-12-2007, 10:32 AM i can definitly understand why all these shootings are taking place...the school i work in is full of crazy kids!! and they are only 8th graders!!!
I can't imagine what they will do when they get older when they are already doing bad stuff when they are 14!
it is so scary to think that these kids are going to be leaders one day...i know there a LOT of good kids out there...and it is unfortunate that they do not get the credit that they deserve...the bad kids receive all the attention...which is horrible to me

yes its really unfortunate, because THAT is exactly what these killers are looking for - recognition and fame!! Its a sad thing to think THIS is the way they want to be known...as murderers. I just view them as troubled, lonely, selfish and in need of help from those around them. It truly is sad :(
gottli10 12-12-2007, 12:43 PM It's scary because I walk through a mall to get to and from the metro (for work) every day - I live in the city. It's scary to think some gunman could just be lurking on the 3rd story and shooting down at me.
FlyboysGirl 12-12-2007, 01:51 PM It really makes you wonder why.. :puzz
I know it could be 18 million different things, but in the end it's all so scary to me.
What made me chuckle is that at one of the church shootings a church security guard shot the shooter, since when do churches have security guards?! I've never heard of such a thing, perhaps it's where i'm from? :confused

You know the REALLY sad thing? Almost every one of the school shooters was a kid that had, at one point or another, been identified as a kid at risk. These kids are desperately crying for help. Probably, some well-meaning but overloaded counselor said, "I"m going to talk to ______ tomorrow," but tomorrow became the next day and then the next and then it was too late.
One of the things that we have in our district is a program for kids with emotional issues - those kids receive higher levels of attention so that behaviors don't escalate to something desperate like bringing a gun to school.
Ultimately, they are all our kids; even the ones in trouble. The "good" kids don't need as much from us - just a push in the right direction. It's the kids who are slower to learn or learn in a different way that need every thing we have - only then can they learn. The kids who put up barriers to learning or receiving what we offer by acting out. Chances are, those kids are not being taken care of at home. It's only when we are all paying attention to WHY they act out that we can get through to them. Sometimes the care they receive at school is the ONLY care they receive at ALL. And it's not just up to the schools - communities have to take ownership for EVERY child's welfare.

Sorry, y'all - I'm really passionate about kids. (probably why I'm in the school business, huh?)

I've never heard of Church guards either... Wow, our society has really deteriorated!
I agree that some of the children were at risk before, its very unlikely just POOF one day they decided to shoot up the school/mall! There are warning signs, people are just ignoring them

wow i couldn't have said it better myself...I teach the at risk kids, i teacch special ed...and i TRY my hardest everyday to make them feel loved, positive and "worth it"...most of these kids have the most HORRIBLE home lives...and sometimes I can't blame them for acting out...but it is up to us to stop this...if i go to school and am not positive for some reason my kids pick up on that in a second...IT IS SO IMPORTANT to be a positive role model for these kids
