View Full Version : Gimme all your advice!
Lckychrmzz 12-14-2007, 08:24 PM I'm sure we have done this before but I think we should again.
Give me all the pregnancy advice you have!! What to do, what not to do, what to buy, what to eat, what not to eat, how to do anything. Gimme it all! :thanks
Lckychrmzz 12-14-2007, 08:52 PM :bump
MandyK 12-14-2007, 08:58 PM Do not eat everything you lay your eyes on just because you think you're gonna get fat anyway.
:P
Lckychrmzz 12-14-2007, 08:59 PM Do not eat everything you lay your eyes on just because you think you're gonna get fat anyway.
:P
awww man ..I was looking forward to that :giggle I have been about 3 times as hungry and I was fat to begin with.
harrisonsdream 12-14-2007, 09:01 PM eating for 2 is a myth--you only need 300-500 extra calories (depending on your starting weight).
i highly recommend eating what you crave but in moderation. if you want to have some oreos have some but have only a few not the whole package.
with morning sickness, preggie pops work great, as does ginger snaps and ginger ale.
sleep as much as you can
i found bananas helped alot after i threw up to make that taste go away.
drink lots of water, stay hydrated
i say stretch as often as you feel comfortable (i recommend yoga for pregnancy)
Rileysmom 12-14-2007, 09:01 PM Always eat or drink something when you take prenatals, if you haven't figured that out already!
A diaper genie is a waste of time, in our opinion. We heard the same thing when we bought it, but we used it for a couple months, that's it. It is now holding up a box in the garage! :lol
Don't go gaga on clothes, bottles, diapers, binkies etc until after they are born. Riley couldn't fit any preemie stuff because he was so big! He hated the first bottles we gave him (which we had 12 of), he took 5 different binkies before finding one he liked. You might know what YOU like now, but what the baby likes can and probably will be much different!
Read the Jenny McCarthy baby books. They are hilarious and true!
Do your own research on things rather than believing what the doc says... being that I moved to three places while I was preggo due to the Navy, I had three different opinions on everything... turns out docs have personal preferences in addition to medical opinions too. :wink
Take pics during your pregnancy.. that's one of my biggest regrets.
Enjoy it, because it all goes by SO fast!
SLEEP now. It's the last nine months of good sleep you will get in a long time!
Invest in a good body pillow or preggo pillow, worth every penny IMO!

Thats what i forgot to get at the grocery store.. bananas. I loooove bananas too. I cant eat oreos :P They do have gluten free ginger snaps so I'll get some. I got ginger ale... buy 2 get 3 free!
I'm STILL not tired! That and bigger boobs is the 2 things I was hoping for and am not getting. I know I will be eating my words later lol
Is koolaid ok?
*Melissa* 12-14-2007, 09:05 PM Take lots of pictures of your growing baby bump
I put choco butter on my belly everynight to help with dry itchy skin ( I also didn't get strech marks, which is a plus)!
Get a lot of rest.
Enjoy every moment (L) It's such an amazing experince!
harrisonsdream 12-14-2007, 09:06 PM kool aid is okay as long as it is sweetened with sugar or splenda not sweet and low or aspartame. i just used the oreos as an example lol

I have been taking prenatals since Sept and have always taken them about an hour before bed with something small to eat.
I really want to cloth diaper and it just so happens we bought a house with a deep sink next to the washer and dryer.
Thats really good advice about the bottles and pacifiers. I'm gonna try and breast feed too but we shall see, I am open to change.
I was gonna buy Belly Laughs the other day but got in "trouble" for spending too much lol I did buy the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy and its so funny!!
I'm anal about researching everything!
I already started the belly pics and no matter how fat I feel I'm gonna try to take them once a week. I know Jennifer will be on my ass to do that lol
I looked at body pillows but what kind do yall recommend? I have just the standard straight one that I bought last time DH was out to sea.

I wish I had used that stuff YEARS ago when I got stretch marks. I'm not too worried about getting them since I already have them everywhere (I went skinny to really fat quickly) I might pick some up anyways to help with the itchy. Is there a brand thats better then others?

Palmer's is supposed to be really good. But remember, if you're prone to them (it's genetic) then you'll get them anyway, you'll just keep them from looking as yucky with the cocoa butter.
harrisonsdream 12-14-2007, 09:14 PM stretch marks are caused by genetics more than if you put lotion on
Lckychrmzz 12-14-2007, 09:14 PM kool aid is okay as long as it is sweetened with sugar or splenda not sweet and low or aspartame. i just used the oreos as an example lol
I buy the kind with lots of sugar in it lol Me likes sugah! So is splenda ok, I have heard both yes and no.
I am gonna try and talk Tommy into letting me order from a gluten free bakery thats in PA.. they shipped certain food. I ate some of their stuff when I was in PA for a wedding and its so yummy.
JennyK 12-14-2007, 09:15 PM Stay active. If you are working stay working. If you walk every day keep doing it. Unless the Dr. tells you otherwise. IMO it makes labor easier.
Steph* 12-14-2007, 09:16 PM Drink plenty of water!
Walking is great exercise :yes
Get as much rest as you can now.
Don't think you have to eat for two
Plenty of belly photos

Thats what I figured.. plus I have them everywhere from my stomach, to hips, to armpits, breasts, butt, backs of my knees, arms.. everywhere! I'm 'blessed' with that and nasty cottage cheese thighs. My skin is dry though so I figured I'd find something good to help.
Devinn 12-14-2007, 09:17 PM Thats what i forgot to get at the grocery store.. bananas. I loooove bananas too. I cant eat oreos :P They do have gluten free ginger snaps so I'll get some. I got ginger ale... buy 2 get 3 free!

Is koolaid ok?
:giggle ur still pretty early...give the big boobs and the pure exhaustion some time....its coming....along with the morning sickness (which btw, 411, I didnt really get with any of them :shhh :teehee)
kool-aid is fine, but I would use splenda...u dont want the aspartame in sweet n low and equal...but u dont really want the sugar either (calories!)
INVEST IN A HEATING PAD! ur back and pelvis will love u.
do ur own research and dont listen to everything u hear...9 times out of 10...its bullshit.
take naps...whether u feel tired or not...LAY DOWN.

I want boobs NOW! Its funny b/c DH and I were talking about getting my boobs done after he gets his extension bonus in January.. dont need to now lol They JUST started to get sensitive tonight
I guess I could buy the sugar free koolaid and add splenda (I have a big ol bag already). I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia last year so thats why I just use the sugar kind.
I have 3 heating pads already lol I have Chronic pain ;)
I usually take whats said with a grain of salt then research the hell out of it. Its funny b/c *i* have educated a lot of my doctors on things they had no clue about (Celiac Disease)
I usually get up at 5am with DH and take a nap as soon as he leaves for work :giggle
Lckychrmzz 12-14-2007, 09:22 PM I used Palmers... it really helped with itchy skin!
I'm gonna pick some up... as long as it doesnt have wheat or oat in it. Thank you!
jays_wifeyUSMC 12-14-2007, 09:24 PM DRINK WATER!! (i'm learning this the hard way.....i hate water!)
Take prenatals everyday good for the baby and YOUR HAIR! :)
Rest in between chores
Don't buy diapers until the baby is born!!
DO what you feel is right for your baby and only you! If you dont want to breastfeed then DON'T if you dont want to use Cloth Diapers then DON'T is doesnt make you a bad parent! :)
Eat small meals ever 3-4 hours...it helps you from feeling nauseated in between meals.
I RECOMMEND A BANANA A DAY! (just because I love them and they gave me a boost in the morning.)
GOOD lUCK!
wife-n-mommy 12-14-2007, 09:27 PM drink a ton of water, walk, do perineal massage an kegels (this makes birthing a lot easier and lessens the liklihood of tearing) http://www.childbirth.org/articles/massage.html
also... get yourself some pure cocoa butter and vitamin E oil... put it on your belly starting now 3 times a day (this helps with preventing strech marks)
make sure to eat something the minute you wake up in the morning to help not feel sick
take belly pics
have fun looking at all the baby stuff
enjoy every minute of it...doesn't last long
Good luck :)
jays_wifeyUSMC 12-14-2007, 09:28 PM just wanted to add instead of buying the diapers just keep a diaper jar...like put 10.00 away every week until the baby is born and instead of having the diapers piled up in one room...you have your own personal diaper savings jar. :)
Devinn 12-14-2007, 09:28 PM you know u MIGHT wanna talk to ur doctor about ur diet.
if ur hypoglycemic then u need the sugar, but u DONT need the calories right now....baby doesnt need all the sugar...but u do.... :thinking...there has to be a balance somewhere
MelissaMc424 12-14-2007, 09:31 PM I buy the kind with lots of sugar in it lol Me likes sugah! So is splenda ok, I have heard both yes and no.
I am gonna try and talk Tommy into letting me order from a gluten free bakery thats in PA.. they shipped certain food. I ate some of their stuff when I was in PA for a wedding and its so yummy.
Splenda is OK, as is Lactaid (not sure if you need it, but just incase) Splenda's made from sugar and is natural in that aspect to it's fine.
A limited amount of caffeine is ok, so long as you aren't drinking more than the equiv. of 2 cups of coffee a day.
Give in to cravings, with moderation. With DD I craved anything orange in color.. didn't matter what it was (food only) as long as it was orange.. Taco Bell mild sauce was a staple.. I put it on everything. I also couldn't eat the bun on a hamburger. I'd be lucky to eat half of the bun, pick the meat, cheese, and pickles off and eat that like I was starving.. :hungry
Like Trey said, Diaper Genies are a waste of money..We never had the fancy bottle or wipe warmers either. DD never could take silicone nipples (she collapsed them) so we had to use the old fashioned rubber ones. Be prepared, your baby may not take binkies, soothies or pacis... mine didn't.
You never have enough onesies and socks.. Your baby will be born about the same time as my DD (her bday is Aug. 12) and she lived in onesies/onesie dresses and socks when she was a newborn.
I still love my "mommy limo" (as Kat calls them...lol) but when he/she is old enough, invest in a good, lightweight umbrella stroller.. we love the Jeep one. I hated having to lean over to push just about every other umbrella stroller out there.. I'm only 5'6 so it's not like I'm a giant..
Oh, and morning sickness.. that's a lovely lie.. mine lasted about 6 weeks and was ALL DAY long. I finally found that if I ate breakfast (I loved breakfast hot pockets) I was ok. But before that, I threw up sprite, peppermint tea, toast, crackers.. all the supposedly soothing stuff..

I have tried to cut it down to sugars that are naturally in foods unless I'm feeling dizzy then I will eat a piece of candy. The doctor had me eating a few pieces 2 hours after any high carb meal. So I'm trying to cut back but not too much that it could even been slightly dangerous. I know theres a chance it can turn into diabetes especially since my brother is type 1. I was going to ask the ob ...whenever I finally get my appointment.

I stopped drinking caffiene a few months ago but had 1 dr pepper once a week (grocery shopping lol)
Thanks for mentioning Taco Bell :flippa lol I have been craving that so bad I think I'd kill my husband over it (joking.... kinda) I tried making my own Mexican food and it didnt work.. I still want it.
Oh how much does it matter if I was born 4 wks early and so was my mom? My mom says all the women in the family delivered around 4wks early.
Jeep stroller, my dad would be all for that lol In another week or two he will own THREE Jeeps (they ordered a Jeep Liberty, they own a Wrangler, and hes restoring a Willys) I am a giant lol I'm almost 5'10. I plan on testing out all the strollers in person making sure that I can reach them without bending over lol
wife-n-mommy 12-14-2007, 09:42 PM forgot... palmers is way overpriced... pure cocoa butter (wal mart has for like $2 for a huge tub in lotion section) and pure vitamin E oil (drugstore like $4)... take a glob of butter and couple drops of oil and blend together...it's a lot cheaper, lasts longer, and works better ;)

The banana a day is also great for preventing leg cramps!! Great advice about following your heart too.. BF'ing and cloth diapering are good choices if they work for you.. but so are formula and disposables....

Victoria 12-14-2007, 09:52 PM Buy a video baby monitor IF you have the funds for it. We LOVE ours!!!!! It's great not having to check on our child with EVERY noise we heard and such. It's also great to have when your child is older and KNOWS how to take off their own diaper and such. :D

I wish we would have done that too... sometimes I get up freaked out only to realize he dropped his sippy over the edge or it was Elmo's eyeball banging against the wall and not his head! We will definitely get the camera one with #2 so momma can sleep a bit more! :yes They are very reasonably priced these days too!

I totally plan to! Ever since Kara told me about it when they got theirs I knew I had to get it lol Especially since my DH is all high tech and I'm paranoid.

That's the newer version/model of what we have.
Cassaundra 12-14-2007, 10:35 PM Get Teething Tablets NOW!!! You will be grateful for them later...works so much better than orajel. I love older women but DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!!!! Most of what I got told was old wives tales and i got sick to death be/c of it. Ambien is your friend and given at a low dose is amazing. get the karma sutra for pregnancy.....you will love it!
Mommy2Bailey 12-14-2007, 10:47 PM Sleep now. Dont be a fool like I was and think you will sleep when the baby gets here.
Eat what you want. If you want a doughnut eat one. Just dont eat the whole dozen.
I totally stocked up on diapers and wipes. Even if you have too many packs of a certain size once baby gets here stores will exchange them.
Dont buy too many newborn size clothes. Bailey has a bunch she only got to wear twice!
Walk a lot. Or any excercise you feel up to doing.
Plan on breast feeding if you want to but dont feel like a failure if you end not not being able too.
Same for your birth plan. Dont feel like a failure if you ask for drugs.
Lots of belly pics.
Keep a journal and write to your baby every day or two. They will love reading that when they get older!

So I've never been pregnant. I have terrible baby fever, but thats another story for another day.
I just wanted to say that I don't know how you manage with Celiac Disease, I give you major props! One of my best friends was diagnosed with it this past summer and she is also a vegetarian, so she is trying to figure everything out. She is also a beauty product whore and had to throw out TONS of stuff. :hehe
Okay, thats all!:offtopic

It was a pain in the ass when I was first diagnosed. I had to get new pots and pans, new makeup, new food, new shampoo, conditioner, lotion, everything! Now I know exactly what I can and cant have so I dont spend hours in the store anymore. I cant eat beef so it makes it a little harder. I think if I didnt eat meat I'd starve. I hope she is taking vitamins and sticking to the exact diet b/c if not it will do a LOT of damage even if ingesting a TINY bit of gluten. It leads to so many problems like 2 types of cancer, infertility, etc. This baby has a chance of having it too but really its not an issue for me. S/he will be a hell of a lot healthier then me lol If your friend needs any info I have a TON. Where does she live?

Jennifer 12-15-2007, 09:26 AM Take belly pics weekly or deal with the wrath of Jennifer.
Journal. Write down everything, it will be so cool for your baby to go back in 20 years or so and read everything about this when they are expecting their first.

Yup.. MIL is now expecting them too and so is my mom. My friend Christina wants them so she can make a scrapbook for me.
Erika 12-15-2007, 02:50 PM Pillows were my best friend, I slept with one in between my legs, behind my back, and underneath my stomach as I got bigger. And of course the heating pad and I were also aquainted, lol.
My biggest thing was just to enjoy it. I didn't really watch my weight, I ate what I wanted when I was hungry, I didn't want to spend my pregnancy counting calories. Take pictures, if you want that cute maternity outfit, get it. Spoil yourself, pregnancy can be a miserable time for some people (:giggle ) do whatever you can to make it more enjoyable!

His parents were just here and we told them... his moms FIRST advice was "if she has a craving.. GO GET IT.. she will hold it against you for ever if you dont. I still hold it against your dad when he didnt get me Taco Bell 26 years ago" and I said "Ya well too late, I wanted TACO BELL last Sunday and he wouldnt get it" Its crazy that her and I had the same craving lol They gave us a very generous Christmas present so now I can get maternity clothes :D
WIKSWIFE 12-15-2007, 03:09 PM The best advice given to me was to RELAX!!!!! Women have been having babies since the begining of time and it is a natural process. Ignore half the warnings given to you, eat right, sleep, and enjoy the miracle.
Brandi 12-15-2007, 03:14 PM My biggest piece of advice I can offer you is to listen to your motherly instinct and do as little or as much as you personally feel comfortable with. If you worry yourself constantly with what others think and do, you will be miserable. Mother nature gives us a great instinct that kicks in almost right away, and it will *almost* always never lead you in the wrong direction. Listen to your intuition, talk to your doctor when in doubt, but be sure to remember that it's YOUR pregnancy, no one else's and you don't have to live by anyone else's standards or rules.
And take LOTS of pics, even if you feel horribly ugly. I didn't take many with any of my pregnancies because I was incredibly swollen and bloated, but you'll miss this time.
I can't wait to follow your pregnancy, I've been wishing this for you for a long time (L)

awww thank you Brandi. Dont worry I will be posting weekly belly pics unless yall tell me to stop b/c the fat is making you vomit lol Then I may ignore you and do it anyways lol
I'm sure I will be asking questions but trying not to be "that" girl.. the one who is constantly asking stupid crap lol
I will keep yall updated with doctors appointments and ultrasounds. :)
Lckychrmzz 12-15-2007, 05:29 PM I am resisting the urge to go buy maternity clothes and baby stuff lol
Amanda 12-16-2007, 12:34 AM First of all i'm soooo happy for you :hugs
1. if you have a craving it's okay to give into it..just don't eat TONS of it(I remember my friend nicole and i were pregnant at the same time and we wanted homemade choc. chip cookie dough so we made it..we only had a couple bites but it got rid of the craving lol)
2. stay hydrated!!! you will be due in August and let me tell you the summer is miserable I won't lie to you :giggle Try to drink tons of fluids!
3. Follow your instinct! Usually what you think best is the best
4. belly pics
5. Enjoy the pregnancy it goes by so fast. Who cares if you get stretch marks...you'll get them if you are prone to them and if you get none count yourself lucky..but if you do just chalk it up as a battle wound :) Also don't worry so much about the weight you gain you will gain what that baby needs you to gain and what that baby NEEDS...it will come off eventually. Don't waste your pregnancy worrying about scales and stupid stuff like stretch marks...
6. if family and friends live too far away make a baby website for free(i used totsites.com) it helped me to keep my friends and family up to date with the pregnancy and now with pics of ds.
7. talk to the baby no matter how dumb you feel they really do enjoy the time you spend talking to them.
8. make a birth plan but always know that it can and probably will change. There were tons of things I didn't think I'd want to do but I did when the time came..I totally changed my mind. Don't let other's advice make you feel like you HAVE to follow it..it's your body your baby and your pregnancy.
I'm sure there are more i'll add more if I think of some :)
Lckychrmzz 12-16-2007, 12:39 AM Awesome advice Amanda.
I'll have to check out that site, my family is in CA and his are in CO... I have a cousin here and he had aunts, uncles, and cousins here. I'm gonna have to get my mom a webcam too.
I already started talking to it lol Of course when no one else was home ;)
