View Full Version : Over there.
Britt 12-18-2007, 11:39 PM My husband feels like he didn't do his part while he was in the Navy because he was never deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan.
I was just curious if anyone else's husband has NOT been over there?
A poll is coming.
MIKOSWIFEY 12-18-2007, 11:41 PM He's over there right now, in fact.
Wicked 12-18-2007, 11:42 PM Adam never went. He was slotted to deploy when the war started, but because of his job he wouldn't actually be IN theater. Closest he would have to get was Qatar. He ended up staying behind while his unit left because he was also slotted to go back to AIT and reclass and that was deemed more important. His unit was only gone for a few weeks (6 I think), they only got as far as Romania, and then when "Mission Accomplished" and the end of major combat operations was declared they came back home.
Adam feels like he didn't do enough sometimes too, even though he was ready and willing to go. :(
usmc_wifey85 12-18-2007, 11:42 PM My dh went last year but he still felt like he didnt do what he could cause he was pretty much on base the whole time he was there.
Britt 12-18-2007, 11:45 PM The closest DJ got was when he went to Guantanamo Bay for six months. He provided medical care for the detainees and was in essence supporting the war, but it's not good enough for him. He was embarrassed when the VA rep told him he would be an Iraqi War Veteran.
Nickschic 12-18-2007, 11:48 PM Yep DH was back in july03-feb04.
Wicked 12-18-2007, 11:50 PM The closest DJ got was when he went to Guantanamo Bay for six months. He provided medical care for the detainees and was in essence supporting the war, but it's not good enough for him. He was embarrassed when the VA rep told him he would be an Iraqi War Veteran.
Yeah, Adam is officially an "Iraqi War Veteran" too, because of his "support" for the war with his job (Intel), but he doesn't like that he got that title.
NavyWife410 12-19-2007, 12:00 AM My husband has never gone over there, and probably never will unless its for IA...His rate is submarines only and they can only be stationed in kingsbay or banger. So no iraq/afganistan for him probably ever
*MarineBug420* 12-19-2007, 12:33 AM DH is currently on his first deployment to Iraq. When he first joined he worked on the Naval Weapons side of Camp Pendleton and when you work over there you are not undeployable...So after two years they tend to switch everyone around. He was switched in April and deployed by October...He still feels as if he doesnt give enough
RunAwayLove 12-19-2007, 12:36 AM nope but he wants to if he doesnt get discharged in april theres a 98% chance he will be going soon after
MontanaSweetie 12-19-2007, 12:36 AM James was deployed to the Gulf region while he was on ship.
DJ should be so proud of what he has done while in the Navy - he's provided a great service to many military members and their families who need it. For that alone, he should be proud.
harrisonsdream 12-19-2007, 12:40 AM nope and he can't go unless a waiver is signed for him
68W-LVR 12-19-2007, 12:42 AM Yup. DH is there now. Our first deployment. He is going outside the wire today again so he is seeing way more of Iraq than I even wanted him to. He seems to get excited about going out. Crazy man...
Rileysmom 12-19-2007, 12:45 AM Yes twice! Hoping to avoid adding another for his duration of time in the military.
leftover 12-19-2007, 12:47 AM He was deployed from Sept 2005 to August 2007..
Dani17 12-19-2007, 12:49 AM Well I said he's been there multiple times because he went to Iraq for 16 months and is on his way to Afghanistan within the week...:sigh
wb3690 12-19-2007, 01:01 AM MULTIPLE times.......always.......it's always the region he heads to........
I'm over it and so is he. He said he's MORE than done his part.....I completely agree.
ETA that out of 5 full deployments three were to the middle east and two were to japan..........and his current command does several dets a year however he was gone 85% of this year and it was to the middle east
kbmarie 12-19-2007, 01:10 AM was in afghan. for a year, getting ready to go to iraq for a year..
kitkat 12-19-2007, 01:20 AM DF is there right now for the first time. i'm sure he'll go at least once more.
80% of the unit that just joined with DF's has never been deploed before.. most are 3years in he said! i think thats crazy!!!
missjenn00 12-19-2007, 01:21 AM mine hasnt been over there yet but when he finishes school he will be gone alot.
Donna 12-19-2007, 02:08 AM DH has been over there twice on ship and is going again on the ground next year.
kathy 12-19-2007, 07:28 AM We are pretty sure DH will being doing a surge over there by summer. He is excited..im slightly nervous
TallBlondie82 12-19-2007, 07:39 AM this his his 1st time there...he was supposed to get out of the army this feb....he left in November...
Rain. 12-19-2007, 11:05 AM DH is on his 2nd deployment.
mrs_ski 12-19-2007, 11:08 AM My DH is over there right now for 6 months, and he went over there in April for 2 months.....
I hate it
DianeS 12-19-2007, 12:07 PM my hubby has never been and probably never will, with his job and him being in the Air Force they dont go overthere but he does go other places for 4-6 months at a time
=Mrs.AiNokeA= 12-19-2007, 12:26 PM DH has been deployed to Bahrain 3 times so far.
rosebud* 12-19-2007, 12:31 PM 3 times with a ship, once on the ground for a few weeks.
mossey2000 12-19-2007, 12:38 PM He's been and will be going again.
Mike leaves next week for pre-deployment training, then ships off to Iraq in the spring with 2nd Marine Division.
Britt, Mike has felt the same way about "not doing his part" for the past few years. I always would tell him that he takes care of families of the deployed and makes sure they are healthy. Your DH went to Cuba and went through a lot, he did his part :yes He answered Uncle Sam's call :)
scheibla 12-19-2007, 01:14 PM This is db second time over - the first time for a year and this time for 15 months. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes again after this.
HunnyBunny 12-19-2007, 01:39 PM he just left for the second time :( First time to Afghanistan and this time to Iraq... left on Monday.
Mandi 12-19-2007, 01:51 PM Dh is in Iraq right now, but wouldn't be there if it wasn't for this IA.
define 12-19-2007, 02:16 PM Yep, twice so far.
Britt, he did his job in the Navy and he should be proud for what he did. :)
ProudNavyWife 12-19-2007, 02:32 PM DH is on 2nd one over there right now.
Britt 12-19-2007, 10:34 PM Yep, twice so far.
Britt, he did his job in the Navy and he should be proud for what he did. :)
Thank you - everyone who wrote such nice things!
I'm EXCEEDINGLY proud of my husband. He did his job and he did it REALLY WELL. He is a good corpsman. He under appreciates his role and what he's done during his six years in the Navy. I know he's proud to have served, but I think he'll always wish he could've done more. I'm sure everyone who's served probably has similar feelings.
princessgwynn 12-19-2007, 10:49 PM Db is there right now- finishing up a year long deployment (knock on wood!!). It is his first in his 10 years in the Army.
mrskmw 12-19-2007, 10:50 PM Yep sure has
Steph* 12-19-2007, 11:59 PM MULTIPLE times.......always.......it's always the region he heads to........
I'm over it and so is he. He said he's MORE than done his part.....I completely agree.
ETA that out of 5 full deployments three were to the middle east and two were to japan..........and his current command does several dets a year however he was gone 85% of this year and it was to the middle east
Wow that sounds so familiar :lol ;)
Ditto to Amy & even with DH on shore duty now, he's deployed once. I'm sure it will happen again. :suspect
thejibstah 01-01-2008, 10:46 PM nope and he can't go unless a waiver is signed for him
Ditto. Though DH was saying something about them possibly not letting them go period.
luvmysailor81904 01-01-2008, 10:47 PM He went to the Gulf once
jen1982 01-01-2008, 10:49 PM My husband is currently serving his first tour to Afghanistan. He will change MOS's shortly after coming home though. He will definitely serve overseas again, but we won't be sure where until later.
Theresa 01-01-2008, 11:03 PM Yes, multiple times. Blah.
carmel11725 01-01-2008, 11:15 PM yep-three times.
Miss B Hav'n 01-01-2008, 11:25 PM DH's first deployment as a Marine was to take part in Desert Storm. From 2001-2003 he made three trips over there - the first two were deployments with a squadron tasked w/enforcing the no-fly zones left over from Desert Storm and the third was with that squadron to take part in the build-up and initial invasion of Iraq. He is now slated to go again this summer.
Yes a couple times and he's preparing to leave yet again.
Lefty80 01-01-2008, 11:37 PM DH is over there too. This is his second tour. He got word last month that he might have to go back again. Only after being home a few months! We are hoping and praying he won't though.
misskathee 01-02-2008, 11:56 AM once he's been to afghanistan now he's going to iraq
JavecT 01-02-2008, 12:18 PM DB is in Afghanistan right now serving his first tour
LaneyBug 01-02-2008, 12:43 PM DH has been several times, but I never went when I was in. My slot always came up at the wrong time. I had orders, I was pg, and then I didn't have enough time left. Timing...
nutmagc 01-03-2008, 01:54 AM He went to Kyrgystan which thankfully isn't were the action is. but it was about 500 miles from the Afgani border. I hope he never has to go over there.
tinsygrl 01-03-2008, 02:03 AM Db is on his 4th deployment...
PrincessBlue505 01-03-2008, 02:26 AM DH hasn't gone. He almost did a mission near there, but they replaced him cuz he came home on leave for DD's birth. So that was lucky.
DH feels bad and inadequate (sp?) when people thank him for his service and protecting our freedoms because he hasn't been over there. He feels like people are thanking the wrong service member when they thank him cuz he hasn't directly fought in the war. He feels like he doesn't deserve their gratitude cuz he's not the one fighting there.
Manchu Ma'am 01-03-2008, 10:44 PM All the guys do their part in some way or another. The navy may not neccessarily be on land fighting on the front lines but they're out talking with other ports from other countries and cities in someway that's them fighting. My b/f did a 2 month sailor to soldier experiment and fought on the front lines in Iraq. So @ some point whether they've been overseas or not they're defending our country! God bless.
Sarah 01-03-2008, 10:51 PM Mine has been "over there" a few times. On the ground and on a ship.
My husband went to the gulf once and is gearing up for another this spring.
jen-marie 01-06-2008, 03:11 AM He hasnt been to the war.. but he is in Germany. Hes safe, so I am really thankfull. But other than that.. I can't imagine it being too much different other wise. I don't see him more than once a year, and we only talk every few days. :dunno
(i hope that came out right, not trying to piss anyone off or start drama)
Corenn 01-06-2008, 03:20 AM MY husbands first time was in '06 and he almost went on land (they decided last minute..i mean like RIGHt before) that they just wanted to take 1 person no 2...he next time in the Gulf will be later this year.
Kaiden'sMomma 01-06-2008, 05:51 AM DF spent three separate 8 month deployments over in Iraq. Lol. I plan to go eventually as well!
disneylovinfamil 01-06-2008, 08:07 AM Mine is gearing up for a second tour (Iraq) and he was also at the Pentagon that helped with recovery after the attacks. he said that was worse then overseas and that is what gives him nightmares at night. They were there less then 24 hours after the plane hit doing security and recovery. His 1st tour overseas was to Kabul, Afgan.
Jenabugg 01-06-2008, 09:24 AM My db has never been to the "bad" places but he did a year in Kuwair and now a yeah in Qatar... with only 4 months as home in between.... :(
luvmyjer 01-06-2008, 09:32 AM DH has never gone but feels like that too. He joined in the middle of a war and wants to do his part in the Sandbox. But I know his job is important to the mission downrange. So he just doesn't feel it cause he's not physically there.
