Do a military theme..Request that everyone wear some sort of Camo or army green... (I wanted to throw DH a Khaki party when he was promoted, but it didn't end up happening) ... Go to a local army surplus store and buy MREs to hand out as favors at the end of the night..

No problem... you could also just get cheap little "army men" toys and use them to decorate.. Your local party store would have some camo decos I'm sure.. Maybe get your local bakery to do a camo cake... (in case you can't tell, I love planning parties!)

we got everyone together for pizza and games at peter piper. He had a great time with his friends and got to just laugh and enjoy himself :)

I just planned one for Dh before his deployment a few weeks ago, all in all it was worth it, I would say 75% of the guest that RSVP'ed didnt show up:no, so that was very upsetting, I had cooked and planned for some many people and we ended up having allot less.
I went all out with the red, white and blue decorations, banners etc etc
We decided to do a taco type bar where we had shredded beef and chicken with lots of toppings and then a flag cake. I did go to the dollar store and buy a few GI Joe wall hangings for $1.
For games, since it was adults and children, we played who know's Eric best and pictonairy with military type cards for it.
Oh and for party favors, we did something a little different, we found these soldier prayer books at the dollar store and hubby just put a small message in the front cover and people loved it.
Hope you have fun.
Sometimes, I think pizza, booze and no kids would have been allot easier, but what can you do..lol

I'm also thinking of doing this for my DH, he leaves in March. I don't want to have something at my house because it's small.

I was thinking of pizza and games. Or we have a race track for adults near our house. It's kind of expensive, but I want people to come, so maybe that's not a good idea. Any good ideas for location?

He's navy.

Well lot's of booze, and karaokee would be awesome, just stuff you might not be able to do in boot camp. Like have lots of candy, and music, dancing and fun things. You could do the theme "The things you won't have for a while" you know? haha i dunno it could be really funny

we did a going away party at my inlaws before df left for iraq. we had lots of food, an army cake
we ordred those (lance armstrong bracelets/livestrong) in camo and had his name put on them. we let everyone have and it was a reminder to keep him in his prayers! everyone loved the braclets and it was good to have everyone together before he left.

My biggest suggestion is to ask him what he wants. One of DB's best friends and I put together a surprise party for him and did everything in red, white, and blue. Cooked out on the grill, had the pool open and tiki torches as light. Just for a fun sort of time with his friends, but it really didn't end up working out as well as we planned and he ended up wanting his own somethign different before he left so he and i threw ANOTHER going away party with exactly what he wanted.

He really just wanted a casual night at his house with all his friends and family. The guys played backyard football for a while, and they had steak and home food that he knew he'd miss. Then the guys played video games and whatnot before we all headed out to a late night movie.

That's my biggest suggestion

I think that's a good idea. Sometimes I'm not the best at guessing what he wants he's a LOT better at that than I am. Any suggestions then for parts that could be a surprise? I mean if I tell him he'll obviously be able to invite who he wants and get the kind of food he wants, but how about other stuff to do/get??
