Cayci 04-12-2006, 12:26 PM Looks like my dh will be getting orders for Bangor or Bremerton. What is housing like? Do you live on base or off-base and what would you suggest? I am a new military wife and have never done a move or lived the "military life." We just got married in February. Any advice or info you could give me would be great. Also do you like it there? Thanks in advance!
Gabrielle18 04-12-2006, 12:57 PM Hi!! I'm moveing to Bremerton/ Bangor area on May 31st! I went and visited and I absolutly love it!!! There a bunch of different places that you can live. Base housing is supposed to be nice, but we are going to live in Jackson Park. Its off base (so you dont have to get your ids checked what not) but its only Navy (i think) no civillians. The town houses are really nice there! If you want more than a two bedroom i think there is a waiting list (i'm not really sure).
http://washingtonmilitarywives.com/ <-- this is a forum chat thingy created by a really nice women, Alecia, who is moving out to WA soon (if not already there, I forgot) Its not as big as this one and its a lot more personal! I really like it because I"m new too, to this whole navy thing. MY df and I are getting married as soon as I move out west. So i understand the whole confusion thing!
Also there is a website for housing www.navylifepnw.com that can help with the whole houseing thing!
I hope this helps!!!!! :)
April 04-12-2006, 01:02 PM There is some older housing and newer housing, brand new housing and renovated units. :lol that doesnt much help, I know :D
I suggest every wife living in housing at least once. Its nice to have experience with every aspect of navy life so that you can better understand others and life. Its good to live in housing right away so that you dont alienate yourself from people in the same situation as yourself.
some people think its better not to get involved at all. Guess it all depends on your personality ;)
I really like WA so far. Its much cooler than HI but not so cold you cant stand it :lol
SubmarineWife 04-12-2006, 03:13 PM The housing on Bangor is nice. The Jackson Park housing is nice but has a bit of crime. At Bangor there is west housing with newer units with little to no yard for pets mostly townhomes. East housing is pet housing and the units have good size yards. For a 2 br there is no waiting list. If you want to see some units go to the PPV office not the housing office. Housing will tell you there is a waiting list and PPV will get you in a unit within a week. You can go here and look at pictures and floor plans of the units. http://www.housing.navy.mil/onestop/main.htm . If you have any questions you can send me a PM. Im also a co-owner of a yahoo group for bangor wives. If you'd like the link just pm me.

There has been a lot of crime in both areas due to bored teenagers. They have caught some of them.

Ok, I don't mean to turn this into a debate, but please tell me where is the crime you are speaking of? I have lived in Jackson Park for 2 1/2 years, and never once have I had anything negative go on in my neighborhood. Jackson Park has been given a bad name , because 15 years ago, it was a "not so nice" area and there was some crime. Now, it's gone through a major overhaul, and it's really nice! Sure there are older housing units in the neighborhood, but I live in the new housing here, and it's very nice and quiet. The yards are manicured and it's clean. You are going to get bad people everywhere you go, and yes I have seen some trashy tennants at Bangor. Just because it's behind the gates doesn't mean that nothing bad goes on there. The mp's patrol around here quite often, and since this housing isn't PPV, the government is putting more money into JP.
I take it very personally when people assune there is crime here, when I can say first hand, there isn't!! I feel very safe living here, and this is one of the nicest housing areas in the navy.
navywifey, if you would like to see pics, I would be more than happy to post them for you. :)

EXACTLY!!! It's the kids who get bored. It's nothing major. Mainly them throwing an egg at your driveway or car. That is the ONLY thing I have seen happen here in my 2 1/2 years living here.
KDMatthews 04-12-2006, 04:36 PM I live on Bangor base in the West housing. I just moved in last month and I really like it. we have a 3 bedroom and it's pretty roomy and in nice shape. The pluses about living on base...you have everything so close to you: the gym, the post office, the commissary, the NEX, etc. And you're surrounded by people who have crazy lives just like you, so you help eachother out when you need a sitter and your hubbys gone, or whatever. They know the inside stuff. The down side...it gets annoying having to go through the gate and show ID everytime you come home. And if you have parents come to stay you have to get them temporary ID's. But, all places have goods and bads.
April 04-12-2006, 04:36 PM my neighbor is with security and says its the same kind of petty crime in both places. They arent sure why all of a sudden but they have set up stings.
KDMatthews 04-12-2006, 04:38 PM Also, about the crime, I've heard of teens vandalizing on Bangor base and I've also heard of cars getting broken into on Jackson Park (April's for one). It's just stupid kids, not anything to be scared about.
SubmarineWife 04-12-2006, 04:39 PM about the crime in JP, I have heard from other ppl about the crime. I haven't seen it myself so i was just passing on what i was told.

well, second hand information isn't always the most reliable ;)
Believe me, I wouldn't dare live in a hell hole or crime infested area. Like KDMatthews said, you have it happening on Bangor as well, and all it is is bored kids.

ditto! no way would I want my kids growing up in a hell hole:no
April 04-12-2006, 04:44 PM There are little kids playing outside until dark in my street. I feel safe enough to let my 2 year old play out there with them. There are parents out and one even bought a sign to put at the end of the street when the kids are out :D
SubmarineWife 04-12-2006, 04:46 PM Yeah sometimes second hand info isn't always the best, but when it comes from ladies that i trust i believe it more. Im sure crime goes on at Bangor, but i haven't seen it on MY street.
Sarah 04-12-2006, 04:48 PM Well, does your friend live here? If not, then I hate to say it, but I think my info and April's would be more accurate, since we live here, JMO.

:shock dang, which street was that so that I'm sure to stay away? What kind of crimes so that I'm ready when something happens?:inshock

I don't know the street name but ill ask her when i see her Sat. Cars getting broken into, cars getting keyed, someone trying to break into houses, trying to get into her while her DH was out to sea, yard decor stolen ( which i know you can't help ). The main things that made her move was the cars and the houses getting broken into.
Sarah 04-12-2006, 04:57 PM well, I'm sorry that happened to your friend. Stuff like that can also happen at Bangor too. They aren't immuine to it. Luckily I live in such a nice, quiet neighborhood, where nothing happens.

MP told me yesterday that despite the rumors there has never been any attempt to enter a house. Those rumors are false.

Oh i know it can happen at Bangor. It can happen anywhere you live, housing or out in town. I live in a great neighborhood at Bangor where nothing hardly happens.
Sarah 04-12-2006, 05:01 PM Yes, I too have never heard of any attempts to break into the houses. The housing office has always kept the residences up to date with suspicious activities going on, and we never hear anything. The last big thing that was going on happened over a year ago, and someone thought they saw a cougar sighting :wow. Turns out it was a very fat cat :roflmao
We do have town meetings in JP, and they keep us abreast of everything.

:puzz All i know is she said it happend and happend to her :dunno
Jennygirl 04-12-2006, 07:23 PM In the defense of JP and i live on base btw...There was so much crap everywhere and junk thrown about around here cause the kids were on break...so i think where you live around here you will have some issues...
Gabrielle18 04-13-2006, 07:53 AM If you want to see some units go to the PPV office not the housing office. Housing will tell you there is a waiting list and PPV will get you in a unit within a week.
I have a question... what is the difference between the PPV office and Housing?? And who should we go to if we want to live in Jackson Park?? We had thought about living on Base but I think I'm going to be working in Seattle so JP is a bit easier.

Housing the the navy part. You are supposed to be put on the waiting list with them and then once you get to the top of the list they refer you to PPV office (here called american eagle) and they actually do the work on the houses and assignments. You can be on the list for both places. Jackson Park is still run by the navy so you have to talk to housing for that.
not sure if you know this but to get to seattle you will have to take a ferry that is at least an hour long each way. It is a bit of a commute.
SubmarineWife 04-13-2006, 11:45 AM why would she HAVE to take the ferry? She can drive it....yeah depending on the time she could hit traffic at the narrows but she'd hit that waiting for the ferry. Driving only takes an hour to hour and a half.
Just wondering?
April 04-13-2006, 11:59 AM well of course she could drive it. I was looking at the shortest time possible. There is no way she can get there for less than an hour. And if shes working normal business hours and she tries driving it, it will be closer to two hours or more.
Gabrielle18 04-13-2006, 12:06 PM I know how long the ferry is, its no big deal. I'd rather take the ferry. I'd hate to sit in traffic for an hour where as on the ferry I can read or use my lap top. It's just the company that I work for has an office like two blocks away from the ferry terminal. A lot of peoplel I know commute into work where I live currently. I mean Albany's not a huge city but people that live an hour away still work here.
April 04-13-2006, 12:08 PM Thats great that the company is so close. Its much easier if you can walk on the ferry and then walk to work because getting your car on that early is the pits too.
SubmarineWife 04-13-2006, 12:11 PM oh thats great your company is so close to the ferry. And i agree with April, walking on might be better.
Gabrielle18 04-13-2006, 12:12 PM Yeah I can imagine! Plus Seattles a big enough city where public transportation shouldn't be big deal anyways.
Mochasuga 04-20-2006, 01:36 PM I just moved to Jackson Park in November we actually ended up in one of the 3 bedroom older units, and it is really nice... I LOVE it here! CRIME? I havent heard of anything! Besides there is crime everywhere and anywhere even in expensive neiborhoods! I havent experienced anything since I have been here! It is really quiet and nice, and I love being by the water! I love it here!
