We're here in Great Lakes, too. John is in RDC school right now. We like the area ok. We're not crazy about it but we don't hate it. We lived in FL. for 4 years so we are trying to get used to the snow and cold again (we are both from Ohio). Breanna saw the snow for the first time up here. She loves to have snow ball fights. The first time I threw a snow ball at her though she had no idea what to do. She just stood there and looked at me so confused.

We're here in housing and so far am very happy with it. We're in Forrestal village. The housing in this are was recently taken over by PPV so they are currently remodeling ALL the houses. (as in tearing them down and rebuilding from scratch!) They are doing it in 3 phases and phase 1 is already going on. And eventually there is supposed to be a pool at the community center etc. I like the fact we are 5 minutes from the base. Especially during the winter when we get the big snows. Hubby doesnt have a long hard commute.

Thank you Kristi. I just called the housing office there. Very wierd. We have a four bedroom here, they told me I would get a three bedroom there. WOw, that is a big change.

We might have to live out in town. Do you know any great rental sites. Thank you again.

Cost of living out here is pretty high. You can try www.rent.net or www.forrent.com I do know alot of people buy houses out here. It just wasn't in our best interest. Oh and I also wanted to add that alot of people live up in Kenosha, WI because it is alot cheaper. But it is a 40 minute drive so you need to factor in gas and our winters here are pretty harsh so in the snow the commute is alot longer etc. We have a few friends that moved there to save money and they arent saving much because of gas and then of course the commute bites in the winter...

I think normally you would be elgible for a 4 bedroom here with 3+ kids but with the construction etc they might be filled or they might be getting torn down or something. In our handbook it says it is preferable that all kids have their own room but children of the same sex to a certain age can share...So that might be why. G'luck!

Good luck and tell your dh to have that in writing that he will be an instructor. I've seen many get screwed over by Manpower (they tell you where you will get assigned). Your dh could get instructor duty or even the lovely barracks. Good luck though and Welcome to Great Lakes

I used to live 45 minutes away from Great Lakes and I miss cold weather. All we ever get here in JAX, FL is hot, hot, and then some more hot. Humidity too!

RDC hours can be long but so can regular instructing. With RDC you get rewarded tho. You do a year of crappy hours and working your booty off the a year of standdown where you are home by like 11 everyday etc. So it has advantages definatly. (thats what happened to 3 of my neighbors anyhow)

For ME the summers are hot. I do not like humidity nor anything above 75ish and it can get into the 80's and 90's and be pretty humid. Winters are cold. Currently its 21 degrees outside and will cool off even more tonight. So be prepared. And they can be snowy. The plows usually are good about keeping the roads ok tho.

Its all in what you make of it truthfully. The area is ok and chicago itself has alot to do. Winters can be depressing since they can be so cold so you are limited to indoor activities for the most part. But once spring and summer hit you can get outdoors and do alot. Muesums, Navy pier, 6 flags, zoos, etc etc

The winter is definitely cold and the summer really was hot, but there is so much to do here and TONS of job oppertunities, so I really enjoy living here. It is really cold, I had no idea how cold it could get, but dress warm and don't spend a lot of time running around outside :hehe

All the housing out here is now PPV. they are remodeling all the housing here. They will be single family homes, upstairs and downstairs. It is forest city running things here. But they also allow civlians to live here as well. Just a FYI. FOr more info you can visit www.nsgreatlakesliving.com

They will all be pretty much the same once construction is done. They are tearing down literally ALL of our housing and rebuilding it. Currently they are tearing down Forrestal which is where I am at. They are also tearing down and redoing ft sheridan. Glenview will be no more. Forest city here is a bit different then in Hawaii. (just their rules and such) Like I said they are allowing civlians to live here now. And instead of each child getting their own room they are ushing children to share rooms etc. But all the housing here will have all the same types of things once construction is completed. And they are doing it fast. They have some already built.
