View Full Version : Do you Save Change??
Ellen 01-08-2008, 10:54 AM We have a jar on the dresser to dump our change into every day. When that gets full, it get's dumped into a bigger container put away. We really need to go deposit it. It's amazing how quickly it adds up.
I also do the 'keep the change' deal with Bank of America. Basically, when I use my debit card, it rounds up my purchase to the next dollar, and that amount goes into my savings. Example.....I use my debit card for a purchase of $10.75...... 25 cents will go into my savings account. That adds up quickly as well.
MelissaMc424 01-08-2008, 10:54 AM Yep, DH keeps a 5 gallon water bottle that he drops his change in each day..
MontanaSweetie 01-08-2008, 10:55 AM Yes, we save our change.
I wish my bank had the round up to the next dollar thing. I think that is an excellent idea! :yes
rosebud* 01-08-2008, 10:55 AM we keep our change in a fish bowl. Sometimes i use it for spare change when I may need a twelve pack or some gas. We don't deposit because our share branch credit union doesn't accept coins rolled or unrolled. :dunno and I am too cheap to use coinstar or the like
jen1982 01-08-2008, 10:55 AM I save all of my change, and all of my one dollar bills. It adds up quick. :D
theElephant 01-08-2008, 10:55 AM yup, we do. We call it "elephant food"(my piggy bank is in the shape of an elephant). Ellie's almost full!
HEIDI 01-08-2008, 10:56 AM Yes we do... it is the 4 wheeler fund :teehee
rosebud* 01-08-2008, 10:56 AM My bank doesn't offer the round up either, but I do it in my check book/ledger. I just round up to the next dollar amount and then at the end of the month I dump my leftover into savings.
Ellen 01-08-2008, 10:57 AM My bank doesn't offer the round up either, but I do it in my check book/ledger. I just round up to the next dollar amount and then at the end of the month I dump my leftover into savings.
That's a GREAT way to save money!
CoffeeGirl 01-08-2008, 10:58 AM we sure do!:D
phantomfg 01-08-2008, 10:58 AM One advantage of living in Vegas is that I can take my jar of change over to any Casino Cage where the money is poured into a hopper, counted and paid back out to me in bills. I'm about to do that very thing tomorrow, for a jar left behind by my DB. I'll bring him the money on our final get together prior to his deployment.:cp
goldilockz 01-08-2008, 10:59 AM :yes We put our spare change in the "Care Bear" and at Christmas time, we donate it to a select charity.
sgmwife1 01-08-2008, 11:00 AM Yes we do and amazingly it adds up to between 30-50 dollars a MONTH. WOOHOO.
We use it as "blow money" and we love it.
Pebbles 01-08-2008, 11:02 AM I have a water bottle in our laundry room for change.
Hubs loves to leave change in his pants pockets.
BLBnJVB3 01-08-2008, 11:03 AM We divide the change and put it into piggy banks for the kids. The older 2 love putting the change into their little banks.
flangl18 01-08-2008, 11:03 AM We dump change for a year or so and then use it to do something fun as a family. Last year it paid for our trip to Orlando - two nights in a hotel and food, as well as our tickets to WonderWorks.
Victoria 01-08-2008, 11:05 AM :yes
It all goes into Ethan's savings account. :)
RunAwayLove 01-08-2008, 11:06 AM i sure do i have a piggy bank and:) i do save the change too its saved my butt a few times:)
sdshorty 01-08-2008, 11:07 AM Yes, I have a big brass Piggie bank (its actually a brass pig :P) that's in the living room where loose change goes. She is full right now above her belly. Not sure what the change will be used for once its full
Dh uses quarters for work so I try to steal everything else to put into savings
Corenn 01-08-2008, 11:54 AM We have a jar above the washer and dryer so when DH emptys his pockets he puts the change in there...then when that fills it goes into a 5 allon jug upstairs..
SAMSET 01-08-2008, 12:11 PM NO...I'm so unorganized with my change its everywhere...all around the house in jacket pockets in my purses in my car...Im sure it would add up quickly if I would put it all in the same spot!
define 01-08-2008, 12:50 PM :yes :yes
Rileysmom 01-08-2008, 12:52 PM Wow thats cool about the BOA thing!
We save our change and let Riley put it into his piggy bank (good motor skill development :teehee) every couple days. When it's full, we cash it and put it into a savings bond for him. That little turd is already rich from that and the other bonds my family has given him!
mossey2000 01-08-2008, 12:54 PM yes, when we have cash. We usually use the debit though.
*Melissa* 01-08-2008, 01:14 PM Yes, we do... we have a big jar that all change goes into!
Proud_MPWIFE 01-08-2008, 08:35 PM I never use cash, so I never have any change laying around
It look me an hr to find .25 cent yesterday to go to Aldi's....lol
erickson007 01-08-2008, 09:27 PM yup we are saving our change for a trip to disneyland! donations accepted :teehee and we are also enrolled in that BOA keep the change thingy too. i agree with you that boy it adds up quick!
Tara S. 01-08-2008, 10:35 PM i save all mine...i use it for emergencies..last time i rolled it up, ihad almost $300...it paid a few bills when i needed it too
SIMMYBABEZ 01-08-2008, 10:40 PM Yes I always bring Milo with me when I'm going overseas- so after all thats gone, I'll use the can and we shove our coins, or odd bits of money around.
Usually we use our debit- and keep a 20 in our wallet for "just incase" and if that 20 gets broken- all the change goes in the can- even if it's 15 bucks.
Lefty80 01-08-2008, 10:45 PM I got an apple jar tht I have had for at least 10 years. Dh laughed at me when he saw it when we were dating. After awhile he thought it was a great idea. We use it for car wash money. The rest we jsut save. We would probably have more in it but we also put our change in dd's piggy bank. It comes in handy that's for sure!
Amanda 01-16-2008, 12:44 PM yep we do it daily with ALL of our change. When our jar is full we'll empty and fill again usually after it's full twice we go get it exchanged for cash
HeatherNichole 01-16-2008, 12:46 PM is bank of america still offering that??? I thought that was just a credit card...but heck if its the debit card then I am totally switching banks!!! What a great deal!
mitziebella 01-16-2008, 03:39 PM all our loose change goes into our daughters piggy bank. they have a couple they dump the change into.
sweetpea20 01-22-2008, 02:38 PM yep. We have several small baskets, dishes around the house that collect change. Whenever we move we take it all in and deposit it except for a bag full of quarters which come in handy doing laundry from one duty station to the next ;) I have one small basket that collects change and the kids and I will use that occassionally for a soda from the mini-mart or something like that.
Lckychrmzz 01-22-2008, 02:45 PM We have a change jar that counts the coins and so far there is $53 in it and I wont cash it in till its full.
MrsSTG 01-22-2008, 10:16 PM One jar for pennies and one for silver :D
gunsgirl 01-23-2008, 06:28 AM I have been saving change since 98-- BUT here is a better way and a faster way---
instead of just dropping every day change-- start using whole dollars-
when buying a pop- and it costs 1.29 use 2 dollars- then when you get home drop that money into a jar.
I currently save 30-50 dollars a month just by using whole dollars. and I am on an allownace of 100 a month.
for those that have banks that don't do change- go to a coin star-- and instead of getting a recpeit for cash get a credit for the grocery store- this is without fee!!
then just use that for gorceryes and then transfer the same amount to your savings every time you coinstar!!!
DakotaCowgirl 01-23-2008, 08:49 AM I have one and whenever I go to the commissary, I write the check for 10 over. Give 2 to the baggers and put the 8 in the jar. That money is up for grabs. We normally don't have cash around but sometimes it is nice to pay the babysitter in cash.
*Samantha* 01-23-2008, 09:07 AM We have a jar on the dresser to dump our change into every day.
Yeah I started keeping our change in this cute little monkey bank a little while ago but money is litterally about to me pouring out of its head lol I am sure it will add up to a decent bit of money eventually...and I to do the "keep the change" with bank of american...pretty good thing I say
HeatherNichole 01-23-2008, 09:12 AM I try but I end up using it!! =D
silent_earth 01-23-2008, 11:54 AM Yes we do! we save our change for the entire year, then cash it in and use it for our anniversary dinner. We've been averaging about $100 a year.
Kelsey 01-23-2008, 12:04 PM We sure do! It adds up very quickly.
LoveMyHalos 01-23-2008, 05:46 PM DF does... I tend to spend mine. I often have exact change.
starlisa 01-23-2008, 09:13 PM Yep! It can add up really fast, too... But I don't really like using cash.
I know my sister saves her change for Christmas presents.
~April~ 01-24-2008, 12:01 AM yup, we have a jar on the fridge. We were saving before for christmas and in a little over a month we had almost 40$ saved up. Now, we are just saving...no particular reason for it.
flowerchild 01-24-2008, 02:12 AM I save change I find in the washer :) I keep a jar in the cupboards above the washer, so I don't forget. I also tell DH that, if he remembers, to empty his pockets out into the jar. :)
goldenageskye 01-24-2008, 02:48 AM yeah, when your in college, and espically when you live in the city
change is always useful. i used to never need it, now i need to get soda for chase my booze down...haha..and i need it for ice cream to get fatter, and i need it to get around on public transport.
Dswife 01-24-2008, 03:47 AM yep we do :) it's easier for us to collect it now that i don't work because i used to use it for snacks at work..lol
Dragonfly76 01-26-2008, 08:22 AM We have a 5 gallon water jug that we use as the family piggy bank.
jjcreekmore 01-26-2008, 10:08 AM We give ours to our kids and use it when they need EXTRA stuff like shoes, clothes, ect. or put it in their savings accts. We use our debit/credit cards mostly though so maybe out of a month we might save them 2.00. :(
~*~Katie~*~ 01-26-2008, 10:13 AM Yup I do both! I have the keep the change with Bank of America and I have save it in a cup :) :woot
