So Me & my 2yr old Son are going to DH's basic training graduation Feb 26th...
Am i crazy for taking a 2yr old to a graduation ALONE? Has anyone took a young child b4? How'd it go over? Im scared he's gonna be sooo bad...We have to Change flights and everything! Just me & him...:duh
Know any tips, tricks, things to bring to make the trip & grad. easier? :confuzzle
#2.
I called the Base hotel to Book my room last week b/c i heard they fill up FAST! well, they told me to call back on the 12th...of Feb! :wow
Should i do that or- look 4 somewhere else just to be sure...or- look at another place just in case when i call them back they are full?
#3.
Should i be dressed Casual or- Classy? I know im not Dressing up b/c ill be lugging DS around lol :P
#4.
Would it be better [since its just me & DS] to book a cab or shuttle to Base b4 we get there...Does anyone know if they have those? Or am i just gonna have to Hitch a cab when we arrive? :dunno
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
As you can see, Im kinda freakin out!
DH was scared to leave the trip up to me, B/c he doesn't want me stressing-
but Im gonna show him i can do it ;)
Loretta 01-08-2008, 01:28 PM Dress casual and comfortable, but not sloppy. Jeans, heels or flats, and a cute sweater would be perfect.
I would have a plan B as far as hotels go, but still call on the 12th(at midinght, if I were you...early as possible) if that's when they told you to and if you're set on staying there.
I brought my son, he had just turned two at the time. Lots of kids and babies there, no big deal. It's not a formal thing at all.

No you aren't crazy. I took our 2 year old daughter to his graduation. Was it stressful? Yes very much so! But end the end it was good. Don't worry a lot of other people will have kids....don't worry about that. but you aren't crazy. it's a good idea. it will mean a lot to you and your SO..

Yes, you should look somewhere else..I used a website called military-hotels.us/? i think..it was very helpful. I would get it now..since they do fill up and maybe a better deal sooner.
3. Should i be dressed Casual or- Classy? I know im not Dressing up b/c ill be lugging DS around..
Dress Nice Casual...I wore pants and a nice sweater...most people wore jeans and a few people dressed up...

I actually rented a car..I think with the cost of the cab and all of that you can rent a car for the same price and that way you don't have to worry about all of that with the baby...I say rent a car..you can get them for about 30 dollars a day (i got the cheapest) and it worked out great...
Have fun!!! I remember going and feeling the same way and asking a million and one questions!!!!!! Ask me anything else, I'll try to help.

The problem with renting a car is...in most states, you have to be 25 to do it.
Mak327 01-08-2008, 02:46 PM My biggest tip for traveling and airports with a 2 year old is to keep him busy as much as you can on the flight and maybe even a little bit of children's benadryl to get him to settle down and nap a little bit. With all the excitement, he is unlikely to want to nap by himself, that might help a little bit. Be sure you have something he can suck on or whatever for take off and landing to help with his ears. It seems like common sense stuff, but when you realize at the last minute that it is take off and you don't have anything, you'll be upset, so something. Even if he just sucks on his finger or something it would be better than nothing.
Where is he at training? That would have some affect on car/shuttle/etc.
As for hotel, I would say book something else as a backup and you can always call the base on the 12th and if you get it, cancel the other one early enough.
RunAwayLove 01-08-2008, 02:50 PM 21 but theres an extra fee for being under 25 to rent a car:) and its not that bad ive done it like 5 times in the last six months now:)

Tango'sGirl 01-08-2008, 03:22 PM Hey All!!! I'm Jen by the way (new!)
I would suggest booking at another motel just in case. My boyfriend is graduating in Feb from Ft. Sill, OK and he says there's a Motel 6 RIGHT outside the Fort... so i called today and got myself a room with a king size bed ;) OwOw!!!
Anyway, the lady said their cancellation policy was you just need to cancel before 6pm the day of your reservation (they're really lenient!) and you won't get charged. So ask your Man if there's a motel nearby. if you get in to the lodging on base, you can just cancel. If not, you've already got a room!
I was wondering about the shuttle/cab/rent-a-car situation too. Anyone know if they have shuttles for families from OK City airport to Ft Sill for graduations?

cceribit 01-09-2008, 08:28 AM Do not wait, you will not get rooms on post. It's just the way it works out. There's not many, and most parents book well in advance. Book alternate hotel rooms now, and have them or you will end up in Texas trying to get a room. Be careful where you decide on... there's some seriously not "nice" places.
There are no shuttles, you are pretty much on your own getting back and forth to post. The best option are cabs... however it can be a nightmare at the checkpoints at the gate. Make sure you have a drivers license, and you follow visitor procedure. Or they will deny you access.
I recommend warmer clothes... in February it's cold and very windy here.
As far as the child, there's always a bunch so don't worry. But make sure you have a stroller b/c you don't want to be wrestling around trying to maintain him during the ceremony. At least with a stroller he can be seated and entertained with something to keep him quiet.
Tango'sGirl 01-09-2008, 11:27 AM Mine's graduating Feb 7 and I'm SoOoOo excited to go!!!!!!!! I just booked my motel room yesterday and need to book my flight today!!! :D Are you flying into the Oklahoma City airport? My boyfriend (Nick) says it's like an hour away... so I guess I'm renting a car.. luckily i'm old enough. In Cali you can rent a car if you're under 25 but it's more expensive cuz you have to buy extra insurance. I don't know what the laws are in OK.
