View Full Version : Brand new and need advice Please
2Princesses 01-09-2008, 09:25 PM Ok so my 2 and 3 yr old were in daycare and were learning so much. Now DH is home ( No More Sea Pay :( ). So I think I am going to take them out of daycare, but they were learning so much I don't want them to stop. We are in Wa and there is no Pre-k Programs here. So I was thinking of homeschooling. I am having a hard time figuring out how to go about it. Any advice?? Sites for toddlers?? Stuff that every newbie knows kind of thing.
Thanks

I HIGHLY doubt she was looking for THAT type of answer.......:wink
SailorsWife 01-10-2008, 12:18 AM Well you could look at like wal mart and stuff for learning books like abc and teaching them to count and colors and stuff like that to get them ready for kindergarden.. really if you teach them all the basics just by sitting down with them a few hours a day they will learn all the same stuff.. the only thing they are missing out on is the social part of it.. I taught my step daughter becca hose to write her name and all sorts of stuff before she went to school just by sitting her down an hour or so a day
Victoria 01-10-2008, 12:19 AM I would first contact a homeschooling group in your area. :)

:yes They'd most likely be able to point you in the right direction but I'm sure some of the ladies on here have some other advice/tips.

Where can I find a group??? A lot of the people I know thier kids are older. Like 10 and up.
Thanks again.
MelissaMc424 01-10-2008, 11:22 AM I bought DD a couple of the preschool workbooks from walmart, and she's doing great with them.. (She's almost 3 1/2..) We make learning the alphabet into a treasure hunt.. There are no free pre-k programs out here, (that I've found anyway.) so I'm working on having her ready for kindergarten all on my own.
Google homeschooling and your area. That might point you in the right direction.

Google homeschooling and your area together. Barnes & Nobles sells curriculum's for various ages & grades. You can also find online Waldorf or Montessori curriculum's depending on what you are looking for.
I like these site's:
http://www.waldorfwithoutwalls.com/
http://www.waldorfworld.net/Waldorf/Homeschooling/
This might help you out some:
http://www.wahomeschool.com/support.html
you will need to pick a curriculum so that you can narrow down your internet resource options.

What is the difference in curriculums?? Sorry I know I should probably get homeschooling for Dummies.
Green~Mammy 01-10-2008, 12:29 PM Well there are Christian based ones and then out of the Christian ones there are different branches like Catholic, Baptist etc.
There are also Jewish curriculum's, Muslim, and every other religion under the sun.
Then there are alternative learning styles like Waldorf, Montessori, & Unschooling, etc.
Then there are some that combine like a Christian based Montessori or a Wiccan based Waldorf.

So are there actual differences other then religion?? Sorry I don't think I am getting it.
Green~Mammy 01-10-2008, 12:56 PM yes there are MANY different curriculum's not having anything to do with religion.

So brake it down to me like a two year old :teehee What are curriculum's?? and how do people do like half christian and half of another??? Right now I am just trying to remember the stuff I did in the Daycare. :duh Which was...a while ago and I worked with four year olds.
JadedPrincess 01-10-2008, 02:17 PM If you have a local taps store you might want to look there.
:hug You'll figure it out. (They might actually have a Homeschooling for Dummies btw.)

Ethan's prospective preschool uses the Abeka curriculum
Green~Mammy 01-10-2008, 05:08 PM Well its not half its like they mesh them together. I am not Christian so I don't know anything about their curriculum's. I have experience with Waldorf though.
Curriculum's are just where you get your courses from, areas of study, lesson plan ideas, test pages, work sheets/pages, activity ideas, etc.
You don't NEED one though at the preschool level. You could just get workbooks and work on teaching the basics, colours, matching, ABC's, 123's, how to write their name things like that.
