View Full Version : What housing area do you live at in San Diego?
Ariel 01-10-2008, 08:34 PM I know this hasn't been asked in a while..
just wondering!
Also.. please add any pro's and con's about the area...
and if you'd recommend another housing area.
Also... how long did it take you to get housing.
Thanks!!! :D
We've lived in Lofgren Terrace and Serra Mesa. I love both area. Neither one we waited for long at all. Lofgren is a bit worse of a drive to bases because it is south of the bases so when you are trying to get home there is a lot of traffic. However the area was nice. Serra Mesa is great. It is close to lots of different freeways and takes DH only about 15 minutes to get to work. Getting home isn't bad ever either, about 20 minutes tops.
Victoria 01-10-2008, 08:37 PM Ariel...what base will Ryan be at?
MelissaMc424 01-10-2008, 08:39 PM Lofgren Terrace.. I love the neighborhood, and Eastlake is AWESOME. Very upscale, very clean.... The only con is that if we were to take the bigger house we qualify for, we'd have to move.. DH's advancement qualled us for Sr. housing. The major reason we're not moving is because we don't want to give up living in Eastlake, but can't afford to rent.
Lofgren was immediately available when we got here in April of last year. We're in a 2 bedroom, and while it has no yard, there are TONS of playgrounds for the kids to play on. There are 2 within 500 feet of my house.
I've seen Brandi's house on the Orleck side of Murphy Canyon, and it was very nice too.. there's a bit more of a wait since everyone wants to live in MC.

DH never hits traffic from 32nd... he doesn't go 805 at all.. He takes 54 to Bonita rd. and comes home that way..it takes about 15 mins.

:yes That's the way to go!!! Also the new freeway(125) will help to ease A LOT of the traffic, if it hasn't already.

Robert hit traffic living there coming from Coronado and going that way. It wasn't horrible traffic but it was indeed some traffic. We loved that area though, it was very pretty.

:yes It's open, and looks to be helping.. we took it home from Grossmont center the other day.. The Southbound part is a tollway.
MelissaMc424 01-10-2008, 08:50 PM point loma
I woudn't bother with Lofgren.. I'd try to get in at NTC or Serra Mesa..

We aren't living in military housing, but we do rent in Eastlake. And Melissa is right, this is a beautiful, clean, nice area. Thankfully BAH just went up so we aren't paying out of pocket anymore!

I saw the NTC housing area.. and its nice! But the only thing is that it has a 7-10 month wait lol!
I just looked on the site and it says that serra mesa only has a 2-5month wait.. how is that area?

JoyS lives there.. she posted about it... I've heard nothing but good things about it. It's supposed to be comparable to NTC.
We originally wanted NTC when we moved here but that would have meant another month in the lodge, and our move money was jacked up.. so we couldn't afford the wait. I love living over here though, so it worked out for the best.
Victoria 01-10-2008, 08:54 PM Since you'll be in Point Loma, I'd get on the waiting list for NTC and find a place that will allow a month to month lease in the mean time.
Ariel 01-10-2008, 08:56 PM anyone know how far serra is to point loma?
Victoria-- i'm planning on staying w/Ryan's family in Phoenix if we have to wait a few months. Ryan's gonna stay w/his sister in San Diego. I just don't wanna move our things twice kwim? LOL!
But i don't wanna wait too long for housing.. cuz i might go crazy at the inlaws haha!

NTC is actually in Pt. Loma.. so it wouldn't be far at all for him to go to work. My DH is stationed at 32nd, and just about every housing is the same distance from there.. it's like the geographic center..LOL

lmao! So okay.. maybe serra would be a possibility?!

Yeah, and it sucks that you can only be on one list at a time... been there..

yep it really sucks!! And it sucks that we can't be put on the waiting list when we got our orders :( We have to wait till we get to San Diego.
Victoria 01-10-2008, 09:02 PM lmao! So okay.. maybe serra would be a possibility?!
Serra is further away. I'd think 30 mins at most, w/o traffic. I believe Rachael would know :)

You'll be backdated to when you leave your last command. DH was TAD for 2 months, so they backdated us from April to Jan.. still didn't help for NTC though.. :mumble

Ariel 01-10-2008, 09:07 PM what about mira mesa ridge housing???
how far is it to point loma? How is it?

Mira Mesa would be a pretty hefty commute! :( A good 20 miles.
Kaymara 01-10-2008, 09:09 PM Miramar. I love it here. Its on base, everything is walking distance. When hubby is here and goes to work it takes him 15min to get to 32nd street because he is going against traffic. I can walk to the dr, bank, post office, gym, theater, pool, commisarry, starbucks, etc. I wouldnt live anywhere else truthfully. This place is perfect for us. There was no wqait. We got our house same day

We are over in the Sunbow area, by the Shapr Health Care. Right down the road from Otay Ranch Town Center...its on a big hill! There are palm trees on both sides of the drive up and down the hill! It is so pretty! We are on the same road as an elementary school!

Oh ok, I know where you're at! JKirstiH lives over here in Eastlake too.. off East Palomar in Otay Ranch..
define 01-10-2008, 09:28 PM I can't believe you're leaving, Ariel. :( At least when I go visit my parents in SD, we could meet up.
I like Serra Mesa from what I've seen. Very nice.

We can take the kids out when you go up to SD!! :D
piggypunkinetta 01-10-2008, 09:59 PM We live at NTC. I think you asked once about the preschools. I am not not sure if you were aware that the state no longer counts BAH when calculating the income limits. Because of that they have opened another classroom at the preschool onsite here at NTC.
Jen113007 01-10-2008, 11:32 PM Oh ok, I know where you're at! JKirstiH lives over here in Eastlake too.. off East Palomar in Otay Ranch..
We are on East Palomar!

Cool you're not far from me at all.. Maybe we should plan an Otay Ranch mall lunch g2g... there's tons of places to eat there..
JoyS lives there.. she posted about it... I've heard nothing but good things about it. It's supposed to be comparable to NTC.

We live in Serra Mesa and LOVE it. There are a ton of parks and it very nice and clean. Security is good in the area and it has a ton of freeways close. Not to mention there is a mall literally down the hill (Mission Valley) and they have a ton of community/family events. The people in housing are fairly friendly and the houses are pretty much identical to NTC, just in a different location :)
CAmom4721 01-11-2008, 12:03 AM We were on the Serra Mesa waiting list until we went to see it and we didn't really like the layout of it and now we're waiting on Chesterton. Just a heads up, we were on the Serra Mesa list for 4 months and when we got here it was gonna be another 3 weeks before they could get us in, so just be aware that the 2-5 months is more likely 5 than 2. Same thing with this Chesterton list we're on now, it said 5-9 and we're thinking it is definitely going to be more like 9. We haven't moved at all in three months. Good luck, I hope you end up some place that you love!
Murphy Canyon here.
We are pretty happy with our place. It was dirty as hell when we moved in, so I am NOT happy with that. But the area is great.
USNWife2004 01-11-2008, 06:13 AM Hey Eastlake Girlies!!! We moved and I know live of off East Palomar too!! We just moved into the Teresina Apts about a month ago!! DH just left for training so I am all alone over here so we should for sure do a Otay Ranch Town Center Lunch!!!! I would so come!!! :yes I go there like every day to take our puppy to the dog park!! I love living out here in Eastlake now!!!
Donna 01-11-2008, 06:44 AM We are in Murphy Canyon. It took us 6 months to get in, but that was in 2003 when they were still in the middle of the renovations.
Theresa 01-11-2008, 07:13 AM We lived in Bayview Hills. I loved that housing. :wub

DD loves the fountain at the food court.. This past summer I took her up there in her swimsuit and let her play.. she had a blast. Our cross streets are Otay Lakes and Telegraph Cyn.
We love Eastlake..
aubrey 01-11-2008, 03:13 PM We live at NTC, and I love it. Nothing bad to say about it.
Brandi 01-11-2008, 03:32 PM We live in the Orleck side of Murphy Canyon. I like it okay, but I don't have much to compare it to since we're new to the area and I haven't really seen other housing.
I HATE that our four bedroom is one level. It's a very small house, though I do like how enormous my kitchen and yard are. My yard kicks butt! We are not far from anything, so the commute is always super easy. We're only a few minutes from miramar, a few minutes from 32nd, a few minutes from pt loma, beaches, el cajon, etc... nothing is very much of a drive and we have a walmart and some nice grocery stores around here also.
ETA it took us a month to get in to our house.
exsNohs 01-13-2008, 06:29 PM we live in cholloas heights and i absolutely love it. the housing is one of the best ive seen in military housings and we looked at a lot. its a really quiet neighborhood and the house has a lot of room. :) theres a TON of stores literlly right across the sreet. wal mart, target, sams club, every fast food joint you can think of, big lots, mervyns, albertsons and so much more. its pretty convienant. :)
we lived at lofgren terrace like a year ago. it was nice. the houses arent as nice as were we are now for sure, but it was in a really pretty nieghborhood. i loved the lok of that area so much.

thanks for replying!! Do you happen to know how far Cholloas heights is from Point loma??
RonniesWifeJen 01-14-2008, 09:49 PM I don't live in housing. We'd lose too much money so we just stay out in town. I'm in North West Chula Vista and I have to say, I don't love it here. When DH gets home from deployment we will be finding a new place.
WordensWife819 01-14-2008, 10:04 PM Ok.... sorry to just now jump in this, but I was wondering what site you guys are getting this info from? DH and I are really hoping to get orders out to San Diego and I was trying to get some info on the areas out there but I can't seem to find any! If it helps, DH is a E-4 but should be an E-5 by the time that we get new orders in July. Thanks for any help ladies!
MelissaMc424 01-14-2008, 10:45 PM What info? We're simply stating what communities we live in..

its only about 20 minutes away. not too far id say. :]
MelissaMc424 01-14-2008, 10:54 PM If we end up staying here for sea, we'll be looking at Admiral Hartman or Chesterton..I'm wanting a single family home if we're stuck here for 5 yrs.
cyndilou 01-15-2008, 12:38 AM We just moved into Chesterton last week. I like the house and the area seems to be nice too.
